Cheap F'ing players in beer/rec leagues....

Recommended Posts

I don't know if it's related to the recession, but cheap play and lack of respect for other players / officials seems to be on the rise, both in beer leagues and in minor hockey. Or maybe that's the way society is going.

You gotta figure a lot of guys have a lot on their minds off the ice and if they're miserable in general, that's bound to translate to their game.

Yeah i can see that happening. Maybe its just me, but that's what I just love about playing. As soon as I get out on the ice I am not thinking about anything outside the rink. I got laid off in Nov. and with new house lets just say I have a ton on my mind, but hockey really allows me to just go out there and take my mind off things for a couple hours.

No doubt... I think we'd all rather be playing with you. :)

Looking at the spring/summer league at our local rink, just about every team in every division has a few lunatics on their roster. There isn't a single night where you aren't going to be facing someone that just might try and put you through the boards at any time. I've been getting more and more fed up with the beer league bullshit lately as well. As I hope to be relocating to a non-hockey market, it may become a moot point.

Hence the oft used phrase, "Looks like [insert number here]'s wife burned dinner tonight."

Ha! I'll have to use that one next time an older guy is out there imitating dale hunter circa 1998. U should update the "hockey phrases" thread with that one!

Damn....that's gonna be one nasty withdrawal once it kicks in... :(

Well, the shittiest thing of all is that 9 times out of 10, these incidents are caused by "kids" (i.e. under 21 or so) who have no concept of what real life is all about. The kids who have no responsibilities and who likely still live at home with their parents. The kids that don't realize that the guy they just checked into the boards from behind has a pregnant Wife at home and is his family's provider.

That's why 30+, and 35+ leagues are the happenin' thing on the South Shore of Massachusetts. Most of my horror stories in beer league play involve kids in the early 20's with a serious attitude problem. Maybe they're angst they can't make their college team, or even a club team and take it out on guys just looking to have fun.

That's why I'm completely content with a group of guys playing pickup.... The hours "motto" is basically "We all gotta go to work tomorrow"

Last week at a drop-in adult game a guy on our team got blind-sided into the boards. He got up and chuckled and gave the "wtf" look to the player who did it. It was over and done. Until the next shift the two were both out again. Same deal... guy nails the player from our team. Yes, this is a no-check deal with a wide mix of ages from some high school kids who just a couple weeks earlier won the state title, to older 45-50+ year old men, and even a couple of women. After the second hit our guy shouted to another player he knew on the guy's team and told him he needed to tell his teammate to cool it, as there wouldn't be a third time he'd put up with a hit like that. The rest of the game went fine. I was surprised as it's a very low-key group that loves to skate hard and not play chippy. It's possible the guy had not played there much before, who knows?

It seems like most of these incidents that are attributed to "young bucks" or "old farts" are not about the average age on the ice, but about a wide range of ages; old guy goes after a young guy, etc.

I'll support that theory Law. Last summer I played in an 18+ "College Elite League", pretty much a beer league for all the kids home for the summer, and there weren't any incidents. Part of it could be attributed to almost everyone having played with or against a number of guys on each team for years. We even drank until 2AM at the rink with the team that eliminated us from the playoffs earlier in the day.

The guys that I don't like are the ones who will run into you or hack at you, but if you so much as look at the guy wrong he'll scream for a penalty or deliberately try and trip or hook you. I don't care if someone wants to play physical, as long as it's clean and no one takes it too seriously. It generally starts to happen when somebody gets frustrated. I've been two handed in the foot for just taking the puck out of the zone when we're down 5-on-3. It's not my fault you can't get anything set-up, why do you have to be a dick about it? The refs are pretty strict so they keep everything to a low level of bullshit. Sometimes there are weak calls, but they do a good job of keeping it from getting out of hand.

I'm not a fan of "Enforcer Guy" who's skills are pretty much average in not below, but he's got like 4-5" and 30lbs on almost everyone else in the league and goes around player like he's Chris Pronger out there; even go near the goalie and hauls of and drops you just to let you know you better not go near the crease....its expected i guess, but still annoying.

