learning hockey at an advanced age
MyBoxersSayJoe replied to Amazinmets73's topic in General Hockey Discussions
You're doing a great job of keeping your knees bent! You're not bobbing much and you're staying pretty level. It makes all the difference. As you get more comfortable, you'll be able to drive the inside leg and extend it rather than just step over. Maybe try slow, purposeful strides once you find your balance. The first video, you seemed to be relying pretty heavily on the stick to balance you, the second video you weren't using it as as much of an aid. Oh, I'll actually be playing in a tournament down at that rink from 3/18-3/20! -

Looking much better. However, as others have commented, keep that front foot planted. The back heel may lift as your weight transfers and your follow through. Keep the knees bent, drive the momentum forward, less twisting. Make sure you're pointing the toe of the stick on the follow through where you want the puck to go. -

In the first video, I think you're kind of slicing it a bit too much. Like you're catching it mid-toe instead of heel-mid and not turning your wrists over to point the puck in the direction you want it to go. It got a little better with the regular pucks toward the end. Also, you're transferring your weight to the back leg then twisting instead of transferring from the back leg to the front leg. Think of it like putting all your weight on the bag leg and driving all that momentum through to the front leg and pointing the toe of the blade where you want it to go as you follow through. I was doing the basics of shooting with my JV kids the other day, most would transfer the weight back, but not forward or they wouldn't follow through with the stick. I'm definitely jealous of the amount of ice time you're getting to work on the basics of hockey. There's so much I wish I could work on. Keep up the great work! -

2. Full stands on the side opposite the benches.

Some video from wearing a GoPro on my helmet during a scrimmage. Unfortunately, it got batted off my head at the end.

The only thing I can really comment on is the amount of hip swaying, but it could just be me. Use that energy to drive through your legs. Otherwise, looks like you're doing great. Knees bent, chest up, you're in good shape. -

As a New Jersey native, may God have mercy on your soul. On the other hand, you have a rink right there if you can bring your equipment with you. Flyers Skate Zone http://ac.flyersskatezone.com/ -
2014 True Hockey catalogue
MyBoxersSayJoe replied to JR Boucicaut's topic in 2014 Product Catalogue Reviews
Got to check out a 5.2 tonight and I'm very impressed with the weight and balance. Thinking about picking either that or a 6.0 up when it's available. I switched from the Bauer P88 to P14 last year and I'm leaning towards an MC curve. -
Hah! That's great! Nice tip.

2013 Graf Catalogue
MyBoxersSayJoe replied to JR Boucicaut's topic in 2013 Product Catalogue Reviews
Are the Ultra G75 Lite sticks out in X-Whip (65) flex? I haven't seen them at any retailers yet. -
That's a great looking skate. Love the all-black Graf design with the bright green graf logo. Wish all skates ran a simpler design.
-
Hah, I played in that tourny. I wish they'd do another one.
-
Tell me about it. I think he's the one that used to do all the music and sound effects. I kind of miss them haha.
-
Ice House? I recognize the scorekeeper lol. Which team?
-
Tried them on last week, comfy glove.
-
Amen! I kept mine pretty simple, didn't go for all sorts of bells and whistles. 6-3/4 EA on left and 6-5/8 EA on the right with 1/8" stretch on the toecap. 4 stiffness?! Wow! I stuck with the standard 2 and find them just right. How'd the "comfort edge" come out for you? I've noticed a few pics of customs that look different than retail. Mine included. Yes, they're built in Canada. I love them more and more every time I skate in them.
-
Thanks! They started custom orders for APX's June 1st, they came in on the 28th but the ship date was originally for a little later than that. My order was put in in mid-May. A lot of it all depends on where you are in the queue. Good luck, I'm sure you'll love them!

Custom APX's came in. Finally took pics.
-
Agreed. Only reason I'll be going down in size in the APX's is because my X60's are too big for me.
-
Awesome, epstud! I spend my Sunday afternoons teaching kids ages 3-7 to learn how to ice skate and play hockey.
-
For me, I just like plain black skates. Nothing flashy or fancy. I would probably do the same.
-
HNA? I coach at my former high school, so I'd most likely take pics at that. I was going to try to make a Rutgers game this year to see one of our players that graduated last year play, but he transferred out. I try to keep up with what our alumni are up to in the hockey world.
-
Is that the D1 or D2 team? Nice shots! I'd like to take pics, but I'm usually too busy keeping stats for our varsity team and there are a few parents who snap some really great shots.

Thanks. Feel free to PM me if you have any more questions, so there's not off-topic convo going on in here. But in short: Nikon D90 and 50mm f/1.4 lens.
