Multi-dimensional Gear Whore?

Recommended Posts

i know what he meant. if i have no money to spend on gear, why would i buy it? hockey gear is too expensive to waste money on.

Waste? It's money well spent. :D

I'm gradually constructing a second set of goalie gear to use in a gongshow ball hockey league this summer. I don't know if it counts as whorish, per se, since the amounts of money involved are relatively small, but this will mark my fourth set of gear, and that seems rather promiscuous.

Now I just need to stop coveting Aldens in cigar and whiskey... and god help me if I ever find ravello!

Because re-gripping is so tough :)

I've yet to break into the realm of modding clubs with custom offsets/lies/lofts/grinds/lengths/bounces but I could easily see myself getting into it if I had the time.

Golf is a dangerous game for a gear whore. It can be way more money than hockey if you're not careful. Luckily I've been pretty good. The big one over the last year is $300 for a Scotty Cameron.

I'm a motocross gear whore big time. Always have to have the latest set of gear out no matter the color. Funny part is i haven't rode competitively in 4 years.

09's, I'm getting them today. The club pro at my golf course was selling his 08's and they feel amazing so I'm pumped at how the 09's will feel like.

golf, hockey, cycling, ski touring & running

i'm constantly rotating clubs, not because they dont work, but because it motivates/excites me enough to keep playing. the only thing that's stayed the same for the past 18 months is my scotty cameron studio putter. as for hockey,we all know how easy it is to be a GW. for cycling i'm always trying to go lighter or stronger or faster or all three and for ski touring, it's new boots, new skis, and then the apparel side (jackets, shells, layering options, pants, backpacks, poles, hydration systems).

in the (ogio atlas) bag: Cleveland Hi-Bore XL, Taylormade Burner 3,5 Cobra Pro Muscle Back irons Vokey Nickel wedge set Scotty Cameron Studio Newport 2

I've got three bikes: Santa Cruz Heckler, Orbea Orca in nude carbon with Campagnolo SR & a Cannondale Super Six Ultimate with SRAM Red that i bought for a kickass deal (only reason).

on snow my most recent pride and joy is the new G3 Onyx binding, for which i'm a beta tester, on a new pair of Zen Oxides (super light, super fat). i have two pro shells (artceryx & mhw argon), tons of icebreaker shit, garmont radium boots, some windstopper pieces, hardface power stretch, a mhw diritessima pack for backcountry and a new smaller pack for slackcountry that i cant remember the name of.

for footwear, i have four pairs of trail runners (montrail streak, nike pegasus ESC, salomon XT, brooks cascadia) and on the road i have pearl izumi synchro guide, three pairs of custom colored air pegasus, plus the 25 SE, asics gel kayano, and brooks glycerin 6.

i'm also an apple whore. i have five ipods: two nanos, a classic, a shuffle and the iphone, a macbook pro, a 20" imac, a 24" imac at work.

add me to the list of golf gear ho. over the last 8 years, i've been through roughly 16 drivers, 3 sets of irons, half a dozen wedges, 7 putters, 3 bags, 6 3-woods, 4 5-woods and don't even know how many hybrids. on top of that, there's all the clothes from hats to shirts to rain gear to shoes to pants/shorts to gloves. then you throw in some balls. and all of that is before you get to pay the greens fee, dayum!

right now i've settled on a cally ft-5 tour driver, nike sq2 3w, cleveland halo 2i hybrid, tm rescue 4 hybrid, titty ap2 irons, cally x-forged wedges (52 and 58) along with a tour bettinardi bb1 putter. already thinking of replacing the driver, 3w and hybrids. the irons, wedges and putter are all safe for now though.

Not judging anyone, but it's amazing how much people spend needlessly, and do so even as they recognize the needlessness.

It seems like most people see this as somewhat comical. I guess if you're still paying your bills and saving enough then no harm done. Sometimes it just seems like this kind of spending is what got us into the economic situation we're in with people being unable to keep their homes.

Just a thought...

Actually, that's only partly true. The reason we are in the economic struggle is because we aren't spending enough anymore. The reason we aren't spending enough is because we don't have as much money available as before.

Here's where your point comes in. We don't have the money we used to because we spent excess income on things we didn't necessarily need, but could afford. Once jobs started going down the drain, bailouts, pay-cuts we didn't have as much excess income coming in, and with our previous spending habits, not much in savings either.

the economic struggle came not from spending money, but spending "credit". those that lost their homes were not living within their means... wether that means taking zero down mortgages because they couldnt qualify for bank mortgages, or borrowing on their home to furnish it, or go on vacation, or buy sweet bauer 4 roll pro returns, it doesnt matter... the people that lost their homes did so because they failed to live within their means.

the truth of the matter is that conglomerate lending corporations and foolish citizens trying to "live the dream" got us into this situation. do you know how many millionaires became billionaires when the market crashed??? every single derivatives trader & hedge fund guy... because they were smart enough to see it coming a mile away, and bet on it.

the economy NEEDS money to change hands in order to be healthy, not credit. so spend away.... just make sure you can pay it off at the end of the month.

very well put and agreed. money needs to be spent, as long as it can be afforded to do so.

besides hockey, ive got a problem with lacrosse gear.

ive got 4 full sticks, 3 extra heads

2 pairs of cleats

3 pairs of gloves

2 helmets

2 sets of arm guards

2 shoulder pads- one for practice that are essentially shoulder pads with the protective parts cut off, and one for games

and a ridiculous amount of jerseys, pennies, and shorts
