The "2013 Fired Coaches Thread"

Recommended Posts

Probably no need for a new thread everytime the axe falls.

Tortarella is OUT in NYC! - http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=424238

Vigneault to NYR???? I could see that happening. Maybe Lindy. I don't see that as a market for a first timer...or someone with very little experience like Boucher.

I could see Boucher in Dallas (or did they hire already...???) or maybe even Vancouver...but I think NY, being the marquee job it is...will draw a more experienced person.

If Tippett doesn't renew in PHX, then I think he's the best coach available, and you know how Sather likes to get the biggest or best name available. I don't like Ruff's system, but I think he could make it work with the roster in NY.

Isn't Tippett a lateral move from Torts? Admitedly I don't follow western conference hockey close enough but its my understanding he plays the same grind it out style that Tortorella teams utilize. That said, I think it makes sense if you are just looking for a different voice in the room while not straying too far from the team's already existing identity. I wouldn't mind AV either. He was a game 7 away from being a god in British Columbia and it isn't his fault that Luongo, Henrik, and Daniel don't show up in big games. Vancouver has always had an elite PP (we don't have their personnel, but still), and that has been the Rangers achilles heel the past 2+ years.

In my opinion, It's not Torts system that got him fired, it's the manner in which he coaches it. The screaming and yelling tough guy act only works for so long.

Exactly what I was thinking.

I think Tippett coaches more to the talent he has and less to a rigid style. I think his philosophy is similar, as is that of most coaches at that level. However, I think Tippett is much more respected in the locker room. Given the way the team is built, I think that's the best chance for success of the potentially available retreads.

Great point. Him calling out Hagelin in front of the media was the tipping point for me, although I think he lost "the room" way before that.

Dallas has not hired anyone.

Top of the list seems to be AV or Dallas Eakins at this point, though Ruff did have an interview with new GM Nill recently.

One of the comments that was made in passing really stood out to me. They were not planning on firing Torts until the post season meeting with Sather. Evidently, something happened between them in that meeting that resulted in the firing. I would have loved to hear a recording of that one.

Talk of Mark Messier/ Brian Leetch/ Adam Graves as the next staff. Seems like a long shot, but I think it would work.

"With all the money I spent, you're putting Richards back on the top line."

"He sucks now."

"Get out."

Reeks of Gretzky to Phoenix, previous affiliations to the organization aside. The Rangers need to get rid of the "old boys club" mentality and bring in a new perspective, which is why I'm hoping Eakins is being strongly considered. He seems to have a great track record developing young forwards as well, which would hopefully be a breath of fresh air for the likes of Kreider and Miller.

Messier wants to be the GM, not the coach.

Gotcha, I did not realize that.

Touche.

I am so hoping that Slats buys out Richards. $24 mil over 12 years, no salary cap hit implications.

And then he goes to Chicago to center the second line for $2-$3M

I don't imagine Richards is going to go back to another market like that.

If he gets bought out, he will probably go somewhere where he can rebuild his image. That will probably mean a relatively low $ contract for a year or two in a place where he can succeed. I don't think the Hawks will have that kind of cash leftover, but I would love to see him with Hossa and Saad or Kane and Sharp.

Other teams he could go to that have fair talent and need a 2nd-line C, off the top of my head, Anaheim or Washington. Not sure if he'd want to go to Washington since they have horrible postseason success and he doesn't need anymore of that.

You know it's bad when Mike Keenan would be considered a players coach by comparison

I could see Richards returning to the Sunshine state with either the Lightning or Panthers. Both low pressure situations that could be poised for moderate success next season.

I suspect that Richards will disappear into the "Who's Who" of guys past their prime who are just hanging around. Which is fine, he can still provide leadership and some stability somewhere; the Rangers just do not need to pay $10 mil/year for this. In his defense, I do think he is a pretty good defensive center, I just think he freezes up when he gets the puck at the point on the power play, and is pretty well invisible on 5v5 offense/attack. S, keep him off the power play, and have him center a line with 2 high scorers who play Zero defense, would seem to be the solution.

If he goes to CHI (and centers either Sharp/Kane or Saad/Hossa), then he will be relevant, and may actually produce. But if he goes to Fla. or TB, then I predict 10 goals and 25 assists. I suppose it all depends on whose line he is on. If he plays with Stamkos then he will likely tally around 60 points.

I'm sorry for continuing this off topic, but you realize Richards managed to put up nearly those exact numbers than that in the shortened season, right? He's not a BAD hockey player, he's just not the player he used to be.
