Chris Osgood helmet

Recommended Posts

I have a question for you goalies or anyone in the know..As for Osgood's Winnwell/Cooper/NBH helmet..Is this just old stock? Reconditioned helmet? How old is the shell he's using? Can anyone shed some light on this?

As far as I know, it's a Cooper SK 2000 L helmet with NikeBauer stickers on it, and this particular helmet was acquired when Osgood went over to Russia for the Igor Larionov farewell game--it's pretty rare to find a "new" SK 2000 in red these days. I would imagine that it's late 80's vintage.

I've heard rumours that Osgood had Kevlar reinforcements put in, and I do know that Warwick made him a one-piece SK 2000 clone, but Osgood's stuck with the original article.

Between his helmet/cage combo and the fact that his leg pads are well into their fourth season strapped to his legs (Osgood learned the hard way that not swapping out your gloves these days can equal broken fingers/palms), and he's got a little Arturs Irbe bent going on...

It's a medium, not a large, and he found several more when he moved to St Louis. I've seen him rotate 3 through last season.

As to how he keeps the foam in good condition I have no clue. I suppose that he's got custom mods or a company like Warwick to refurbish the innards, but who knows. If he is using originals in every aspect I'd start to be worried.

His leg pads get a full teardown and rebuild every season, too. He was supposed to ditch them before last season, saying in an interview they were on their last legs, so it's most likely not the same pad, everything having been replaced/refurbished at one point or another.

at one point peranis had all the sk2000 stock left. htey were getting orders from nhl teams that had players wearing them.

i've heard rumors that ozzie has a mask but refuses to wear it. back in '97 mike veron was trying to get him ot wear one saying it was safer than his helmet/mask combo. beside his mask is getting to be in short supply as well.

Ken Daniels said on a recent FSD Wings broadcast that Ozzie's current SK2000 was acquired by Wings equipment manager Paul Boyer via trade when Boyer was in Moscow attending a Igor Larionov charity game.

Its a Small/Medium, and I also heard the ones he is wearing now were recovered from Russia. The side bumpers (we call them wings) are made by Shawn at Custom Made Masks, they are much stronger than the crappy plastic ones that come stock. If you look closely, you can see the difference in color.

The Hockey News magazine that's out right now is all about goalie masks and it has a really good multi-page article about Hasek and Osgood's helmet/cage combos, how they got them and why they never switched to the new style mask.

Bishop Designs

i think this was Cooper style warwick helmet that was made for Osgood but he opted to stick with the good Coop.

I've seen some better pictures but couldn't find them sorry, if i find them i'll post them.

Personally I think he's nuts, i remember kids back in Peewee hockey cracking old Itech and Badger goalie helmets. If a 7th or 8th grader can crack the those can you imagine what a pro's shot would do if it caught ozzie in the side of the head or forehead. I know the arguement is that they are pros and they don't aim for the goalie's head but then again sometimes shit happens and I wouldn't want to be caught in that helmet when it does.

A little off topic, but the side bumpers were brought up. Were the things Can Neely and the like wore back in the 1990s additional protection (as seen below) like on the old Cooper lids? Ive known exactly what their purpose was, and its been bugging me for awhile, because they aren't exactly esthetically pleasing.

They provided better protection as it would disperse direct impact on the side/temple.

Chris Osgood Game / Practice Worn Mask - Detroit Red Wings 2005-2006

This mask was worn during the 2005-2006 Season with the Detroit Red Wings. I was told by a training member that this mask was only worn for a couple of practices and an intersquad game. I have spoken to both the mask builder and the painter. One claims that Osgood did not wear this mask in games because of the fit of the mask. The other says that Osgood did not wear this mask in games because the paint job was too much for him.

more info in the link.

I thought that Osgood got two rebuilds last year. He had two sets of thigh rise foam added, with the second set a little taller and stiffer.
