  1. Sounds pretty normal to me. Anyone sprinting for 30s would probably describe a similar feeling. Why it has potentially become more noticeable now is that your body (and muscles) is changing through puberty, transitioning from being more endurance capable to, in your case, more explosive. Now's probably a good time to get a good understanding of how resistance training can help your body adapt to the demands of the sport. Once this growth spurt goes past and once your conditioning improves, and your body builds up the capacity to cope with the demands of the sport, you should notice this less.
  2. Sport Science grad/DPT here. From your subjective assessment, it could be many things. Firstly, lactate (not lactic acid, which technically doesn't exist) is not the bad guy in energy metabolism, though other waste metabolites can reduce performance. What helped you determine that 'lactic acid' was causing tightness in your hamstrings? Secondly, you speak of tightness. Can you describe it? Is it the tightness associated with cramping? Or a tightness like a muscle pump after working out? Or a tightness having done a max sprint without warming up? More information is needed for a better understanding of what's going on here. Thirdly, you speak of your team working out twice a week, and you going an extra 2-3 more times. Are you talking about gym sessions or ice sessions? How many times were you going beforehand when you didn't have the tightness issue? The change in how you feel could potentially be a symptom of overtraining. Fourthly, you're 16. This is an age where your body goes through a growth spurt. Muscles grow at a different rate to bone, and you could just be experiencing fatigue stemming from a changing body and power-to-weight ratio. But, again, much more information is needed here. Can you describe more fully what you are experiencing?
  3. Middle blade for the first picc, and right blade on the bottom?
  4. That's something I used to do as well, fidgeting with my laces all the time. Laces come loose in a game and I'd always have to re-tie them. My solution was to learn to skate with one eyelet off. Yes, it took awhile, and it was worth it. It's really just getting your calves to control your ankle flexion - this will be hard at first as we're used to letting our boot physically dictate how much ankle flexion we get. Another benefit with having more range is the expanded degree to which you can manipulate your edges. McDavid skates without the top eyelet done and he's got such ability to work those edges like no one else.
  5. How people tie their skate comes down to quite a few factors, I'm thinking. Skating style is one highly relevant one - I'm going to say for a skater like Eichel who uses a push back, toe flick stride, he doesn't need quite the same degree of ankle flexion as compared to a push to the side, mid-foot push stride like McDavid's. Another relevant factor to me is femur length - a long femur requires more ankle flexion for the same amount of depth in a squat, which would be similar to skating. That might require dropping one eyelet to gain the flexion needed. What else are you guys thinking could be a factor?
  6. I'd go see a physiotherapist - they're the ones trained to diagnose and manage musculoskeletal issues. Clearing the x-ray means no avulsion injury (tendon/ligament did not rip off its attachment to the bone) - it does not clear a ligamentous or tendinous tear. An MRI may be indicated if the subjective or physical examination points towards a tear. Ultrasounds aren't very reliable so we don't use them a lot here - and similar to the MRI, it has to be indicated for it to be ordered. With a full ACL rupture, you'd feel the pop on the inside of the knee and would be unable to skate on it after, so if anything it likely wouldn't be a full tear of that, at least. A meniscus tear could cause instability because its job is to provide stability. Clicking and catching is what might be expected from a meniscal tear. There isn't close to enough information given here to direct any kind of advice, actually. Something is definitely torn (any kind of sprain or strain is a tear, just to what degree) or there wouldn't have been oedema. See a physiotherapist is my recommendation.
  7. Got accepted into my school and course of choice. Even got offered a (partial) scholarship, but that goes a long way towards helping me finance this Master's. Going to be starting a whole new chapter of my life come January!
  8. Hey guys, does anyone know of someone with a Spare sharpener in Melbourne?
  9. I have 2 used pairs of 3.5D, but I'm in Singapore. It won't be worth shipping it over there - maybe you know someone going over?
  10. Where do I find more information about this discount code? My items don't seem to work with this.
  11. Apparently, Step Blacksteel (which I wanted) is sold out so I wouldn't be able to get it from them. Also, this shop is pushing Tydan quite strongly, so that's probably why they quoted me for Tydan.
