The NHL Retirement Thread

I had no idea Phillipe Boucher had played that long...

Might as well go out with a Cup and a Ring!

I was sad to see him leave Dallas, and now sad to see him leave the game.

And I still say the Sydor-Boucher trade was one of the worst we've ever taken part in.

Boucher was injured, and our D-core was hurting for bodies. The trade made sense. His family was still around the metroplex last I heard, so unless they go back to canada, I would expect them to be around a bit.

Playing in Toronto wasn't really an option - although Cujo did get him a jersey and a set of gear made, apparently, just as a keepsake.

I completely agree with TBL - Olie has the right kind of character to make a superb goalie coach. He's a little too taciturn to be a commentator. I'm sure he'll find a ton of opportunities either here or back in Germany.

Maybe I'm biased but I don't see how its even a question. He was one of the elite centers of the 2000s, often with a poor supporting class. Also, he has a great international resume.

No surprise, but Sundin announced his retirement. Leaves as the 25th highest scorer in the NHL. I always liked watching him play and was amazed at how he handled the heat of serving as captain in Toronto. http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=293154

So, HOF'er...? Yes or No?

Yes. Top 25 in scoring is enough alone, I'd say. Is any retired player in the top 25 not in the Hall?

Apart from the numbers, he was an elite center and good spokesman in a tough market and performed well in international play, as well. Not to mention the way he carried himself when surrounded by a weak supporting cast and incompetent front office for so many years.

he should, but i think because he didn't get a ring it'll be harder, think maple leafs will raise a banner of him this season?

That's a little tougher question. I wish he hand't jumped for Vancouver last year, but any fan in TO can't blame him for wanting one last chance to skate with a competetive team after spending so many years in a wasteland.

Given what I've read about him, I think he'd really appreciate a banner and Hall admission, but at the end of the day, I don't think he really cares one way or the other. He seems like a Scott Niedermeyer personality--a guy who loves the game, but is a quiet guy with lots of outside interests and who is happiest when he's out in the woods with family and friends and isn't the center of attention.

Or getting plastered in a club.

Ah I love the assumptions people make...LOL

The only question is if he gets in on his first ballot, and I think he does.

1st ballot for sure, unless it's a really tough year. Best Maple Leaf player of all time, if that doesn't get you in, I don't know what does.

My favourite Sundin highlight was probably the Game 1 OT winner against Ottawa with the hesitation slapper....just an absolute cannon of a shot. You can't really see the puck unless you get the camera from behind the net, but that's about as hard as you can shoot a hockey puck.

Probably my proudest moment as a Leafs fan was when he came back last year and got a tremendous standing ovation from the crowd. There had been a lot of discussion in the media and around the town in general prior to the game as to if he'd get booed because of his 'refusal' to waive his NTC the season before. I have never met a true Leafs fan that held that against him, but my opinion of Toronto hockey fans had sunk to the point that I was sure he was going to be booed heavily. I'm not ashamed to admit that it got a little dusty in my house when I heard the ovation from the crowd coming back from the one TV timeout. Pure class.

Just watched the Sakic jersey retirement ceremony online, all the way here in the UK.

Totally weeped like a baby. To me, the greatest player of all time.

Jesus I'm getting old when two of my three favourite players as a kid retired this year.

I know how you feel mack. I grew up a Jets fan. The number of former Jets in the league is getting slimmer. Khabibulin, Tkachuk, Selanne, Draper and Doan are the last big names that come to mind...

To keep this semi-on-topic, one of my favorite former Jets retired this year - Teppo Numminen. Always respected his thinking man's approach to the game and work ethic. Sadly he never won a Cup, but playing most of your career for Winnipeg, Phoenix and Buffalo will do that to you.
