NHL SEASON IS OVER!

Recommended Posts

You heard it here first...at 1pm today (about 1/2 hour) the NHL will announce that the season will not start this year...

My source: inside the NHL...

A sad day for hockey... :(

I've heard that a "last minute" (as in after the 11am deadline) was pushed through to the NHL from the PA. The optimist in me so wants to see it come through, but whether it's true or not I have no idea.

I know the memos went out saying that the season was done, but this was done before the emergency offer, supposedly.

We'll see in 20 minutes I guess... what a cludge

:P "brilliant"...

I am waiting for the union to say they offered a last minute deal which would have met with the NHL's approval, but that Bettman would not entertain it due to the fact it was past the deadline, and thus make Bettman look like the villain.

So many guys are probably going to retire due to this without being able to play a "last game". Guys like Yzerman, Francis, Messier, Chelios.

Its done... for the record Damien Cox called this last year

90% of the hockey world predicted this.

I'm shocked and pissed off unbelievably. Bettman created the problem, Bettman's people allowed the player salaries to get out of control and now Bettman has refused a deal which was what he wanted.

No, this is no one's fault. Its just time to fix it and its hard to take away something that the players had. This just really really bites.

I am wondering where a bunch of farm boys and the like are gonna find another job for at least 300k a year.

That would have been hilarious. Personally I don't care because I hated payin' $50 to sit in the upper section to watch a Devils game. As long as I ain't locked out of hockey rinks, I don't give a flyin' fak.

The NHL has for a number of years attempted to get the PA to acknowledge the pending doom...but if you're in the PA and riding the golden goose why believe it??

I think Goodenow is out..and Linden, Esche and some others will try to get a deal done in the coming months, not til April-june though so that the NHL can't get its impasse and implement its own system for the '05-06 season

I'm still waiting for Goodenow to come in, stand next to Bettman, hug, and be like "MAN, WE WAS JUST BULLSHITTIN'! We had an agreement 5 months ago..."

LOL, that's sorely needed comic relief for this whole thing.

Bettman got what he wanted. There was a cap, the players salaries were SEVERLY reduced. If the owners aren't able to reach the peak cap, they do not have to, and there is a maximum the top spendng teams can get. They cut 20 million dollars of salary off of the top team.

I personally believe, although some disagree, he is responsible for this.

I also believe this wasn't about the money, or even personal debates, he pushed back the date so far a season would be impossible to ice, and he has just rejected the offer because he could not come through on his promise of a deal.

For NHL to come and say, were taking your job, cutting your income by 24%, not allowing you to keep all of your roster and forcing you to differen't teams you may not want to go to is wrong in my opinion.

I think this the start of a lot of sports "resetting" Everybody but the players lose money in sports, The networks even lose money in football rights. NBA players are saying they got screwed the last cba. Football players are going to want money from all revenes (parking etc.) Baseball is just a joke now. I don't think this will be the last. It just cost to much money to see a game, buy team stuff, every thing that has to do with sports is just crazy.

I haven't really been following the lockout, but then I don't really care. if both sides are willing to lose millions of dollars by canceling the season, then I hope they go bankrupt.

Two words: Competitive balance.