  12. I got this quote for prices from a Canadian shop: here are the costs (all are CDN funds) True player skate with stock blades $999.99 True one piece goal skate $999.99 True 2 piece goal skate $899.99 True player skate with Tuuk lightspeed edge holders and LS3 steel $1049.99 LS4 steel $1069.99 Tydan stainless steel $1069.99 (add $25 for engraving) Tydan black steel $1099.99 (add $25 for engraving) color on eyelet row +$40 extra side protection +$50 tongue embroidery $40 -all above pricing is +shipping($125) and taxes(12%). payment is at time order is confirmed and placed.
  13. Hey guys, does anyone have any insights about the Tydan Blacksteel vs the STEP Blacksteel? A shop has told me that STEP has run out of Blacksteel and will not be available for the next 6-8 weeks and is asking me to consider Tydan Blacksteel instead. Thanks, Mark
  14. For game day nutrition, these guys pretty much have it down. Hydration leading up to game time is important, and consume a carb-laden meal 2-4hrs before. I will say this though - energy drinks will work for sporting activity lasting >1h. Even then, you don't want to drink everything, or you'll feel too full. In sports science, this is what we do for our teams: one bottle of water and one bottle of energy drink for each athlete per game. Water to be drunk throughout the game in sips, energy drink to be swished in the mouth and spat out. According to some research, just tasting the energy drink is enough to trick the brain into thinking it is consuming carbs and make the body feel more energetic. I can't comment about tactics, but short shifts go a long way. Gas yourself out in the first period and you'll suffer the next two.
  15. Have you guys got any dealer to recommend?
  16. Mate, that would be great if the rep would be able to come here. A couple of the guys in the leagues here already wear the older VH skates, and there's always been a buzz about the skates. I'd appreciate your help on this. Is that so? I don't see an option to order online, other than through various retailers. Would I have to go through them?
  17. Hi guys, does anyone know where I can get replacement tongues for the original VH skates? Mine are broken down beyond belief. Also, where can I get TRUE skates done if I don't have access to a shop to do the scan? I live in SE Asia. Thanks, Mark
  18. Sorry for the late reply - I set my notifications to ring when there was a reply, but it doesn't seem to have informed me. How do you mean? I lace them up normally, outside in lacing. When I put my foot into the skate, I can already feel the ankle pads pressing.
  19. Can anyone help me out with an issue - my Alkali RPD Team skates have been giving me problems. The ankle pads are so pronounced that it cuts off blood flow to my foot when I wear them. I can't skate for more than 15mins before my little toe goes numb. What can I do about this?
  20. I'd also like to know about the pitch difference. I am on the Easton Mako with Tuuk Edge holders and a 3mm lift. Wondering if I would need a 3mm lift as well when transitioning to the Super Tacks, although it seems like the Super Tacks boot is slightly shorter and canted forward compared to the Mako.
  21. Thanks man, I'll look up the store and drop them an email.
  22. Thanks bud! Did you skate on the stock CXN stuff, and if you did, you say it is similar? I did too; searching on a phone probably isn't the best choice, I think. I wonder if this is a good idea - a summary of important, poignant points on the first page of each thread. Sounds like a lot of work, but if it could be edited by anyone, I think each member would chip in. Sometimes, searching is not easy, especially if you're not really sure what to type in as keywords. EDIT: Oh, anyone knows if Total Hockey can replace holders and add shims? Got a friend travelling to the one in Chesterfield, MO, when he flies to the States in May, and he'll bring my skates to pass to them.
  23. Thanks for asking this, I was just about to ask the same thing. I'm going to swap the CXN out of my Makos and put the Edge holders on; the steel in my size is so difficult to find, and anyway, if the Makos are discontinued, it'll just become harder and harder. While we're on the topic, does anyone know what height of shims I need to put between the rear tower of the Edge holder and the boot to make the stock pitch of the CXN holder and steel? If I recall correctly, the holder pitch is the same for the Lightspeed Edge and the CXN, but not the steel, therefore I want to compensate by adding a shim. I don't want to radius the steel in the Edge holder to match the Easton one, because I don't live anywhere near someone who radiuses blades - I live in Aisa. Thanks for the info. Honestly, I'm not very good at digging up information with the search function, so it would have taken me ages to dig through the thread.
  24. How much does one of these cost?
  25. I took to my Mako II's with a heat gun, put on some gloves so that I didn't burn my fingerprints off, then pinched the area right under the removable tendon guard, which is also just about the ankle bones. Definitely worked. Didn't help though when I tried to do the same around the navicular bone.
