effects of a concussion?

Recommended Posts

So Last night I got my first minor concussion due to me having my head down for that slight second and got nailed to the head which black me out for like couple seconds before I got up and skated to the bench. After the game I went home and my vision seemed to be a bit distorted. After I woke up this morning, my head's been spinning and hurting even trying to shake my head a little it seems to hurt quite a fair bit. Is this something I should worry to much about or should I just take it easy and relax for a bit before I get back into the next game?

If you blacked out on the ice, you should of left the game and went straight to the doctors. You're not suppose to sleep for a period of 12 hours or so after hitting your head either. I suggest going straight to your doctors, ASAP. If you don't, and instead decide to play without proper clearance, you could be on the tail end of second-impact syndrome, and be potentially fucked for the year with concussion symptoms.

A little advice from someone who has had an unneccessary amount of concussion.......... treat the first one properly, if you don't its all down hill from there and you can eventually become so susceptible to them that even the slightest shot to the head can result in a severe concussion. I'm not trying to scare you but do a little research on athletes like Lindros, Lafontaine, and NFL'er Bill Romanowski to find out what can happen if you don't treat concussions properly

Like everyone said, go to urgent care or a doctor, get examined. You're probably going to be fine, but it takes a while to recover. You need to heal, and any activity or stress could set you back. If you take plenty of time to get healed up, you'll be much better off in the long run.

Might also want to look at those new Messier helmets, at least maybe for a while.

I've been out of work for six weeks because of a concussion so this one really hits close to home for me.

Go to a doctor ASAP, get a CT scan and/or MRI to make sure everything is ok and follow their orders regarding your recovery. Take things very easy, don't push it and don't even consider playing again unless you've been symptom free for more than a week. It took close to a month before my vision and speech were back to normal and I still get massive headaches, nausea or dizziness when I elevate my pulse for more than a few minutes.

Damn man, I'm really sorry to hear that. I've been blessed with a very thick skull, literally and figuratively. I've had my head bounced off concrete and only had a mild headache and was dizzy for a few minutes. But if you ever black out from a hit to the head STOP PLAYING, SEE A DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY!

I suffered my 4th and worst concussion around 6 years ago. I have seemingly permanent short-term memory problems since that concussion. I guess I'm fortunate to still be leading a pretty normal life, but my brain was scrambled pretty good.

Go see a doctor, you don't want to mess around with the ol' noggin.

Chadd,

Hope things get back to normal for you soon. I had a good month of light & noise sensitivity before things settled down for me. Of course the memory thing sucks...hope you heal up 100%.

Thanks, things are getting better a little bit at a time. Last weekend I almost passed out when we went to Lowes, I'm thinking it was the lighting that really threw me for a loop.

Last bad one I had kept me out of virtually anything for about three months. Had a few before that and always bounced back but that probably lead to the big one. Easily the worst sports-related injury I've had and I've torn a labrum.

I haven't had one that bad since I was downhill roller skating as a kid.....downhill roller skating right into a car (parked, which makes it super impressive).

I had one in an exhibition game last season. I know, pre season of all things. Granted we were against the #3 team in the country for our league, so I was a bit mismatched both in terms of skill and size. I got drilled trying to handle a bad pass at the blue line and was sent flying head first into the boards. I saw stars and had headaches / dizziness for 3 days. Played no contact in practice for a few weeks. If it were any worse, I wouldn't have skated at all.

There's two parts of my body I don't mess around with when things aren't normal. The first is my head. The other is my knees. Take every precaution for sure.

Hope you have a quick, full recovery. You too, Chadd. I hate to hear about these things but it's the risk we run to play such a great game.

Let's just say that when they tell you keep your seatbelt buckled on an airplane, they have a damn good reason for it.

If you are prone to concusions, I would highly recommend you check out the computer program that is out there used to evaluate if your concusion is healed or not. Do not remember the link but you should be able to find it with google. You sit down and take a 1/2 hour long test on your computer, and save the results. After you get shmaltzed, you then retake the same test, and the computer can analyze if your brain is ready to play, or still tapiocca, based on your test answers compared to the original answers.

If you are not a doctor, I would highly recommend not giving out any advice on self diagnosing when you are better from a concussion.

that said, it may be wise to talk to your doctor about conducting baseline tests, but i would not interpret them yourself.

The computer program, as I remember, is set up so a non-technical guy, like the coach of a team, can analyze the data and determine if the player is ready.

I agree, if you have the money, by all means go to the doctor and get checked out. I would hazzard a guess that half of the people on this board (those without insurance) could not afford to do that.

If you are prone to concussions and can't afford to go to the doctor, you need to give up the game for a while after a concussion. As great as the sport of hockey is, nothing is worth being a vegetable for the rest of your life.

Your estimate that half the people on this site don't have insurance doesn't hold up statistically.

^ Agreed, this is exactly why I gracefully stepped away. Now I have a good job with fantastic benefits.

The last concussion wasn't only scary because of the lasting memory problems, the bill was INSANE. Hopefully I can move along without anymore problems. One more concussion and I will probably quit for good, it just isn't worth the risk to me.

Did anyone catch the story about concussions on 60 Minutes(I think) last week? Seems like the more they learn, the scarier these things get.

Well after a week of not playing hockey it looks like everything is back to normal and the headaches was only there for a day or two, I noticed during that time when i shook my head it would also hurt a bit. Its fine now and went to practice tonight and can't believe how much I missed hockey already lol.
