NHL Gear Whores

Recommended Posts

The thread in the equipment forum about gear whores got me thinking - who's known as a gear whore in the NHL? Anyone who's always changing their equipment, trying out new stuff, etc.?

Tim Thomas for starters

The Rick (DiPietro) would fall under the GGW (goalie gear whore) category as well.

I know when Lang was with the Wings he was in the AK, Dolomite, Busch Lightning, Synergy, Sickick, 9k, and probably more.

I've heard from a very good source who says he is the WORST when it comes to gloves; always trying other guy's gloves...
Savard

Seen him wear three different skates in a week.

LOL; Peter wins! Game, set and MATCH!
Back in the day, all-time # 1 gear whore is Mark Messier. Let the stories begin.

Haha, what's the infamous story about his pants being 1/16th of an inch too long or something and him noticing?

Thomas and "The Rick" are the biggest gear whores for NHL goalies. Mike Smith isn't far behind, he orders 3 sets at a time and changes between periods. Turko, how many other goalies have 3 masks rotating with their team jerseys? AND it really does take a gear whore to make fun of Luongo's "flaps."

Does Ryan Smyth count? "I want to look like Gretzky, make it happen." Doug Weight seems to be a minor gear whore(first with warrior gloves, colored holders). Brad Richards changes skate brands/models about 6 times a season and sticks about the same(rotating Eastons), if that counts. I'm curious about Kovalev, does he actually request the unique gear?

Lecavalier on the other hand goes through maybe 4 pairs of gloves a season.

I would discount your second paragraph and attribute that to style. I think the true definition is someone who flops back and forth. Hull did that.

As far as Mess -

Gazillion revisions to his pattern that only he can spot out

New skates every 10 days or so

Blade alignment on skates

In-between period sharpenings

i think garth snow was more concerned about "what he could get away with" i think he was one of the reasons they started talking about having size restricitons on goalies equipment..

i remember the announcers talking about how huge the shoulder pads on his chest protector were.

I'll buy that. Although some may argue that style is a form of gear whoredom. So they might still be worth mentioning. :)

The two Kostitsyn brothers are true gear whores...but mostly Sergei. He plays with a different brand stick almost every game. He's played around 6-7 games with the Vapor xxxx this year and i think that's his longest streak.

I don't see Kovalev being a gear whore at all...he's used the same gear for the past 2 years I think...only changing his stick this year to a newer model of the AK27 (looks like it anyway).

I don't see players staying with the same company for too long anymore... too many great products out there to choose from!

Do NHL players know all the model numbers of the new gear and things like that? Like would an NHL'er say "I can't wait to try the One95 stick" or "I'm going to try the X60 skates" or do they just find out about them when the reps bring them? Do they read up on what's coming out and get excited like we do?

No to all.

So they are completely oblivious to what new gear is coming out? They just kinda try it out when they have it shown to them by the rep?

My little guy is in skating lessons with Adrian Aucoins kid, they have had 8 skates so far, Adrian has skated 5X and he has had a 4 different pairs of custom mia/warrior or eagles. He also comes with 95/u+ sticks, despite being one of the remaining wood guys left.

last i heard he was in talks with rbk - i don't know if any agreement was ever reached.

i'm sure he is a little bit of a gear whore - but i doubt he is eccentric about it like a messier or a crosby
