porky45 1 Report post Posted June 12, 2009 it's happened to me from time to time. sometimes you can get burnt out or have other interests that seem more important at the time. I remember when i was a kid i looked forward to nothing but hockey. I didn't care if it was practice or games or tournaments. Nothing else mattered. Then I turned 16 and had to get a job and start paying for everything...suddenly you realize that if you're not pro, there are more important things than hockey... shortly after the car comes the girlfriend and the serious relationships, parties, vacations... that's the way it happened for me. Wearing sandals to the hockey rink in the hot summer is the way to go.That being said, maybe this guy needs a change of scenery. Maybe move down a level and work on a few parts of your game, dominate a little and get some confidence back so it's more fun. Maybe getting out of the game entirely isn't the right answer. Aussie Joe 0 Report post Posted June 12, 2009 Whenever I get over hockey I either play Inline or Soccer.Soccer: because I remind myself how bad I am at the world game V's hockey. Inline: its a totally diff set of rules and playing style. It means I'm not doing the same thing with the same line mates and breaks up the monotony. Also catching up with my old hockey buds and remembering all the crazy stuff we have done, makes me want to get out and repeat the efforts. You need to focus on the good stuff when you are burnt, the great goals, hits, saves etc. Forget the screw ups and bad games. You'll get out of the hockey rut eventually matey. I still play drop in for the work out and keeping my skills up, but I think it's pretty normal to need to take a break. I definately think it's better to hit the links, swim, ride bikes, or whatever during the summer than to push yourself to the edge with burn out and then drop it altogether. I find that when i'm not playing much, I end up looking at gear, reading about the sport, etc. When I'm playing a lot I like to keep it compartmentalized. Just think about it at practice, during games and that's it.I don't know, it helps me. I actually find that I play better when I just come out and play and don't think about it 24/7. adam14 182 Report post Posted June 12, 2009 i only just realised how out of shape i am, haha. our season ended mid march, and until june as a team, we have nothing organised. once june comes, summer training begins, its basicalley dry land, once a week in a sport hall, and once a week on track, and oh how i regret not doing stuff in between. now moving back to canada in a few days, im gonna be working my ass off for august try outs. haha.my point is. dont quit. it will be the biggest mistake you make. Ive heard it thousands of times. take a break, sure. but go to pick up with your friends and let it gradually build over the summer until the fall when you will be ready for it. But living in Florida for the last 10 years has made me a pussy when it comes to the Winter cold. Definitely dont miss shoveling snow or getting into a frozen car in the morning. It is actually nice to have some time away from the rink and get some balance back in my life. At first its okay because you get to do other stuff you normally didnt have time for, but at the end of the day you really miss playing and would give anything to get back. I remember after my senior year of high school hockey was over I took some time off, I was just burnt out mentally and physically from hockey. After my tennis season was all done with (which was about two months) I went to drop in with some of my friends and realized how much I missed playing hockey and that I could never just quit playing all together. I'm pumped for every game, even though its just men's league.I had to take some time of and didn't play for almost a year. Though I was able to make use of my extra time, I missed playing each an every week.Maybe cut back your playing and see if you still like it.
