Most Over-Rated Players in the NHL

Recommended Posts

I wish to finally get off my chest that I believe that Jay Bouwmeester us the most over paid and over-rated player in the NHL.

Some basic stat's to support my theory that he is not worth 6.6 million a year...

-over 2000 minutes in icetime second only to Duncan Keith for TOI

-43 other defencemen had as many or more assists

-55 other defencemen had as many or more points

-138 other defencemen had as many or more goals

-never played in NHL playoffs in entire career (only playoff experience was in AHL during scab year, where he played 18 games and didn't register a single point)

Wow, that was therapudic. Please feel free to add your own disappointments.

Bouwmeester just played year one of his new contract with a new team. I wasn't expecting him to put up amazing numbers, especially for Calgary, who couldn't score last season to begin with. Aside from that, he played his previous years with Florida, a team that hasn't been playoff worthy for a LONG time. No talent around him = no opportunity to put up numbers. Even then, he still put up anywhere from 40-50 points every season, which is good for a defenseman of his stature. You compare him to guys like Duncan Keith, or Mike Green...well those guys are just glorified offensive players if you ask me. Jay Bouwmeester has the potential to be every bit as good as Chris Pronger is.

I gotta say Roberto Luongo, or Carey Price are the most overrated players in the league. I'm sorry, but I don't see the lovejoy everyone has for Carey Price. They touted him as the next Patrick Roy, yet I've seen nothing but a backup goalie since he came into the league.

Goalies get most of the blame for this, but player-wise, for me, hands-down it's Dion Phaneuf.

I always felt Luongo was completely overrated and I remember an ESPN (I think?) article where they anonymously asked NHL players who they thought was the most overrated player in the game, Luongo won. lol.

But seriously, he always has like 3 awesome games followed by a disastrous game. Also, he can scratch his ass and the crowd chants his name.

I concur with the Price analysis, I think his career has been like a Raycroft... one great year and then resting on the laurels and riding out the string with overwhelming mediocrity.

As for Bouwmeester he hand picked his team through UFA, he had more help in Calgary than he ever had in Florida and did even less with it.

While were on Calgary too Sutter has plummeted down in my books. They were a playoff team until the trade with Toronto, at which point Toronto got better and Calgary got worse.

I'm not great with stats can anyone post the records of the two teams after the trade?

I think it was Phaneuf who won that award. But Luongo is probably up there on the most overrated player list...he's definitely not a playoff goalie.

Can you really hold a lack of playoff experience against a guy who toiled in Florida for the beginning of his career. If he was only second to Duncan Keith in TOI then he must have been doing something right, most likely playing against the opposition's top line every night and being in the top PK pairing.

I hate to say it, because he seems like a great kid, but Luke Schenn is ridiculously overrated in Toronto. I don't see any possibility of being better than a 4-6 depending on the team.... he's just too slow to play anything but a very simple stay at home game. Nothing wrong with that, but to hear the Leafs faithful talk, they're expecting much, much more.

Carey Price is a funny case. He's arguably the most gifted goalie to come along in a long time: gifted with great size, a body freakishly well-suited to goaltending, and an astonishing skillset. Unfortunately, none of those, even in perfect concert, make for a successful goalie. J.S. Giguere won a Conn Smythe, and he's probably one of the most unathletic professional athletes in history. He makes Gump Worsely look like the Rod Brind'amour of goalies. What he has that Price does not is an extremely disciplined mind, a very consistent, robotic game that makes it supremely easy to play D in front of him, and an ability to cheat with his equipment that we haven't seen since Tony Esposito. I hate to say it, but Price has turned into a bit of a driving-range goalie: great form, amazing ability, but weak when he puts his spikes on.

Luongo, on the other hand, is a bona fide first-class goalie. He has the mental abilities and the physical. His only real problems are a result of some questionable technique that he can get away with most of the time (being huge, quick, and extremely smart), but which really superb offensive players (witness Patrick Kane) can exploit. Though they have quite different styles and abilities, Luongo is, like Giguere, a goalie built to win hockey games. He's not a goalie who will dominate one-on-one matchups, which is mainly why both he and Giguere get torched in shootouts. Somebody like Brodeur or Roy or Hasek, for example, excels in the whole range of situations - that's what separates a first-class goalie from a legendary one. That's not to say they didn't have their weaknesses, but that they could dominate any given moment of the game, and did so for ridiculous stretches (eg. whole playoff series). As the years have gone on, people have started to figure Brodeur out; by contrast, it took them a year to figure out Raycroft, and it took him a long time to get back to a respectable level last year.

We'll see how Phaneuf plays this year, but he's certainly up there. Ditto Spezza, who I greatly admire, but about whom I have serious reservations.

I want to say the last 3 players that won the anonymous players votes were:

Luongo

Bouwmeester

B. Richards

At least, those are the last 3 I remember.

My most overrated....

Roberto Luongo

Jay Bouwmeester

Chris Drury

Drury? Really? I love that guy. He is fantastic!

He's overpaid, that means overrated to most people.

Ok, maybe overpaid moreso than overrated. 7 million a season for a 3rd line center....

1. Carey Price

2. Carey Price

3. Carey Price

Did I mention Carey Price?

Really? Who, exactly, is overrating him?

I may catch a lot of flak for saying this, but I dare say Wayne Gretzky.(Former, though)

Yeah, his stats and Stanley Cup victories are terrible.
