Lefty/Righty Shooters. USA/Canada

Recommended Posts

The coach of our team was dumbfounded when he saw that out of 15 people we only had 2 lefties. Flat out told us we were doing it wrong, haha.... he also said it was too late to fix it now  .

New York born. Write left, shoot right. I bat and golf right. Throw left and play street hockey goalie left. Ture lefty in a righty world so we have to adapt.

Canadian...shoot left, golf and bat left handed...and I am right handed.

On my son's rep team only 3 right handed shots.

I guess we really are a bunch of "lefties"...

I'm a funny case because I'm kind of ambidextrous but generally right hand dominant 60% of the time and shoot left. Shooting another way would just feel insane to me, and I use my left hand for lots of daily tasks, just couldn't imagine it. Any case, both US and Canada players numbers are skewed. In the US, hockey ignorant people think it's the same as baseball and shoot "righty". In Canada, coaches would insist players shoot left to keep in accordance with their "plan". Ultimately, I argue the terms are completely wrong, right hand on top should be called right handed to dispel the myth.

Right handed, but shoot left. My brother is right handed and shoots right. When I was a kid, I didn't really know what the markings on the sticks meant, so I was always looking for the small stick, as I was certain that the L/G (large) stick was too big for me, and that's why it had to be cut down.

Shoot left, bat left, golf left. Throw righty and write with my right hand.

+1...my LHS also sells high end golf equipment. LH sticks in decent curves don't last long and LH golf equipment is sparse (though they'll order whatever you want of course).

I find being a LH golfer is far tougher than being a LH hockey player.

When I first started playing shin hockey w/ my 2 year old he gripped it like a lefty immediately so I'm hoping it stays that way.

I shoot left but write, throw and bat right. I remember reading something a while back about how the reason more Americans are right handed shots is because more often then not the first sport they play is baseball, and they often bat right handed. So when they start playing hockey they simply transfer over the swinging motion, which feels more natural then doing it the other way round. Where as in Canada the first sport played is hockey, and they usually hold the stick in one hand only, the dominant one, which is typically the right.

Ditto from a Kingstonian - though I am, of course, also a goalie, which pretty much means I have to shoot left if I'm right-handed.

American.

Shoot Left, Bat Right, Golf Right, Write Right-Handed.

Played hockey before every other sport, just seemed natural to go this way.

righty shoot right but can shoot left, i bat switch and i throw/write right, i'm not ambidextrous, but i do find my stickhandling's a lil better when i shoot lefty but the drop off in accuracy and power in shots just don't make it worth it, and in batting i get more power righty but i get a lil better accuracy lefty

Michigan born/raised: Shoot left... everything else right handed. In my case, I think it is mostly attributable to the fact that my first backyard hockey stick when I was 5 was my dads old stick (lefty) cut down to size.

For my son, I simply bought him his first stick with a straight blade and let nature take over. He ended up a right handed shot, but writes lefty.

American, but grew up close to the border:

Left handed. Shoot right, golf right, play tennis left. Can bat either way, though am stronger batting left.

I'm old enough that my first stick was a flat bladed Northland. I think every kid would be better off starting that way. It's too bad so many sticks, even junior sticks, aren't available with a flat blade.

Slovak-Born living in Canada.

Shoot left, golf left, throw right, write right.

If you don't write right then you're writing wrong. :P

Though the shooting right might change, I've been playing in a beginner league left handed, experiment has been going well. My stick handling is night and day better, however my shot is pathetic. My wristers are a solid 10-20 mph slower, and I can't take a slap shot to save my life. Another benefit is my stick work on defense is a lot better. Having my dominant hand on top gives me more strength and control when I go one handed on defense. I think I will continue playing 2 leagues for another year and see how it goes, hopefully my shot left handed can catch up to my shot right handed.

Those that come to the game later in life and put their dominant hand lower on the stick may lose some stickhandling but will generally gain in shot power.
