what adults use intermediate sticks

Recommended Posts

I'm 6ft, 210lbs and use a 60 Flex Intermediate stick (uncut). I've been playing for only 2 years and have to deal w/ wrist issues from time to time from 25 years of drumming.

While I like 65 flex because i can cut them really short and still have great whip, I tried it and just cannot get used to the small shaft (thats why i asked if there are any senior sized shafts with 65-70 flex) even tho have small hands, I guess it comes down to preference at the end as usual.

a nice pic i found:

Last spring I bought a CCM U+10 Crazy Ovi 65 flex. I'm about 5'10" and weigh 185lbs. The stick is the perfect for quick shots and I really enjoyed not having to think about pushing down with my bottom hand to load up the shaft, although I feel like using this stick may have made my shot a little bit lazy when using a senior 85 flex stick. Nevertheless, I'm currently looking for a replacement because I enjoyed using it so much.

Edit: One thing I forgot to mention was the fact that it handles like a wet noodle when digging/fighting for the puck. I prefer something with a little less give for those gritty shifts, but if the game seems to be a wide-open, full throttle affair I'll grab the CCM U+10.

I have smaller hands (wear 13" gloves) so the dimensions of the int. shaft don't really affect me that much. Though I do prefer the feel of senior sticks.

5'6" 150

55 Flex cut 3-4 inches

I use a Diablo cut down below my chin on skates. Feels like 65 flex. Wrist shots and snaps shots are great. Slappers is about the same but my shot doesn't feel as "heavy".

Same as me. BUT, i did my math with sticks that i have and other sticks from people i play with. So for those wondering:

CCM U+ CL 85 sen. shaft dimension: 3cm x 2cm

CCM U+ CL 65 int. : 3cm x 2cm

Easton ST 65 int. (here it gets smaller) : 2.7cm x 1.9cm, but then again i measured my dolomite 85 flex and and its 2.8cm x 1.9cm, so very close and it means that a cl int. has bigger shaft dimensions than a dolomite senior

So anyone with experience with Sr. and Int. sticks notice a huge difference in durability? I'm 5'8 170 and Typically use 75/77 flex seniors cut down about 5" which is maybe 1" above the 100 flex marker. I've shot a few 67 flex Int. sticks which make shooting feel a lot easier. However, they do feel very whippy and I'd be worried if I leaned in on a shot that it would snap on me.

Not from my shot itself, but I don't think they hold up to the slashes and stick-lifts of grown men as well as Senior sticks do.

You can call me our team's grinder. I forecheck and backcheck hard and put my sticks through hell. I use an intermediate x60 and its taken snapshots, poke checks, stick lifts, etc. from adult players.

However, the stick is proportional to my size. As in I'm 5'8" 155 using an intermediate stick cut to about 78 flex. You bigger guys over 170 and over the median height for intermediate flexes, might find issues with it because it is disproportionate to your size and the amount of force you would put on it. Those are my own thoughts and by no means am I a stick flex grandmaster.

- I'm 5'3, 140lbs, stick cut down to collarbone height on skates, usually play center. -

I started playing hockey about 3 years ago. I actually started with a junior stick cause, hey, its the right size and all, great! After I got more comfortable on the ice it became apparent that the junior stick is just too small/whippy for me to do anything productive with as an adult, so I looked at intermediates...

I started with a Bauer Vapor something in 67 flex and had to cut it down 8in or so. The stick had the little flex markings for each length, and after I cut it down I was somewhere around an 85-90 by the indicator. At my size it really didn't flex much at all, so I started looking at other options.

I picked up a 70 flex Warrior Dolomite shaft at my LHS since it seemed to be a bit shorter overall even with the blade. I still had to cut a couple inches off, but I could actually use the flex, and as a result my shots were much quicker. Like night and day.

I used that shaft/blade combo for about a year, then started thinking that I'd like to try a bit lower flex, but couldn't find anything local retail. I posed on HF boards asking for some advice and someone mentioned that Warrior actually makes 55 Flex intermediates, and promptly ordered a 55 flex dolomite online from hockeymonkey. Best purchase ever. I still had to cut a few inches off since it was the same length as my 70 flex shaft was originally, but it felt great and played much better for me.

I'm currently using a 55 flex Warrior Dynasty shaft with an Easton Drury blade. I usually just take wristers, and they just fly off this stick like a rocket. It's been my primary stick for over a year and has taken a real beating. Most of the paint is missing from the lower half of the shaft from slashes and faceoffs. The shaft itself has already outlasted 2 broken blades. It'll be a sad day when it finally goes.

Eventually I'd like to get a Warrior OPS in 55 flex and Drury clone, but currently it seems the only way to make that happen is with the Warrior custom stick thing. From the new Warrior catalog it looks like they make the DT1 in exactly that, but for EU only...

Just read the post above, and then looked at the DT1...seems pretty nice. Been using a One100 intermediate (1st intermediate, I'm 5'6 and was cutting down seniors)

Not to derail - but what pattern (warrior) is closest to the P91A? Never had a warrior to date, and Scottish ice hockey shops are...lacking.

5'9, 245lbs, intermediate 60 flex DT1, cut down about an inch below my chin on skates. Loving it!

Glad to hear!

I switch between Intermediate and SR now that the Mako II came out. The stick whips like an intermediate stick. Its fantastic!

Question on warrior intermediates (customizer)

So since senior sticks due to the chara effect senior sticks are now @ 63' but its be stated multiple times that the flex rating for the stick starts/is capped at the 60' mark.

Int. sticks seem to have the same chara effect. the sticks are 60' .. my question is, do Int sticks follow the same cap/start as the Sr sticks. Meaning so does the Flex rating start/cap is at 57'?

Im 5'8-5'9 so id most likely be cutting 2-3 inches off a Int stick. Do you notice the flex to be still as whippy when its cut a couple inches or does it get stiffer?

I'm very interested to know this too. I just purchased a Widow on sale, got an Int 70 flex and cut about 2 inches off. It definitely is not as stiff as senior 75 flex sticks that I cut down the same amount, it actually feels just about perfect so far.

I think JR and Keith mentioned that the flex rating starts about 6" from the top of the stick, so that would mean at 57" for Sr sticks and 54" for Int.

I'm not overly tall (5'8"), and now I weigh in at about 175lbs, but have never tried an INT. Too small of a shaft for me and feels too whippy, at least for me.

The size of the SR shaft if prefect. I find, for me, that the SR sticks feel more durable, and the stiffer feel compared to an INT helps me. I do cut them down a couple inches. I would imagine the whippiest SR would be good for most.

What, if any, intermediates can use a senior sized butt end? The ones I've looked in the shop seem too small, but I'm not sure.
