Your opinion on shin guards

Recommended Posts

I've been wearing bauer x30s. man do they lack protection, fell hard last night felt it all on the knee cap so time to retire these cheap suckers. So far, I'm interested in the nexus 1000(bauers bulkiest/most protective) and the apx shins (tapered but lighter than the nexus) and the ccm crazy lights. I own the CMM CL shoulders and its one of the best purchases I've made but don't know what to expect from their shin guards. Nexus owners: do you find these to be too wide/bulky?

i have a pair of the nexus 1000. They offer pretty good protection. I really don't find them as bulky as they were made out to be. They are very deep fitting for my legs and tend to move around a little if I don't tape them just right. I would say if you have a LHS you can go to try them all out prior to buying.

CCM shins are very nice and offer great protection since your asking about them. I love the set I have. Mine were Ovi ones that were on clearance so I got a great deal.

Take a look at the Sherwood Nexon shins. I was having the same problem (cheap, thin shins) and went with the n12's. Best part is they were cheap, too.

They are pretty wide, and possibly bulky. I have huge calves and legs all around, so they were perfect for me. YMMV.

If you're going to invest in the Nexus shins, you might as well try the RBK 9k or 11k. They'll solve ANY problem you have with falling on a hard knee cap.

I find the RBK's to be "similar" in weight and width to the Nexus line.

The CCM CL's are also really really nice. They are definitely a bit slimmer and lighter than the RBK or Nexus.

After destroying my knee cap due to the design of Bauer shins, I'll only wear other brands from this point forward.

I have a pair of 9k's and love em. Haven't felt a thing in the month I've had them, be it a shot or fall/collision. They are actually relatively light compared to other brands top/2nd tier shins. The straps are really comfortable and hold the pad in place well. Definitely worth trying them on if you come across a pair at an lhs.

I have been using RBk 11k shins for about 8 months and haven't felt a thing falling or from pucks. I came from ccm pro's that were great but they twisted a lot throughout the game. I highly recommend RBk.

Recently got a pair of 11k's and absolutley love them... tanks.

Only minor complaint is that I tape them as well as the straps to stop them slipping; but that's habit I think, growing up with shins that had no straps.

I use CCM +u and theyre pretty good. They are the ones they had right before the switched to thier current line. Theyre nice and big to provide awesome protection but theyre not at all bulky big. Plus the X straps they use keep them tight without any movement. Theyre pretty much the same as the vector v08 that total hockey has. (couldn't find them any where else)

I have the ccm-cl and love them. I find it strange people talk about the weight of skates but don't talk as much about saving weight on shin pads. Shin pads are the cheapest way to reduce weight on your legs and the ccm-cl are light. Makes a difference imho.

Cheers

Got some 11k couple weeks ago. Much better cushioning on the knee than my One60s. Highly recommend.

Yea I have one60 now. Terrible. Ordering my Nexus 1000s tomorrow.

Not having big problems on knees I bought a pair of EQ30 last summer and I have to say that, having started playing hockey lately even if already able to skate well, they are not bad! We do some kind of contact hockey anyway so I had a couple of hard fall on the ice and haven't feel anything. Only part that makes me concern a bit are the calves since there is almost no protection on the back of the pad, but if you are looking for a cheap, not bulky but not thinny pad, you might check out them (might find some on clearance now)

Been wearing the CL pads and like them a lot. They are very protective, the knee cap is great when going down on them and the grip lining does an awesome job of keeping them from moving around.

I can agree with this. I have the CCM U+ Fit 07 shin pads and am really happy with them. Knee padding offers really nice protection and they fit snug. I have skinny calves/shins and the X-strap pattern helps them stay in place. I also tape down my shin pads so they are good and cemented. They offer good protection for direct on shot blocking, but I've found that if the puck hits the outside of the shins I can feel it. It doesn't necessarily hurt a lot, but it may sting lightly for a second or two. Just my experience. I'm happy with them and won't switch anytime soon.

Same here for the CS-pads on protection - same pad from what I've seen but with additional liner on the inside. X-Strap helps but I wouldn't want to miss the additional tape-job. With that they stay in place and I haven't had any problems blocking shots or taking knee-bumps.

I love the CCM pads, and I'd have a set of crazylights if they offered them in 13". I LOVE my crazylight shoulders.

Nexus 1000 shins should be here tomorrow! :D

the CL shoulders are amazing. swear it saved my back/spine from breaking. Just based on appearance (which isn't saying much) it looks as if the nexus and 11ks are a little more padded than the CL and could possibly be more protective, the other thing is its weight. Nexus1000=580grams 11K's=689grams CMM CL=519grams (for 1 shinguard 14").

Yea, Id guess its a tradeoff for the shins. (For the shoulders, not so much. These CCM CL shoulders seem a lot more protective than most).

I'd be going RBK11k if they made them in 13". My nexus 1000 should be here today :D
