2011-2012 Suspension thread

Recommended Posts

Gill kept his path and it didn't look like he stuck his leg out. It sucks for Peverley but I didn't see anything in that play last night to warrant a kneeing penalty and I don't see anything today to warrant supplemental discipline.

I agree completely, but that hasn't stopped the league from suspending guys in the past. Especially when there has been an injury. If Ovechkin did that, people would be howling for his head on a platter.

I agree, it doesn't look like his lower body moves. I think the way Gill flails his elbow out to catch Peverley's shoulder gives the illusion that he also threw his leg out.

Agreed, if it were Marchand or Lucic or Subban instead of Gill, people would be calling for a lifetime ban

He did it against Gonchar in the playoffs, a few years back.

After this was posted in the Gear Sightings thread, I figure it will be good to discuss here: http://www.nesn.com/2012/02/how-many-games-will-kyle-turris-be-suspended-for-hit-on-joe-corvo.html

Ignoring the obvious bias of the announcers, I think the Neil hit was clean. Looks like he left his feet after the contact was made. The Turris hit is difficult to say though. Corvo turned his body to follow through with the pass, exposing his head, right before Turris hit him. Although, if he hadn't turned, it would have been a board from behind. I can't tell for sure whether or not he left his feet prior to initial contact or not.

Neil hit was borderline, could make a case either way. He didn't leave hit feet until after contact, but a case could be made that the head was the principal point of contact. He answered to Chara later in the game, which he obviously didn't have to do, so I don't have much of a problem with no supplemental discipline on that play. The Turris hit however, was from the blind side, leading with the elbow and drove the head into the boards, possibly leaving his feet as well. I'm shocked he didn't get at least 2 games to keep him out of the Boston-Ottawa rematch Tuesday night in Boston. I could see that game getting ugly since Turris likely won't answer with his fists...

I'm not sure that whether or not the player "answered" for it by fighting later in the game should be a criterion for supplemental discipline being administered or not.

nystrom might be next for hitting letang - even milbury was saying he should get 5 games - i couldn't believe my ears

If Nystrom gets a vacation while Turris didn't, I don't even know what to say.

The hit itself was perfectly clean. The intent behind the hit is another story entirely. There is no precedent for suspending a guy for disregarding the puck and laying a hit on someone who had just played the puck and was fair game.

I tend to agree that this hit should be a fine only at worst. The primary point of contact is shoulder to shoulder but there is some contact with the chin of Letang. Yahoo is reporting Letang is out with an upper body injury. I would hope that if Letang were concussed, the trainer and players would help him off the ice rather than let him wander on his own. Plus the on ice assessment by the trainer was pretty quick which when it comes to concussions isn't typical. That gives me the impression that Letang wasn't seeing stars (no pun intended) but had a non-head based injury. But this could all be moot when the NHL reviews the hit, if in fact they do.

i dont know what they will do - im not saying he deserves 5 games - i was just surprised that milbury came out and said 5 games because he always takes the "under" rather than the "over" out of all the commentators

Agreed...it was clean. Dirty, but clean, to quote 2 Fast 2 Furious haha. I don't see that hit getting any supplemental discipline.

I'm a huge Pens fan, but Letang put himself in that position reaching for the puck with a forechecker bearing down on him. He should've played it "normally" and hugged the glass and absorb a hit that way, instead of reaching for it. However, that being said, Nystrom needs to play the 50/50 puck and not try to annihilate someone.

I think a big factor will be there was no penalty called for the hit itself but for the scuffle after the whistle. When looking at the freeze frame of the video, Letang and Nystrom are so close together that it is literally a split second between Letang chipping the puck past Nystrom and contact. If anything, I think Nystrom did a good job of keeping his hands down and away from Letang's face/head.
