Don Cherry blasts Ovechkin on HNIC

Recommended Posts

It was Sportscenter' s Highlight of the Day yesterday. That's the pinnacle of sports press, and on March Madness opener no less. Well done, Alex.

Was that the US version of Sportscenter? If so, count me as impressed.

It's still a dumb celebration though.

As far as Arod getting press, umm well baseball is already popular. Thats only gonna hurt HIM, not the sport . Hockey is not as fortunate

Steroids isn't hurting the sport of baseball? Bud Selig might want to have a word with you about that.

TSN's Sportscentre, or ESPN's Sportscentre? big difference.

people need to relax, the guy scores 50, let him celebrate, it was funny, cleaver and poked fun at no one, he just acted like the stick was hot...

Like Alfredson said, god only knows what he would do if he could get to 50...

I'm sure the homosexual community thought that's exactly what it was. Don't be a douche.

We just had this discussion over on IW

If you wanna look at this from the NHL's standpoint, if there is one player in the game they would do anything to keep around, its him, and by him i mean Ovie. I cant statistically justify that he has sold more jerseys since being in the league, or that he has Sold out more caps games (home and away for that matter), and gained the NHL more fans and viewer than any other player (I would argue more so than Gretzky), but it wouldnt be hard to imagine.

Is he the best all around player? Not by a long shot, but hes a kid at heart, and as someone commented earlier, plays with more fire than the whole western conference combined. Im not trying to ride the ovie wagon, thats plenty full, but lets be honest, HE IS THE BEST THING TO HAPPEN TO HOCKEY IN RECENT MEMORY (or at all I'd argue). If i was as valuable as him, id celebrate every goal like i just got a 13 year 10 million dollar contract too...o wait he did.

Not even close, there wouldn't be hockey in some parts on the US without 99, so nice try, the league isn't thinking expansion because of Ovie.

The more I have seen this celerbration the more I wish someone with backbone on Tampa would have knocked him out. This idea that the league needs this type of hype to generate fans for lack of a better word, is dumb. If you are defending this, then you must not have class either. Watch Iggy score his 50th last year, tap on the head to the guys, go to the bench, pure class. I used to love Ovie, now I hope he gets nailed each shift.

The league will continue to do well in hockey markets were fans can appreciate the talent on the ice, not the creativity of celebration, and if fringe fans in the US need some type of celebration hype, for teams to bring in fans and stay alive, then I hope the teams fail soon after and my dream of contraction will one day come true. (which I don't think they do),

Why are people so concerened with the NHL getting hype nationally, hockey will always be a regional market and in most markets they are and will always be strong. Who cares if the NHL is on Sportscentre because of some stupid celebration.

Don Cherry took credit for his toned down celebrations. Ovechkin was showing Cherry that he wasn't an influence on him.

That said, it was a dick move by ovechkin. I have defended his celebrations here because they have ALWAYS seemed spontaneous, and passionate.

This was pre-meditated, and stupid. Hopefully this was just to prove a point to cherry about his supposed influence over him, and it's back to business as usual tomorrow against the canes

+1 Completely agree!

hockey people are so sensitive...

Hey if nhlers dont like it, they can score 50 to show ovie how its done, in the mean time, let the guy celebrate his milestone...

I don't think gay is the way to describe it, but it was uncalled for. I've always liked watching ovechkin but this just pushed my buttons. In my opinion hockey is the only "real" sport left, and stunts like this aren't helping my argument with non hockey fans. Look at Gretzky, in my eyes the greatest player ever to hit the ice, In all his record breaking games he hardly did anything but put his arms up and wear a big smile across his face. He had respect for the game and knew that his accomplishments were enough to impress anybody a fan of the game. When ovechkin scores 50 goals in 38 games or 93 in a season, i'll accept his goofy stunts. Until then he needs to get his act together.

oh NHL on the fly, they said that Ovie has scored more goals than any other player since the Lockout, and has had 50 goal seasons the last 3 years. i think that is ground enough for him to celebrate the way he wants to. I agree that the whole pre meditated thing was taking it a bit too far, but its only for one goal, calm down guys, this isnt golf.

Back when The Departed came out there was a great article that included an explanation of the Boston area usage of terms like "gay" and "fag" and how they don't carry the homosexual connotation but have a more general meaning. I could as easily have said , "Nah, it was just plain stupid" but I have a feeling then you would have accused me of slandering the mentally challenged.

I'm sure everybody else just watched Coache's Corner to see what Cherry had to say about Ovechkin's last celebration, and I've gotta agree 100% with what he said. He actually made a lot of sense this time, handled it well, and made good points instead of just going off on a rant. I think Cherry was pretty spot-on with how a lot of people feel. Maybe Ovechkin will pay a little attention to what he said and not start acting like T.O. or Ocho Cinco.

Say what you will about Cherry and some of his opinions and biases, when he does his tributes to fallen Canadian soldiers (one from my home town this time) it puts all the hockey talk into perspective.

... So because your from Boston you can use the term 'gay' and 'fag' and it wont be hurtful to someone who actually is gay? Not gonna lie, that might have been the dumbest thing ive ever seen posted on these boards.

I find it hypocritical when Cherry harps on guys for being flashy, has he ever looked in the mirror. He doesn't dress that way because it's fashionable.

I wonder whether Cherry intentionally mispronounces the names of French-Canadian soldiers who died in Afghanistan, as so many of our soldiers seem to be from Quebec. Actually, I wonder whether Cherry chooses to honour them with mention at all.

I think it is scandalous that a bigoted blowhard is being paid so much money by taxpayers to air his drivel each week.

opinion aside, Boston isnt the only place in the country where the colloquial usage happens. its funny how he trys to claim it, and justify it

Your a real clown.

It's so hard to take anyone that doesn't know how to use an apostrophe seriously. Back to the first grade, kid.

If we are going to be grammar nazi's, he didn't omit an apostrophe, he used the wrong homophone.
