I just wish the announcers would realize that its about the game, not them. Know your facts, players, and true terms. Call the games with passion, but not with screaming and slang terms trying to one up every other announcer.

Im on board with you guys on this one...Pierre McGuire annoys the snot out of me.

McGuire should be called Cheezy Spazz McSegue. Watch the next time he does the intermission "report" with Mike Milbury. Most forced and cheezy segues ever. He is a total spazz.

Doc's nerdy voice really gets on my nerves. And listen to how often he and McGuire consistently talk over the play! It's getting ridiculous. They are definitely calling the game for a different set of viewers out there.

Eddie Olczyk is okay. I respect him because he knows the game as a good player and is humble, and so I guess he doesn't bother me when he talks a bit too much. If it wasn't for him doing the color, I'd have a very hard time watching those games.

I liked Thorne and Clement on ESPN the best. At least Thorne called the freakin game!

I also loved Gary Thorne & Bill Clement. Thorne has a great voice for broadcasting.

Edzo was great when he was the color guy for the Pens with Mike Lange. Circle me Edzo!

Doc Emrick? I respect the guy for his knowledge but he seems to be more suited to calling figure skating.

Did anyone watch NHL network's NHL Live yesterday? First caller had to be one of you... "Game was great and great for hockey, but dman that Pierre McGuire innoyed the shit out of me. Has to be the worst announcer in hockey, don't you guys agree?" Then funniest thing was you could tell they agreed with him, but couldn't say that they did, just kind of said everyone calls things differently.

Quite hilarious was to start yesterday.

Oh, and who is the guy who did like NHL02-08 or so? The canadian hockey night in canada guy. Hear him all the time when i listen to leafs or something.

He needs to be the announcer of the SCF.

The biggest problem with Jim Hugheson is that he doesn't work well with others. He ends up being the play by play and color guy more often than not because he never gives the other guy a chance to talk.

Thats why in the old EA NHL games it was 90% hughson and then a color guy making corny jokes. He's great though, I'd love to listen to games with him in a one man booth.

Heh. Reminds me of the time recently where Pierre dropped by to work color with Chuck Kaiton on a Hurricanes radio call for a period, seemingly just for the heck of it. Chuck is so used to working alone that McGuire could hardly get a word in.

Vs, NBC, and Primeticket games make me so happy to be in an LA Kings market. Bob Miller and Jim Fox are the best. Watching Ducks games on Primeticket are so awful.

I personally like doc and that's coming from a ranger fan. Really though, when it was doc and JD doing the game of the week or the olympics, that was pure gold, pure gold...I really want JD to succeed because he seems like such a great guy, but once in a while I hope he gets fired just so he might come back as an analyst. He was great.

Ya know what bugs me...not just NBC...but all hockey announcers: The 'slang' terms that are being used during broadcasts.

....whatever. Those aren't proper terms for things...I think they should be held to a better standard of language to call the games. Quit trying to sound cool. Let the kids on facebook talk about their "sick swag" and "filthy dirt" and "toed it up to go bar down"...and whatever the hell else they say. Stuff like that coming from Doc, or Jim Hughson or Darren Pang is just silly. I think the TSN guys have stayed away from it...Gord Miller and Chris Cuthbert are pretty damn good...and if they do use it...they qualify it as "what do the kids say?" kind of thing. Which, at the very least is showing an interest in connecting to the audience while realizing it's not proper calls.

I couldn't agree more, as a Bruins fan and watching NESN I have to listen to Jack Edwards every game. I swear he makes up new terms to use every few games. The worst is when the Bruins are on VS and then have to listen to Joe Beninati.

NESN actually had a Jack Edwards "Bingo". There were some local bars that supposedly came up with the idea.

Beninati does a pretty solid job. I'd put him into the top five play by play guys out there right now. Other than falling back on a few pet phrases, it's hard to criticize his work.

Nothing touches the love fest in Pittsburgh with their play by play guy. He needs to punched right in the middle of his face. It's painful to listen too.

It's not fair to group the 'homerism' of the local announcers into these discussions. The home Radio or TV guys often work for the team, and are supposed to slant their call that way. Not to say they don't give the visitors proper credit when it is called for. But you should be able to tell by the goal calls who they are calling for.

I think most of this discussion is centered around the Network guys who are supposed to be impartial in the call.

That's true but someone mentioned Jack Edwards and I happened to be watching the Pens-Rags game and I felt the compulsion to say something. I agree that most of the announcers are homers and are sort of supposed to be but the degree that the Pitt guys go to is unbelievably over the top. I would imagine that it makes most serious hockey fans that root for the Pens cringe as well.

Their blatant homerism, plus that one guy always finishing sentences in "Steggy" makes me want to shoot myself in face. I dread it when the only feed I can get on Center Ice is the Pens home feed.
