goaliemanshark 6 Report post Posted July 28, 2009 Hey guys, this may sound like a really dumb question, just wanted some input. I was watching some video of helmet cams used in ice hockey and was trying to think how i could do the same. So i grabbed and old helmet with a full plastic shield and just threw my iphone in there right in front of my chip cup zip tied it down, and hit the record button. The quality was great, and the phone was securely in place. I wasnt planning on doing this for a full game, just a few shifts here and there. Would my phone get all gross from me breathing hard? Let say i get hit and fall, could i damage the phone or my face (i play in a no checking league, but i have been hit plenty of time)? The phone wasnt touching my nose, but it was pretty close, is this safe? Is this illegal? I just thought it was a interesting idea. What do you all think? Here is a picture incase my description was terrible.
furlanitalia 1 Report post Posted July 28, 2009 How would you drink water? I know I wouldn't throw my 3GS in front of my face while playing, but I don't see there being any major damage if its secured in place. Got to be a better way though....
Giroux28 0 Report post Posted July 28, 2009 i dont think it will be damaged to due to breathing hard on it but some problems i could see happening are say you fall and face hits the phone possibilities are you can maybe knock a tooth out maybe do some face damage and possibly breaking the phone but who knows maybe i could be wrong and i wish you the best of luck for however you decide to make a helmet camera
McDougalfaschnitzer 32 Report post Posted July 28, 2009 If anything I would experiment with it first at a stick and puck type deal where you can see how it holds up in a more safe environment. Skate around, take a few falls on purpose, work up a sweat and such, and check the results.
goaliemanshark 6 Report post Posted July 28, 2009 Very good point with the water! I didnt think of that! My plan was to bring two helmets onto the ice and just switch helmets every shift, or until i captured something cool with the camera. I could drink water when the helmet was off in between helmet switches. The shield and helmet (old z-leader full shield and ccm xray helmet) secures my head very well and i dont think it is possible for any part of my face to hit the phone on a hard impact, unless the helmet breaks in some sort of way. Is there any way the lens could fog when inside the shield? I assume i will have worked up a sweat and therefore steam would rise up into the phone, which cant be good for it. Is there a cage that is particularly roomy on the market? So i could place the phone farther away from my sweaty face?Ill try something on friday when i go to stick and shoot and post the video for you guys

I would think that if you sweat a lot you could ruin the phone with water damage or at the very least void your warranty if the water strips get tripped. I wouldn't do it.If you really want a helmet camera I would look online for a cheap one.
goaliemanshark 6 Report post Posted July 28, 2009 I dont think the water sensor will get tripped from a 2 minute shift on the ice, i could always plug up the headphone jack (where the water sensor is) Unless i fall (which rarely happens) and get a nice snow shower i dont see it happening. Now that i said this though im prolly screwed.
shotty 7 Report post Posted July 28, 2009 i wouldn't put anything like that anywhere near my face. if anything, i'd fix it to the chest portion of the shoulder pads so just the lens is poking out above the pad and jersey. it's protected by the shoulder pad, its out of your way, and its still a decent angle. RecLeagueHero 0 Report post Posted July 28, 2009 Buy on old camcorder off Ebay and tape it to the top of your helmet. I really can't see using an expensive phone considering it could fall off and break, get hit with a puck, get hit with a stick, you could fall on smash it on the ice, potental water damage, and we could go on. chk hrd 164 Report post Posted July 28, 2009 will your league allow you to even wear it while you play?
goaliemanshark 6 Report post Posted July 28, 2009 Thats a very good question, and my answer would lean towards yes, they are very lax. But i havent asked yet. To tell you the truth, i havent signed a waiver for the league yet (its been almost 2 months)

McDougalfaschnitzer 32 Report post Posted July 29, 2009 With the current tools at my disposal, the only ghetto camera rig I could do would be to strap my mini laptop to upper body (could put it in a neoprene sleeve) while a usb webcam would go up to the top of my helmet where it would be secured by tape haha
number21 3 Report post Posted July 29, 2009 if you're that into it spend $50-100 on a helmet cam and save your iphone!

steve66 45 Report post Posted July 29, 2009 the camera they used in this video was the VIO POV 1.5, great quality. The advantage it has over the Hero GO PRO camera is that it shoots for more than 30 seconds at a time. But the Hero system is a little cheaper
rob1215 0 Report post Posted July 29, 2009 Do you really want to risk your iphone. You can get a helmet cam like the one’s they use for skateboarding for $20.
goaliemanshark 6 Report post Posted July 30, 2009 Alright i figured i would give this a shot and drop some money into this idea. I did some research and went to REI and decided to try the GOPRO hero wide ($200) after looking at some reviews and test videos on youtube. I wanted to try the contour HD ($300), but they didnt have it in stock. Im probably going to go to public skate tonight and will bring my helmet, camera and iphone and try some things out! Luckily REI has a insane return policy, so if im not happy with the results from the GOPRO i can just return it Here are some pictures of the setup with the camera and my s17.warning 3 pics... Law Goalie 147 Report post Posted July 30, 2009 You might want to angle it very slightly downward if you keep it on top.Mounting it on your stick side of the helmet is probably ideal in terms of optics, but then if you go down on your side or get smeared onto the glass, goodbye camera. reyno2ac 0 Report post Posted July 30, 2009 ^That looks like it has a great chance of ripping right off if it gets hit by anything.
goaliemanshark 6 Report post Posted July 30, 2009 I put it on the top mainly because its the only place on my helmet where there is enough surface area to put the sticky pad on securely. I dont think it will get ripped off by a puck, because i am in a really low league and most people dont elevate the puck much. A stick, the ice and the boards most could quite possibly rip it off, but it is a pretty rugged little camera. So hopefully it will work ok! I really want to try the contour hd because it is much lower profile, you can rotate the lens (with lasers) and it has a 60 FPS mode (on top of the enhanced resolution). shotty 7 Report post Posted July 30, 2009 if you could rotate the lens, side mount would be ideal.
Chadd 916 Report post Posted July 30, 2009 ^That looks like it has a great chance of ripping right off if it gets hit by anything.I can't imagine any ref allowing that in a game, it's a potential hazard to the other players. Plus, in our league it would last ten seconds before someone ripped it off, just to be a dick.
goaliemanshark 6 Report post Posted July 30, 2009 Alright i tried it tonight, and i think it worked really well! I need to mess with the audio to have be it audible, and learn all the settings. I accidentally took two pictures instead of video the first time i tried it. Here is the video i took tonight! at How is it a potential hazard in any way? The camera is lighter and smaller then a puck, and wouldnt get throw around. I play in a rec adult D league the guys arent dicks at all. I think it would be a good training tool and allow my friends to see whats its like on the bench as well as the ice. Also we could actually have some footage of our games. I see no downside other then its distracting, and it cost 200 dollars.
