Does the height of a stick affect your shot (i.e. slap shot)? Ive been using a bit smaller stick than usual and have noticed my shot speed decrease noticably, but the lie is perfect.

It happened to me when I cut down all of my sticks 1-1.5", but not too noticeably. I guess I was never really an amazing shooter to begin with, and now I stickhandle MUCH better, so I think it was worth it. I believe that the shot power decrease can be credited to a stiffer flex, and that you arent used to needing to put as much effort into your shot to get it to flex as much. I'm sure after time you will know you have to put more effort into shots, and they'll become just as good, if not better, than before.

I agree with Kovy on this one, You can protect the puck better with a shorter stick, you can apply more strength since its a shorter distance to apply energy to, and I think your range of motion on a shot is quicker since there's less distance to cover on your swing.

I like the fact I can change the angle on a goalie much more with a long stick. It's pretty useful down low putting in garbage goals.

A longer piece of lumber will help you jack the puck in easier down low.

my stick goes up to my mouth for two reasons

1) maybe make the stick have a longer life if i grow

2) I have always used the stick at the mouth, never chin, i dont like short sticks, or long sticks, at the mouth is perfect for me

Mine goes just below my chin with my skates on. I used to use a much longer stick, but I fould stick-handling much easier once I took an inch and a half or so off

on skates my stick comes up to my nose. I am only 5'6 and i like a lot of flex in my stick, but like senior sticks better, so i try to cut down my stick as little as possible. I also like the added reach.

russians were mentioned earlier as having short sticks in general. i believe this comes from the russians mostly using lower lies. i read an article on lies somewhere that said the russians all used 5's when the majority of north america used 6's - way back in maybe the 60's. as time went on both sides absorbed the traditions of the other. i think it holds true that most russians prefer lower lies. bure, mogilny, fed, all used 5's or lower. i think it helps with the way they get lower to the ice and bend their knes better than NA's. the prototypical russian player wasnt that big, but with huge tree trunk legs that kept him closer to the ice. lower lies also help you protect the back elbow a bit from hooks.

Lower lies generally mean longer sticks.

pretty much, I'd say on skates it's about mid-pec

I have these gorilla arms though so I'm pretty effective with a pokecheck. I also setup the pokecheck by cocking my elbow making my arm and stick look smaller, it tends to help forwards play to me more.

not always, holmstrom is notorious for scoring garbage goals in fron of the net and he apparantly uses the shortest stick for his size in the NHL. id think shorter would help you scoop the puck up easier. I think in almost any situation no matter what type of player you are it all comes back to personal preference
