Bauer and Malkin?

Other than sticks and skates (and glove colours) I don't see why guys would change their protective. How many guys do you see changing their protective once they find something comfy?

Stamkos went from P92 to a custom variant. I'm sure there are others also.

Hedman is in retail Reebok protective, I think younger guys will start to go with retail makes over time.

Define "retail" Reebok. Keep in mind that they make the same style in both Sweden and China. Pro teams get the Swedish-made equipment.

He's not in the usual pro Reebok. Retail graphics and all.

personally i think they should bring up stamkos to p92 and move backstrom to pm9..

backstrom pm9

stamkos p92

gagne p106

richards p14

kane p88

staal p91a

solid line up in terms of names i think

That would make sense (Backstrom = playmaker, Stamkos = shooter), but aren't they trying to get away from names anyway? Most of the online sites seem to only go by pattern #.

PM9 Malkin..he's a "shooter" too IMO

I agree, I'd go with the numbers only, but it probably is a marketing issue. How many of you know the number code for the "Coffey" curve?

P77 right?

But it is a good point. The average consumer doesn't even know they type of curve they have, just the name. But if you can get the name they remember to be a number, then it's a lot less annoying when somebody comes in saying "I played 20 years ago, this was the curve name, I don't know what it looked like." If they come in and say, "I played 20 years ago and used a PM9", it's a lot easier.

To throw a name I've heard somebody ask about out there, how many people remember what the Bonk curve was?

Anybody else notice Malkin had a pair of Bauer's on Sat game - FOX had a close up of his skates - don't know if it's a temporary thing due to his injury or if he is done with the MLX skates and back on board with Bauer - I believe he still is using the Easton stick

Ya. I think someone posted a pic of him from that game in the gear sightings thread

he's not playing against Detroit, so I bet it was a case of trying to play thru the pain in a different pair of skates, which clearly didn't help him any.

Just curious, does a player who's using a particular brand REALLY inspire you to buy from a brand?

(I ask b/c I work in marketing/advertising design and one of our agency's biggest clients is a Baseball Cleat manufacturer).

No, but I really question when a player dumps a brand for greener pastures. I've noticed a few pros (Malkin and Gonchar for two notables) go from the X:60 to the S19 as of late. Even though pro sticks aren't what they seem to be, that doesn't bode well when players that were head to toe in your equipment go in a whole different direction and not even back to what they were using before.

That has been batted around a lot in this thread, read the earlier pages. I think at times it does though, even though it may not be that direct. For example, I'm a four roll guy, really preferring the classic styled gloves, mostly because it seems a lot of them have the looser feel and bigger wrist areas that I like. I also like how they look. However, when John Tavares Islanders, I saw a picture of his CCM v10s, and even though they defy pretty much everything I like in a glove, I thought they looked great and wanted to check them out the next time I was at an LHS. Maybe that was just because they are a good looking glove, and maybe it was because of me being excited about Tavares starting his career, but regardless it was a succesful move for CCM, putting Tavares in that glove. It got me looking favorably at their glove.

I think it works to a point, specifically the younger/more impressionable players. I got into Easton gloves because of Bure and stayed with them till I went to four-rolls.

Absolutely. I buy Bauer skates cause when I was a kid I saw Sakic and Bure in them. When you're a kid it makes you feel like a pro... to play with the same skates as your idols. Even today I like the fact that i'm wearing the same X60s as Staal, Kane, Richards, etc...
