Oh Pity Me Thread

Recommended Posts

So I am 41 years old and have been playing hockey on a regular basis since I was about 12 and no major injuries at all.

Last night at pickup, during warm ups no less, I guy with his head down runs me into the boards and my leg gets suck. End result, so far, is a broken fibula and badly sprained ankle.

I would feel bad for myself if it was so damn funny.

Wish my story of the injury was cooler. LOL

At our age, the injury stories are never cool anymore, they're usually just sad.

No kidding.

Funny part is I hate going to the Dr and as soon as it happened I knew I was all done. After a burning sensation in my ankle via the twist I felt a pop right below my knee that was followed by another burn.

I mean c'mon. I have been checked hard in games so many times and this. Warm ups at pickup???

Yikes.

Well, I'll add to this -

A month ago, passed the puck and got an assist. One of the other guys is down on the ice, stick in front of him. He sees me coming, I try to step over the stick, however he moves it. I step right on the blade face, and awkwardly start falling forward. Stick out my arm to brace my fall, and POP.

Just got back from the sports doc. MRI results pending, most likely labral tear.

Rule 1-A: if on a 5 on 3 power play- block the shot, block the passing lane with your stick, and man up for the shot you're about to take.

Ruptured testicle resulting from a blocked shot. Swelled to the size of a muskmelon.

To quote the classic Sienfeld episode entiled "The Game" via Kramer ... "I'm out ..."

Any injury to that part of the body trumps just about anything.

I am looking at 6 - 8 weeks before I can start walking normally then we go from there.

Sorry to hear about your injury bro, that sucks. My knee is finally almost back up to snuff and I was so frustrated after just 2 or 3 weeks.

The idea of "manning up" gets a little hazy when the act of "manning up" may just translate to you never manning up again. :o

at the end of the day, i hope you boys heal up ... take the time to get some PT before hitting the ice/rink again.

Here, here... heal up quick, boys. I don't want to know what the PT for a muskmelon-sized testicle involves though :o

Since you're curious- auctioning out the blood clot while using microwaves to break up the clot followed by the doctor fixing the plumbing. After the initial injury, it really wasn't so bad considering other injuries I've had. 6/10 maybe.

Worst I've had was a nasty case of whiplash from a slew foot last year, was dizzy and messed up for a few months because of that one.

I blocked a shot with my boys this past season...holy crap that hurt. Worth it though, it was a one-timer across the slot and the guy had a wide open net. Saved the shot and our goalie got the shutout against the #1 team in the division.

The worst thing that ever happened to me playing hockey was just last week...

Playing in my 3 on 3 league with guys who are up to two years older than I am, and are all used to playing contact I guess because they kept taking the body even though it was a no checking league.

Anyways, this one guy slashed my shin so hard it's the first time I ever felt something through my shin pad. It hurt for like a minute but then I was good again.

Yep. Nothing bad has really ever happened to me in hockey

So last week I was playing in my local HS spring league, and it was a good game going into the second half. In front of the net I go to pick up my man and he throws his stick up like an upward slash and jams my chin piece and my helmet up into my nose. The impact was so much that the chin piece broke my nose when it hit the nostril openings and smashed the divider thing and broke my nose. No blood or anything, but it sure hurt like hell

So I am on day 2 of this thing and I am already going nuts. Despite the cracked femur below the knee I am only wearing a boot which is great but how long is the rehab on the sprained ankle part of it?

Dr says 8 weeks or so but I would like to come back quicker. Come back as in normality vs playing hockey as that will probably be a while.

Hurts like a mother but the Dr said start walking on it right away.

I have never been tied down like this before, well maybe in other ways :), and its driving me nuts.

Point of this thread ... see the title :)
