LkptTiger 1 Report post Posted May 22, 2009 My team is all mid 30s - all played good hockey growing up and all play top level beer league (lotta ex pro/college/Sr A, etc) now. In summer league we play nothing but 18-20 YOs trying to hot dog and show off for each other. They don't bug me becasue "they are better" (we've only lost one game). They bug me becuase they all think they're the next Ovechkin - when in reality maybe what 1 or 2 kids from the entire league will actually go somwhere serious in hockey (we've all been there). They hoot and hollar about every goal skate by their bench and do the train after a goal, etc, etc. The "washed up old mad" comments are kinda funny, we give out the old..."Ya, and still skating circles around you". I'm sure I was the same at that age, but it's really annoying. I've never heard so many "gong show hockey" quotes in my life. As for the old guys trying too hard, in my experience it's the complete opposite it's the kids who think there's scouts in the stands whatching the summer beer league. The guys who run their mouths and showboat are the ones who aren't going anywhere. Most anybody who's been anywhere (or is going somewhere) plays in summer beer leagues because they just want to get together with the boys, drink some beers...and have FUN playing hockey. Summer puck is a nice break from the mental/physical grind of the season.I would think most of the younger guys who are being obnoxious are just insecure with their skill level and want to believe that they're better than they really are. Why junior B or even lower level kids take summer hockey so serious is way beyond me. When I skate in the summer I want to come off the ice in a good mood because I just got some exercise and practice playing the game I love. Unfortunately, most times, I leave the ice frustrated with the idiots I just played against. I try not to get into conflict at all, but watching these losers trash talking and taking cheap shots at my friends (most of whom would kill any of these pukes if they decided it was worth their time) the whole game is brutal. By the end of most games I find myself playing apathetically and really just trying to protect my face from most of these reckless idiots’ sticks. It sucks, but hockey brings out the worst in a lot of people, and can really breed stupidity. That being said, a lot of the best people I know are hockey players. RecLeagueHero 0 Report post Posted May 22, 2009 In my personal experience, there seems to be a set of old guys that just don't like new people at these private games. A couple years ago after a rec league game someone came into the locker room and asked if anyone wanted to play in a private 3 on 3 game on the small ice because they were short a couple of guys. I still had my skates on and said sure if you need guys, offered to pay whatever the other guys normally do. One of the guys in the game, probably in his early 50's, just had a shit fit about me playing. I could have understood if I went out there and did the rec league hero bullshit, but I didn't even take 10 shots the whole game and only scored once. So I was definately playing down to the level. Still, every time I was in ear shot he had some asshole comment to make about my presence.
sectachrome 40 Report post Posted May 23, 2009 Whether you see them on the ice, on the road, or at the office, assholes are everywhere. Though hockey is a big dick measuring contest with a lot of guys. They wouldnt try and punch you in the face if you bumped into them at a grocery store, but they think its socially acceptable and cool on a hockey rink so they go nuts. They get off on it. These guys have issues.

Anyone know the make and model for those buckets ? Bossy wore it too.lol! I actually still have one of those in storage. I think Northland made it. I just called it my "Stan Mikita helmet". It's funny that it is considered such a ghastly relic of the 70's now. I guess it is the AMC Pacer of hockey helmets. But back in the day it was considered state of the art as it had web-supported protection, so your head was kind of supported by a web of lacing/padding and never actually touched the helmet-shell. I loved it. Hell...now I wanna yank it out of storage and pull a Tarantino on my teammates. Jeez...your nutcase 50 year old looks like George Parros and wears a Mikita-helmet. I'm actually starting to like this guy.

