Worst Trend to Happen to Hockey?

Recommended Posts

the other night i saw colby armstrong hit st louis and then downie jumped armstrong...it was kinda ridiculous...i like downie and im all for sticking up for your line mates, but that was a little too much for me

Armstrong isn't known for being a clean hitter. He's one of the worst in the league for going high and doing it late and has been for years.

Worst trend in hockey — Sean Avery, Matt Cooke, Jordin Tootoo and any other cheapshot artist. Cant stand that aspect of Hockey.

Also, what I dont like is the one or two enforcers on the team that clearly have nothing to offer to the team outside of fighting. Yeah, Derek Boogaard and several of his kind shouldn't be on the ice at all.

I'm with you on both of those. Stand up for your actions and guys that can't play shouldn't be on the team.

I don't mind the shoot out. It is what it is but now when these goalies are whining about spinnerama moves and such by the shooters, I mean, shut up. hey Goalie, you've got this over sized gear on and are 6'5" anyway. Stop your crying. Give me Johnny Bower or Gump Worsley any day, old school leather pads and no masks!!

Shootout is fun to watch, but it ain't hockey. 4 on 4 ain't exactly, either. And 3 points available per game can really affect standings and playoff eligibility.

I liked it better when they just kept playing extra periods, sudden death, until someone scored.

I still remember that Leafs game that went to 9 OT periods, good times...

Hockey was originally 7 on 7 with goalies. 4 on 4 doesnt bother me, and if the game keeps progressing the way it is, it may come to a point where it needs to be 4 on 4 or make the ice bigger. Not for a long time, but maybe 30 years in the future.

Never heard that about 7 on 7.

Worst part of 4 on 4 is when a penalty makes it 4 on 3.

This is exactly why they changed it. They wanted more teams in it at the end of the season.

Never happened. The longest leafs game went 6 ots and that was back in 1933.

for me it seems people are trying to make the game softer, i understand that people dont want big bench brawls and all that i agree with that but the fact that they slowly trying to take fighting out of the game kinda pisses me of. Its part of the game. Also the constant rule changes each year are getting annoying leave the game alone is what i say

Yup, on this hit he led with his elbow WHILE St Louis was engaged with another player.

--------------------------------------------

The announcers on most broadcasts in the NHL. There are a couple guys on NHL network, Rick Peckham and the guys in SJ that are really good. Some of the local guys are ok but the guys on VS, jesus christ. Michael Emrick annoys the hell out of me and he reminds me of Alf.

The price we pay for developing equipment technology. 100 bucks for shoulder pads, 150 for pants, are you kidding me?

Exactly. Sadly, it wont change. Im a die hard Rangers fan and it seems like I'm one of the few that cant stand Avery's bullshit antics. On Twitter feeds Avery fans constantly cry about him not getting ice time. Can you blame Torts? The guy takes retarded penalties, talks trash and pisses off the other team which usually leads to them taking a run at Lundqvist or some other player. Avery just needs to get dropped by someone like Jody Shelley.

^^^ Lol, the guardian project is so dumb....

It's not marketed towards you. It's to attract kids to the game that otherwise might not be interested in hockey. (Example) They like the action figure they got at Toys 'R' Us of "The Flyer" then the NHL's hope is that the same little boy takes notice of the NHL team that corresponds with the comic character with the final intention of creating a life-long Flyers fan. Again, completely not marketed towards established hockey fans.

Thank you for clarifying the reasoning behind the guardian project, I had no idea that was their target market, did they buy ads on kids channels as well?

Worst trend? People making everything into a personal insult on the internet. Move on guys.

I think you took my response the wrong way, I just graduated with a comm/marketing degree and was seriously interested in what the guardian project was geared for

sorry chadd

Hands to the face. Every hit is with the arms and elbows, coming right up into my chin. It's funny when I think back, a dozen or so kids I played with have gross scars right on the bottom of the chin because they were all so tough and wore the cages super loose, as they get rocked in the face every game and it opens up again.

Also, I hate how everybody seems to complain about the officials, even though its been like that forever. Yeah, they do make mistakes, but the blatant homerism displayed by everybody from players to fans to announcers drives me insane.

Thanks even though the purist in me dosn't like the concept of the project, it really is doing a great job branding the NHL of the next generation

and that is what it is all about; getting kids that might not know much about hockey interested. The marketing aspect is incredible, P.J's, sheets, shoes, lunch boxes, etc...all those things you Power Ranger, TMNT, Lone Ranger, G.I. Joe kids had. How many kids will see a new super hero that they like and want to be like them (how many of you wore towels and flew like superman).

Purist might call it an insult, but those are the same people who don't want the game to grow and/or get better and some may call it corny but as long as it is bringing positive attention to the NHL and hockey then it is a good thing.

I disagree. It isn't getting people into hockey, I think it's getting people into comic books again.
