fatwabbit 93 Report post Posted July 19, 2009 Some of you already know, but I've just officially 'retired' from playing soccer, most likely hockey as well.17 July 2009 - Grading game for indoor soccer, playing against a good team that maybe taking the game a little too seriously. My gut feel before the game was not to play, especially since I was flying out the next day with my family for a short holiday in Melbourne. We havent taken a holiday for 2 years, and since I was going to Melbourne for work we decided to spend some time there together. Game went ok, scored two goals with my left peg, blasting both goals easily past the goalie. Later in the game, i was defending and tried to block a shot... guy shooting was a little too overzealous and followed the blocked shot with his whole body weight. My left knee buckled, and if I wasnt wearing my knee brace I shudder to think how bad it would have been. I've been down this road twice before, and I already know the consequences.... long layoff, and due to work I wont be able to get full time physio going. 3 strikes... time to hang up the boots, and possible hockey skates as well. I've been hobbling around Melbourne the last two days trying to keep a brave face on, and I know my wife knows I'm in pain as well. I've now got the disappointing task to call the State Team Captain/Coach, and tell him I might need to withdraw from the team... as much as I believe I can play in 2 months time for the Nationals, I dont think it would be fair to the guys on the team, nor a replacement if I didnt attend any hockey training or warm up games. Thanks to you guys on MSH, for making me a gear whore... Although it has nearly put me in the poor house, I think I've gained a lot of knowledge, experience, and not to mention a garage FULL of gear. Special thanks to a select few for being my point of contacts in the US, consolidating and shippipng gear to me.... I owe you (and the naggy wives) a drink or two. Also thanks to those who gave me advice on which gear to get instead of something else... you've save me a ton of money that could have been used elsewhere.Moving forward, I might be managing the indoor soccer team... just making sure we have eyes on how we are going, which players need to swap out earlier than usual. I wish I hadnt accepted the task of coaching some of the junior hockey team members, as I dont even know if I can skate now. I also wish I hadnt gone and gotten nearly a full set of goalie gear.... I love making glove saves with a big windmill, doubt that will happen again.I'm only going to keep one set of gear, hoping that I can play again.... everything else, including all my newly acquired goalie gear is going up for sale. Shoot me a PM or two if you think I might have what you want, chances are I've got it. Make me a reasonable offer, and we can work something out. For those that have yet to send out the gear to me, please send me a PM and we'lll work something out. Some still owe me some money, and we'lll work the best possible way forward. Thanks again guys... I'll still be around for sure, cant drive the whore out of me. I wont be able to reply to emials or PMs for the next few days, but once I'm back home I'll reply when I can. hockeyherb 1 Report post Posted July 19, 2009 It's actually unbelievable lately how many guys in our hockey league are getting injured playing soccer. I bought out a guy's spring season because he broke his foot at a soccer game.Good luck to you - hope you can play again. I'd go nuts if I had to hang up my skates now so I can imagine how you feel. ndlancer95 0 Report post Posted July 19, 2009 I've played hockey for 8 years and have never been injured, but i've broken 5 bones off of the ice. Seems as if I;m not the only one that gets injured off of the ice often. I feel sorry for you, as I have lost playing hockey for 2 years before, and have gone nuts in that short time. Hope you recover quickly and try to stay sane

fatwabbit 93 Report post Posted July 20, 2009 update... able to walk today without a knee brace, but the knee still feels very 'empty'... cant explain the feeling, just that its a fear and loss of feeling in it... like somethings missing.Spoke to the State Captain today, he said give it a few more days and we'll have a chat next week...Fingers crossed, we'll be back. Thanks for the blessings guys... This will be my final shot at competitive hockey (if I can get back in time)... anyone ever see a coach without skates? ;)As for the gear for sale, you've already seen some of it listed in my threads.... I'll update when I get back home next week.
ktang 34 Report post Posted July 20, 2009 Good luck with the re-hab, especially since your work will prevent full physio.Maybe keeping a shiny new pair of skates or stick will encourage you to re-hab after work?

Darkbyte 0 Report post Posted July 20, 2009 anyone ever see a coach without skates? ;)Brendon coaches beginners and state teams and you never see him on skates (not sure if he can skate to be honest). Considering the kids dont have a coach at all a skateless one is more than adequate :)

Monty22 833 Report post Posted July 21, 2009 Have you seen an ortho/had a work up done? May be worth it before selling all your gear and retiring too early...
Aussie Joe 0 Report post Posted July 21, 2009 I hope you still stay with it and contribute to hockey off the rink Kev. I know WA always needs good hockey people and if your heart is in the right place you can make a difference whether on the rink or not. Keep your chin up and never let the Zebras get you down. phunky_monkey 6 Report post Posted July 21, 2009 Not good at all Kev, hope it feels better mate and you can make some sort of recovery. It's just a shame that knees take such a pounding in Hockey and Soccer.
fatwabbit 93 Report post Posted July 21, 2009 Have you seen an ortho/had a work up done? May be worth it before selling all your gear and retiring too early...Hey Monty, didnt see an ortho for this, but having gone thru a torn ACL (two operations to reconstruct) and a Grade 2 strained MCL, I pretty much know the feeling and hate hearing the sound of the ligament...Went thru physio for both the above, and really hated it. But the motivation was to get back to playing asap. I know that most likely I can still play, but maybe not competitively. We see how it goes, today is the 4th day and I'm confident enough to walk about without the knee brace, but still have a neoprene sleeve to give some compression support.I've been attending some training the last few days, and its not easy getting up and about our machinery (work for a earthmoving company)... but at least during the classroom sessions I'm stretching, and trying to get full range of movements back in my knee. I'm able to get to a half squat now, but thats about how far I can bend my knee at this stage... updates on possible recovery will be done periodically... I aint going to give up fighting! fatwabbit 93 Report post Posted July 22, 2009 Update today... put some 'deep heat' ointment on the knee last night, and it was working alright. I think the cold Melbourne air and the stiffness in the morning wasnt helping. Didnt help that we had to climb up some embankments/batters, or climb in and out of machines all morning. Kinda loosened up a little at lunchtime.able to get a little more mobility in the knee, just feels very stiff or sore once it tops out (full extension at 180deg, or at about <70deg. I'm able to put pressure on it, and can actually rock on my chair with just the injured leg. Thanks for the well wishes guys... keeps me going

jrhky36 1 Report post Posted July 24, 2009 all in all a bum deal. earlier this spring i thought i tore my acl a second time. had an mri and it showed everything in tact. the problem was a major bone bruise just below the knee joint. hurt like a bitch for some time. finally healed nicely though. i hope you only have a deep bone bruise, and not the dreaded acl/mcl/pcl injury. best wishes. fatwabbit 93 Report post Posted August 3, 2009 Update... been getting a chiropractor to adjust my spine, and also do some manipulation of the leg/knee. He's brought the swelling down to almost nothing, and has actually made walking less painful. Am back to walking almost effortlessly, and sometimes not even thinking about the knee at all. Its still really sore in the mornings, but once I stretch it a little its alright. Going to see the knee specialist this Thursday, and we'll see what he says. I'm 60% confident that I'll be playing soon, resisting the urge to lace up and skate with the junior team this week. Did some puck handling in the garage last night with my son, and never really thought about the knee as I shifted from side to side.