JJ Thompson94 0 Report post Posted May 23, 2009 There is one of these old guys EVERYWHERE. I'm playing summer with these guys that arn't great, so I tend to be the best player on the ice. Most of the guys are pretty cool so it's fun. There is this one guy, who is prob around 50 or so. I've gotten into a verbal spat with him over ice time. I gave into his child like behavior and let him get the longer ice time. I go "your acting like a child and your like 25 years older than me". He goes "Yeah so daddy says sit down and shut up".I wanted to pound this guy so bad.Last week he's on the other team and he has the puck and I sneek up behind him, lift his stick and take the puck and begin to skate the other way. Bam, this guy slashes me hard on the side of the leg. I make a cross ice pass and turn around and go " Two strikes man. You better watch yourself". He goes "fuck you" and skates off. All everybody says oh "yeah he's a dick, but what are you going to do, it's__name here___". Seriously, I really like all the guys, they arn't great but they are fun as hell to chill with. This one guy though. I really don't want to fight over stupid shit but this guy is a bully and no one ever stands up to him, but most of these guys have known him longer than me and I'm just there for the summer and he plays year round so I have no standing to have him kicked out. tonguesOUT4life 17 Report post Posted May 24, 2009 I have come up with a plan for next week .Not taking it seriously summer hockey is a good excersise when you can take advantage skating hard up and down the ice I'll just shadow him and make sure he doesn't get a chance with the puck fusterate him all day long and dangle around him if he decides to drop the mitts I'll drop mine and let him take some shots I'll simply try to get away from them and protect myself if I get caught with any haymakers I'll absorb them I won't hit him back becase I'm scared I'll hurt him so I'll use it as a practice also. I'll go for the take down ufc style. My pops was a boxer and I learned how to throw my knuckles around the same time I stepped in skates when I was 3. Wat ya say? Aussie Joe 0 Report post Posted May 24, 2009 I had a similar incident a few weeks back. I was out of town at a friend's pick up session. I know allot of guys from interstate hockey but some not. One of the older guys (45-55) of the mainly young group started hassling me at one point in the corner after I took the puck off him, boarded me and hacked my leg on another play. I looked up at the guy that runs the scrim who told him to calm down. Afterwards I asked a few guys If I was doing anything that would be considered outside the spirit of the session. They laughed said "No" and told me the guy used to play top tier and gets annoyed when ppl steal the puck off him now. I avoided the guy for most of the session and did apologise saying "If I did anything wrong I'm sorry". He smiled and said don't worry about it. Sometimes you do just have to swallow the ball swelling pride and pick up the piece pipe, rather then drop the gloves.

Play your normal game and don't target him any more than anyone else. If he still finds a reason to pick a fight with you let him have it. Some people just deserve to get popped a couple times. farhanshak 1 Report post Posted September 7, 2009 i commed you for not dropping the gloves.i have had this happen to me quite a few times...i am usually the nice guy at shinny that jokes around with everyone, makes sure everyone is having fun, i try to have fun myself, for some reason that opens up the door for other guys (usually new guys) to take cracks or cheap shots at me...? dont chirp, call names, or anything, especially no contact or cheap shots or any shots except to the net.because i know the guy that runs it, anyone that does this isnt invited back ever again...honestly, ask the guy that runs it to ask those people not to do it, and if they do it, dont show up becuase they are not invited going forward.i think i have only dropped the gloves once, and that is because the guy tried to take out my knee at center ice (twice) and i snapped the second time...this was in a mens beer league game. regretted it afterwards and the guy apologized...i talked to ref about it in between whistles as this guy was on a hurt mission the entire night but the ref didnt do anything...hope this helps :D

Grinder 2 Report post Posted September 8, 2009 Old man strength? Yeah, watch out for the old guys. At 42, that gives me twenty-two years of dirty tricks and experience on a 20 year old. And, with an ex-wife, I have an unlimited amount of rage that I can tap into at a moments notice.I've been tripped and cross checked to the floor from behind by a younger guy I play with twice in the last couple of months, and as much as it irks me, I've skated away. I have a family and a job, and I'm not taking any chances with that. If I was twenty something, it'd be different. Your perspective changes as you age.
