World Juniors Questions?

Why doesn't Team Canada and Team USA have ads on their helmets and or jerseys? Is it cultural?

Why doesn't Team Switzerland have a better equipment budget, some of those players are wearing very old helmets and gloves.

Cultural and money, I'd guess. I'm happy they don't.

Team Switzerland will have more than enough in their budget for helmets in gloves, however their players will not be getting to paid to endorse certain products and instead will be wearing what they want. This is more common with the European countries at all levels of International competition.

Get used to it; the NHL will follow suit soon enough.

It's both cultural and money; they go hand in hand in Europe in terms of this.

I get ads go hand in hand in Europe, it just seems that USA and Canada are missing out on key funding.

My thoughts on the NHL, it needs to be a league wide ad sale or the rich teams will just get richer while the small market teams will struggle with sales. (See board ads in NY or Toronto compared to PHX).

I don't think it has anything to do with endorsements, most teams have a deal with one company for any branded gear shown (except goalies if their gear doesn't have the license it's blacked out). The Swiss team is clearly recycling the team issue gear, granted it's black so if you own black you could wear it.

Thanks for the replies.

Team USA and Canada don't need ads. They have enough funding and support to do without it.

Exactly right.

Now, I believe they do have ads on their unis at other events, like the WC and WWC. I think those sponsors sponsor the entire event including their ads to be on uniforms.

I get that they have plenty of funding but cash is king and can never have enough. I guess it's based on culture and us North Americans aren't happy about the ads.

Does it have to do with Nike being a sponsor of the two teams as well? Sort of like how Nike doesn't allow their golfing athletes to have any other sponsor ads on their clothing?

Probably not, but just wondering.

I believe Nike has the deal with the IIHF for uniforms. (Pants included). Doesn't have anything to do with the individual federations.

And JR is correct on different IIHF tournaments have different sponsors. Usually the World Championships have the same set every year and distribute the ads on the jersey per country to what makes sense. A-la Zepter for Canada, Tissot for the US, ŠKODA for Slovaks and Czechs, Finnair for Finland, Svenska Spel for Sweden, etc etc etc. All the companies makes sense in terms of a marketing standpoint.

pretty sure i saw a couple beat up nike bauer gloves in the russian suisse game so im not so sure about that stuie7

not sure how NBH gloves disproves my point..?

Pro's tend to wear what they want - I'm mean I'm not an expert on how funding to national sports team's in Switzerland works exactly, but I'm pretty sure that the richest country in the world in per person, and a Euro-Hockey-Hotbed, can afford a few thousand dollars on new gloves.

nike hasnt been involved with bauer since a few years ago(3?). it is not a 'current' glove. usa/canada either have apx or brand new 4 rolls

So? what if the player doesn't like the newer gloves?

Here in Europe we don't have the same strict gear rules as North American JR teams does.. For example, Our JR teams doesn't have to use a certain Visor on their helmets or a stick/glove etc from the team sponsor. They use what they are comfortable in.. The only sponsor rule European teams have is that the players must use a Helmet from the Team sponsor. If you don't like or fit well the latest, "flashiest" helmet, the team sponsor supply you a helmet that you like or that fit, it doesn't matter if it's the current model or a helmet that came out 2002. AND, if you don't like the gloves, sticks, skates etc u get from the team sponsor.. Buy/use your own gear... AND it's the same rule for SR players to

this is a picture from a training session of Luleå Hockey (SEL team).. not a JR team but it's the same rules. Luleå is sponsored by Bauer, but Mika Pyörälä (in black) uses Warrior gloves and a Easton RS stick, while Robin Jonsson Prefers a OLD Bauer 4500 helmet and old Graf supras..

From what I understand from this and your previous post, you're either saying that the players are wearing what they want and that is why they are wearing older gloves or that Switzerland has enough money to buy new gear.

If the point that they are wearing what they what is true, I highly doubt that the majority of the team would be wearing NikeBauer XXXX gloves. There would be a mix of various brands.

If the point that Switzerland has enough money was true, why would the majority of the team be wearing 5 year old gloves and helmets?

There's a mix of old NBH gloves like you say AND new TotalOne, 4 Roll and what looks to be like new X60 gloves.

Answer stays the same - looks to me like the players just wear what they want, probably because they didn't want to break in new gloves.

Sorry but this idea that Switzerland can't afford it's WJC team to have new gloves is inconceivable.

Of course the Swiss team has money. Money is nerver an issue in Switzerland!!.. Why cant the whole team choose a older model helmet? All international teams gets a selection of gear supplied by their sponsor each tournament. Canada and Switzerland has the same colorscheme and both get gear from Bauer, Guess which team who can pick gear first? A few years ago at JRWC Team Canada and USA got nbh XXXlites while the rest got a few XXXlites but mostly nbh Prolites... Fair?

Every picture I've found they are wearing the same gloves. Maybe they just had a lot if them sitting around?

And obviously they weren't at a disadvantage using those gloves, they played very well.

Slightly off topic question - Does anyone know the exact rules for who has to wear a full shield and who doesn't? I know it's an age issue, but it seems like there are some kids that are 17 that are wearing visors, while there are other 17 year olds wearing full shields.
