Favorite wood sticks

Recommended Posts

I almost bought a 5030 today, but the weight of wood sticks really turn me off.

my SynSi-Core's are listed as 455g, it doesn't seem as if my 5030's are heavier enough to complain about. I certainly don't complain about the Si-Core's being 30-ish or so g's heavier than my R10 & U+ not to mention the Tacki-Mac grips & Bladetape that increase the weight by half

I had a game a couple years ago, and while I was taping up my Si-Core I noticed the blade split right down the middle. I went out to the garage and grabbed my dad's Bauer 4000 (I think it was a 4000). Easily the best wood stick I've ever used. Pronger curve. If I ever came across them (I'd know one to see one) again, I would easily buy them in bunches. I actually used it over the other Si-Core I had at the time, until the Bauer broke. Absolutely great stick.

Sorry to go a little off topic here... but after checking out the 2010 Bauer catalogue, I noticed there weren't any wood sticks to be found in the catalogue. Is Bauer ending production of wood sticks?

Was a big Easton Z-Carbon user as a kid, a more expensive woody back then (50$)

+1 for the 5030's and PMP's too

All time favorite was the Montreal 4400 and the CCM Groovelight. lol

No love for the 9950? I had some of the standard blades (from a jr a team, so probably some specialty markups? or something for a team sponsored by sherwood?) but anyways it made me want to try a 9950 stick, i did and it was pretty decent.

My uncle's a big 9950 fan...but he's over 6' and 225 pounds as a former champion bodybuilder. I can barely flex a 7000.

From last update: Currently rotating a 5030 Havlat and a Koho Torpedo Jagr. The RbK Crosby curve just wasn't doing it for me, so I turned it into a junior stick for my sister and a grip stick. I like the curve on the havlat, it's like a mid curve that kinks in the middle, as opposed to the jagr which is a gradual curve. If i get at least 100 for christmas, i'm picking at least 1 more Havlat stick up for 33 at my local proshop

stocked up on some naslund pro one60's a couple years ago, i should use them more.

you might as well enjoy and use them now, the wood is just going to get more dry and brittle.

Once a wood stick is around 5 years old I really wonder how much give it has on in terms of flex.

I remember talking with an ex OHL player and he always loved getting a fresh batch of wood sticks and the snap he could get. I never got a fresh batch of wood sticks so I can't comment on how good it would feel/perform.

the Sherwood 9950 stick and standard 950 blade are 2 totally different things. The 9950 stick is 115 flex and has lots of fibreglass/graphite which makes it extremely stiff and heavy stick. The 950 blade you could stick that on a shaft of your choice.

Anyone know whether the blade stays relatively "fresh"? Most of the wood blades on the sticks we are talking about are completely wrapped in fiberglass so they are somewhat sealed from oxygen. Also, wood is also naturally expanding and contracting, I think the dryness issue would have more to do with where they have been stored, no?

1. Kitchener Bobby Smith Pro return - tons of graphite on the blade, stiff as anything.

2. Titan TPM - Gretzky pattern with a few Clarks and Euro-curve models thrown in.

3. Canadien 6001 - I liked these because I could get them for $15 when I was at University.

I used to go through a lot of wooden sticks, the only ones I didn't like were the Sher-wood 5030 'Feather-lam", the "Feather-lite" was a much better stick.

i agree the storage area plays a part and so does the fibreglass wrap, but I think the blade still continues to deteriorate on its own. From some of my 7-10 year old wood blades there doesn't seem much give.
