Miken sticks

Recommended Posts

The last aluminum bat I liked was a TPX. I still look at bats and gloves every now and then but I don't like the newer stuff like I loved my old Easton batting gloves and that TPX bat. I'd like to try a DeMarini pro maple but my baseball days are over. :(

So I guess this tells us how much we care about Miken hockey sticks. haha.

I broke down and got the Demarini maple last week after breaking 2 different kinds last week...At $140 a pop, I'm hoping it'll last the season.

I think what's more surprising is there is a hockey shop that actually bought these.

I tried this out at MN Expo... I'd rather shoot with an S3 than this thing. Horrible stick, especially for the pricing. 80-100 at most for it imo.

A major retail store at that.

I tried the Miken stick, I like the feel of the stick, okay balance and puck feel, no were near the ONE95 though. Great pop, actually incredible pop, felt as good as the ONE95 for that. Kick point was super low on it, quick wristers and snaps. Blade/hosel was softer than most, so had to get used to it for passing and shooting. Good feel on pass recieving, didn't like it for giving passes (lag). Didn't like the feel on a clapper. Played with the 75 flex and with an Iggy curve.

I like their bats, have a Psycho for USSSA and a 484 Camo for ASA.

Like others, I tried it at the hockey expo but I told the guy there the price would keep buyers away. Way too thin, that is for sure. Good company, Caledonia MN so it helps my state's economy. I wish they had a better priced stick.

The bats that got banned were the Ultra and the Ultra 2. There were 3 deaths that I know of, 2 pitchers and a 3rd baseman. They are so silly hot that there is a big market where people buy Ultras and Ultra 2's, repaint them with decals as legal bats and swing them in leagues. I know I have played against guys with painted sticks and they are pretty obvious.

A teammate of mine has one for home run derbys. I swung one pretty much out of the wrapper with flip flops on and hit some of the longest bombs of my life, 375+ which is not like me.

Sorry to get so off track on softball. I believe Miken, Worth and Rawlings were purchased by K2 a while back so there has got to be some technology sharing. Their price point will scare a lot of people off. They should have started with a price/performance competitive stick. This could turn out to be epic fail for them.

the original freak got banned too after killing a pitcher or something like that hence the freak 98

i think it'll make a good shaft, but the price is ridiculous

This is completely subjective as all stick reviews should be.

I've been using Miken sticks for 8,9 months and I really enjoy them. Not to say there first gen. wasn't a lemon. But, their current model...I really can't say enough good things about it. Balance and weight are comparable to other high-end sticks. (I've ran little unofficial tests at home for the sake of curiosity)Durability, in my opinion is BETTER than Easton and Bauer. It doesn't seem to get "exhausted" and "limp" after weeks/months of abuse - It still feels like day one. (blade and shaft). I did notice that I had a hard time dialing in my shot, so I went up in flex and it solved everything. Now I get what they mean about max. velocity -- There is a lot of boost and snap behind my shot. The asking price is a little risky for an unestablished company, but I look at it this way.

1.)I buying a composite stick for performance, not durability.

2.)If I can't afford a $230.00 for Miken I really should be thinking twice about paying $200.00 for an Easton/Bauer/Reebok/Warrior. But, I've been doing that for years now.

3.) It’s not that they aren't an 'established' Co., They just aren't established in hockey. (Their reputation in softball is overwhelmingly positive).

4.) Every company has to start somewhere. Miken builds performance bats that constantly need to be "tuned down" due to softball regulations. Well, there are no regulations regarding the performance of a hockey stick. Therefore, it probably was an easy and natural transition for them. Whatever their innovative technology is behind their bats can now be put into sticks...Without being handcuffed by leagues/associations. Hey, Easton did it years ago...Making the transition to hockey sticks and asking (at the time) what we all thought was a ridiculous amount for their sticks. Look where we are now...Just sayin.

5.) They are made it the U.S.A (Minnesota)

As I said earlier -- This is just one guys opinion.

Okay folks, I got the chance to handle one of Miken's sticks the other night. I've known Travis Fudge (previous Team USA inline player) for a while and he'd received one from them to try out. He let another buddy and I try it during a game and then on the rink after the game had ended. Fudge seemed to have fallen claim to Miken's talk that the stick was "the best thing on the market." He said numerous times that he'd been told that it was "unbreakable" and that it "retailed for just under $300." I informed him that just because the company had a prestige-price complex and charged an arm and a leg for an unproven product didn't mean that it was great at all. It merely means that the company came out with a new stick, hypes it up via marketing, and throws the biggest price tag ever on it in an attempt to make people feel like they're buying something that's better.

As for the feel, it was different than any other stick I'd felt before. The matte finish on the stick was very nice and resembled the Limited Edition X60 to the touch. But the puck feel was quite diminished and felt like a low to mid-level Easton stick: very cheap, weighted, and clumsy. The blade felt quite deadened. It wasn't like when someone prefers the ceramic/dead type of feel such as the X60.... this blade just felt lifeless and cheap. If you took an Easton ST blade, beat it to hell and back, and put it in a low-level shaft, you'd have the feel of the Miken stick. Weight is advertised at 465 grams, but this thing easily felt in the hands to be a 500+ gram stick right off the shelf. The Easton ST, which makes no excuses for increased weight, felt lighter on the rink. The weight of it resembled a mid-level stick. Felt of average width as far as the shaft profile, but the weight made it feel chunky. The balance wasn't great either.

The flex on it was supposed to be a 75, but this thing bowed like no other. Travis doesn't really care about breaking sticks since he gets them for free from various sources (typically uses and snaps X60s all the time), so when an obnoxious friend of his grabbed it and started trying to snap it on the bench by overflexing it, it was no big deal. I gave it some good flexing and this thing felt closer to some 60-65 flex juniors or intermediates I've felt in the past. Whippy beyond belief. I was hoping for some good kick out of it, but the kick was fairly mediocre as well. A buddy jumped out on a shift with it and as he went over the boards with it, claimed he "was going to break it." He found himself alone in our zone with the puck coming his way right along the boards and two opposing forwards racing for it. As he went to clear it, he intentionally took a slapshot/chop swing. As he did, the toe of his blade struck the boards first, torquing the blade backwards, before striking the floor about 18" behind the puck (this was his attempt to break it). The stick bowed incredibly and returned to form perfectly as he launched the puck out of the zone safely. If there's anything good I can say about that stick, it's that it didn't break while being flexed on two or more planes simultaneously.

In short, I wouldn't be impressed if this stick cost $120, much less it's $230+ price tag.

MSRP is not $350. I believe MAP is $230. We've sold a few (of the newer models), and those who got them like them. I think they'll have a niche in the market, kind of like Inno did. I think durability wise, they will be a great stick, because of the materials and construction technique. As for performance, that'll be up to the user as it's so much PP as it is anything else.

Has anyone tried the MV 5 yet?

I had the MV-3 and it broke. It had a crack develop in the shaft, that was under warranty. Going to get an MV-5 as a replacment. Still isnt here yet but should be in the next week. Curious to know what the radial constuction actually is, concave walls maybe?

I'll have to go on their website and read up on it again. I saw them a couple months ago at the trade show in Vegas. I thought it was a great stick. I don't need any sticks now, but I'll probably break down and get one. I'm also interested in the Combat 'Pure'.
