Does anyone else buy for hockey gear when they don't even need it?

Recommended Posts

I think I have a problem. I look at my friends and they are wearing hockey gear that is 15+ years old. Me on the other hand is always buying new stuff. I like doing the research then going to the local shop to do more research etc. I like shopping for hockey gear.

I'm not always upgrading either sometimes I'm downgrading. Like my 8K RBK shoulder pads downgraded to a $30 pair for my bear league. The end result? I like the $30 pads better.

I easily kill a few hours a week doing stuff like this. Am I the only one.

PS: My friends love me for my hand-me-down-equipment.

I've started getting this problem really bad lately too. I'm constantly buying and looking for new stuff, and I don't even need it. My gear is at the oldest 8 months old, but I can't help buying new stuff, especially if it's on sale. Out comes the credit card....

The worst part is I'm going to Vancouver next week and there's some big hockey shops up there. It'll be really hard to not spend lots and lots of money there...

I'm from Victoria BC but have family in Ontario that I visit every summer. My wife asked me what we should do there the next time we go since we did the CN Tower/ Niagara Falls thing last time. I said with out pausing "We should go to London Ontario because they make Eagle gloves there." True story.

I'm in the same boat, there are guys i play with that are rocking gloves that are going to fall off their hands in threads.. socks with more holes than swiss cheese.. helmets so old i didn't even know they made them back then... I probably have 4 sets of gloves newer than the ones they wear.. i look at equipment all day at work... Dale im not talking about the express..

This is a major problem for me. I blow so much money on gear I don't need, but just simply want. It doesn't help working at a shop where I can see everything up close, it just makes me want it more. I've been told to get help.

I've read here it's called GAS: Gear Acquisition Syndrome. I think there's actually a couple of recovery threads on this disease, at least for glove and stick whores. :P

I'm currently suffering from OPS GAS. I rationalize it by telling myself I am gong to sell all the "older" sticks I have accumulated once I find that perfect one. So far, I've sold one stick, one shaft, and some blades....and have a long way to go before even coming close to offsetting the costs of my latest compulsive purchases!

That was popularized by the guitar crowd a long time before we were around.

Went from one set of gloves to 9, trying to get back down to 2 now...

I stopped trying to tell myself I was going to sell sticks a long time ago. Not just OPS, but shafts and blades, too. I have 7 sticks at my apartment, 2 more on the way and 10 more at my house at college, with maybe 10 spare blades that have yet to find a home. I'm also constantly swapping the blades around as my preference for flex, grip, lie and curve jump around.

Yes, you definitely need help! U+, U+, U+ Hey, was that a scratch I saw on your stick? Better buff that out. <_<

Haha, you are so right. I know a guy who has a pair of those Gordie Howe Cooper 9 rolls, palms way gone decades ago.. They are so long, he doesn't even need elbow pads.

I had four pairs of gloves, two of which I used. As of today, I got my Eagles, which I didn't need, but I wanted. I also have at least an extra set of all my other gear. It's an addiction and I love it.

38 pair of gloves (2 more on the way)

160+ sticks.

6 helmets

3 pair of pants

2 pair of elbow pads

4 pair of shin guards

I'm just curious, but what do you do with all those sticks? Are you just at the collection stage now or what? I'd like to see pictures of all the stuff you have, that's crazy. The local shop doesn't even have that many sticks and gloves.

My only issue is gloves and sticks, everything else I could careless about.

Ive bought so many gloves these past couple of months and I dont even know why. I also tend to buy sticks, only because I like to try new stuff out every once in a while even if I dont need it.

When given the opportunity, I'll take a few sticks or new gloves or helmet to try-out (not so much skates right now - I'm on what will likely be my last pair of Vapor 10s and don't want to think about what I'm going to do once I have to get rid of them)...but I usually always end-up going back to what I was using beforehand. I'm pretty picky about my shins, pants, elbows and shoulders, though - so once I find something I like where they're concerned, that's all I'll wear.

I have the Easton 4 rolls, and really like them. But I had a pair of Eagle ppf for a few days knowing I was selling them, and loved how they felt. I would love a new pair of Eagles, but then my Eastons would just collect dust. Why wear a glove that you love...but like less? Thats why I cant ever become a gear whore, as I will only likely wear the one piece I like best while the rest sits unused. Why would I have 7 pair if I only wear the one I like the best? So I try to refrain. It is frustrating. I just like getting newer and better.