I think guys in the 40+ age group tend to be the most mellow, of course the exception is if you get a douche in that bracket you know the guy is going to be the ultra douche of the century. Don't generally find the maturity issues limited to the 20 somethings either. Then again, I've also found that a lot of adult leaguers don't get the difference between "no contact" and "no check" hockey.

rofl just today when helping coach my kids roller hockey class the main coach asked me if I wanted to play in the over 35 league. I got a few years till 35 but had bitched about not wanting to play much anymore against game 7 guy. He said come on out. Think I will be taking him up on it. I just dont have the desire to play against 20 year olds that want to rage. I got to work to put food on the table.

I've found less bullshit since I switched to ice full time. Although I used to be the guy Fletch is talking about in roller I also used to get hammered on occasion. I took a 2 handed slash to the back of the neck in roller. Since I switched to ice I've found much more respect from the players, could be the league fees, could be just trying to play in better leagues. I've also gotten kicked in the pants by a guy on his back in ice which was pretty scary. In the situation Fletch was in I would've gotten up and kicked the crap out of the guy. There should be certain areas of your body that require the protection of your fists, mainly your head and groin areas. Anybody touches me there and it's go time. And if you hear or sense a guy barreling down on you you need to expect impact. Try to know when a guy wants a piece of you. Obviously, the guy is coming out of the box, is a hot head and you're in a dangerous area. If you expected that somebody would try to get you if you took an extra whack you would be facing the player ready to protect yourself rather than get cross checked in the back.

Most of the people here are Flyer fans and way too many still try and emulate the broad street bullies in every game. The kids usually just sandbag around here and the older guys are the ones that will try and cripple you for taking the puck away or making a nice pass.

You don't play like a prick anymore? I'll believe that when I see it.

We've got a classic cheapo guy in our intramurals. Every time we play him he plays like a bitch and does nothing but dive, try to go coast-to-coast, talk shit, and do dirty stuff when he thinks the ref isn't looking. He's damn good when he focuses on playing but for some reason he's more interested in starting shit (he's a little guy too so I'm not sure why chose this playing style.

His team is average so we tend to focus on him since he's the only that can really hurt us at any moment. We don't play dirty but it frustrates the hell out of him when we stalk him all over the ice.

Played him tonight, he dove like crazy less than 15 seconds into the game. He drew another penalty by goading one of our guys into pushing him. After that we all made it a point to not fight back. He got a minor and a double minor within the next eight minutes and got tossed out of the game.

Including tonight, he's been tossed the last three times we played him.

I love playing against guys like that. The more you shadow him and exchange words the madder they get. They are so easy to throw off thier game. Give me a mouthy hot head anytime. Plus they are like a cancer on thier bench. The more angrier he gets the more complaining they do on the bench.

Sounds like a player that got me suspended last year.. I lost it and dropped the gloves, tried to get him to fight he woudlnt so i just started beating on him then the refs came in and i was pretty upset at that time and i had him down and to make a long story short, those players are the worst. Nothing worse then playing a game when sean avery himself decides its a good time to trash talk and play dirty.

It's bullshit....I have no idea what can be done to stop it that's "within the rules" and the rink I play at doesn't seem to give a rat's ass about the safety of it's players as long as they keep paying them to play there.

I’ve actually had many situations where the exact opposite happens to me. I’m young (almost 23) and play club hockey for my college and sometimes play in some “old man” league games from time to time. When I do play with the older fellas I usually play defense and tone it down a bit because I do understand many of them get fed up with ringers. In my journeys I’ve found that a lot of older players tend to be less careless with their sticks and the way they use their body. I can recall two significant times where I’ve been clocked from behind in these games by much older players (once by Keith Thachuck’s cousin). That’s just what I notice as a younger player but I can understand where you’re coming from.

Can we just admit it's not a young or old thing and that some players are just dirtier then others?

Sure, just as soon as I have my say:

Just gonna throw out another voice here, at 24 I'm starting to get a little pissed off when old men drag me down or hack my stick calling me "little shit" because I got to the puck first. Sorry I'm not slow and overweight yet, quit fecking trying to take my knee out.

I've switched to a more protective beezer and shin pads than I wore though high school and college intermurals for non-contact adult leagues because of old men's attitudes.

Ok now we can agree that some people are cheap hacking assholes regardless of age. Old people need to suck it up and some kids need to realize old guys dont appreciate that extra lean on the shoulder in the slot.
