Are skate blade holders rated for maximum weight?

Recommended Posts

Just curious if skate blade holders are rated for maximum weight. If anyone knows the answer (and weight rating of respective holders if the answer is yes) I would be interested in knowing.

Thanks in advance.

I'm sure there is a maximum that any skate holder can handle, but given that some NHLers tip the scales are as much as 240, I wouldn't think it should be a worry for regular players. If you're over 250 it can't be too easy to play hockey.

Okay, I weigh 290lbs without my gear on. I've got a body seemingly meant for football instead of hockey. While it's not easy to play hockey (anything worthwhile doing is never easy) I can play and I use my size to my advantage while playing defence and on the PP.

i had a guy who was pushing 300 and he would roll over a prolite and a tuuk. I ended up putting him in a cobra holder on his 1052's. it was an odd combo. He skated very well for a big guy.

theres a kid on my team who just turned 16, and is 6'2" and 260lbs. he's using the ferland 900's skates i believe, with the cobra holders (the ones without the screws in the back). and they've been supporting him pretty good. its his second year on them

Just curious, what flex do you use on your shafts/sticks?

I've got quite a few customers over 275lbs and none I'm aware have had trouble with the holder failing from weight. However, the weight does loosen up the rivets holding them in quite often. All that torque does it, especially if the rivet is rusted at all inside the boot. I have one "big" guy 350lbs, and I redo his rivets about once a year. His holders hold up just fine.

BTW, most holders failures are due to loose rivets, not the holder themselves. They are pretty durable. Loose rivets also can lead to blade failure, if there is a lot of play in the holder.

I use Tapered M-2 shafts with a flex of 105.

I played with an offensive lineman from the Toronto Argonauts a few times, 6'4" 316lbs according to their roster, and he could skate just fine. He wouldn't take slap shots because it was hard on the sticks, and not many guys could ride him into the boards. He pretty much went where he wanted to. Big guys can play, that's for sure. He could also make space for himself on the bench pretty quick.
