  1. As of last night, yeah, they cancelled all youth programs, not shut down the rink. Had to reread the e-mail. Could be the motivation was misguided or even noble, just going off the scuttlebutt around the rink and the crazy stick times that were added.
  2. The main rink just closed. I think he was trying to squeeze money out of the situation because hours before they sent out an email with tons of stick times every day. Insurance or lawyers probably corrected that...
  3. Pretty much the pinnacle of the sweet spot! Congratulations, she’s beautiful!
  4. Rinks that we do stuff in still open. As of now we have practice tonight. The schools all just called it, can't imagine hockey won't be next, it is the last thing we are involved with that hasn't.
  5. That sucks, thought it might be a new version of Peranis buying older gear. Got suspicious when everything I looked at had every size/config/color listed like it was in stock.
  6. The article is only about the football testing. Here is their what i assume initial publication, which talks about how they specifically test hockey helmets. Again, lots can be debated, but assertions and critiques must be factually correct. https://kstp.com/kstpImages/repository/cs/files/ABME 2015 Hocky STAR Rowson Rowson Duma.pdf
  7. So, when they describe how they added rotational components to their protocol and explain their methodology, they are lying? We can argue about whether there are better methods, but at least be factually correct because from what I read in their protocol, there are 4 impact locations, delivered at 3 different energy levels, and they measure both linear and rotational acceleration. What am I missing?
  8. That is cool, I remember painting layer after layer of ProtecToe on new skates though.
  9. Ugg, my only chance to get to Pure for sharpening today...45 minutes to do my son’s skates. Didnt have the time to wait. Will have to chance it that the rink sharpener is open before his game tomorrow and that someone competent is manning the machine!! going to be a long wait before I get a Sparx...
  10. Could be. But maybe they did test it in gameplay.
  11. You could. But it would serve the same purpose as a gap, it allows them to move independently. I would assume a simple gap/cutout is cheaper. It certainly is more recognizable.
  12. I understand it is all connected, but for the bottom to flex while connected to two endpoints, there has to be the gap or cutout. So yeah, not rocket science. And being an engineer, no matter who you work for, doesn’t mean your word is law when evaluating a description or picture of a design. Anybody who has spent any time doing npd knows that it is par for the course to hypothesize, prototype, and test and that often you are proven wrong, which is the point.
  13. I get article not found. Yes, you could make a rigid upper and softer lower, but if there wasn't any separation the bottom section wouldn't "slingshot" independently.
  14. So just thinking, if you would realize the maximal effect of the slingshot the puck would need to be released from the middle of the blade, centered within the cutout. Reganblink mentioned testing a P28, I wonder what the difference is between that and say an 88 curve. What would really be awesome would be some super slow motion video of this stick shooting with various curves.
  15. Maybe, I would think CCM would be a little more low-key.
  16. Or maybe said predecessors just did a shitty job implementing the idea and Bauer in fact did learn from them...
  17. Yeah, here are only a couple places/people who do skates well even in Pittsburgh. One is near a rink 30 mins away that we never go to and you need an appt. The other is a specific guy at the rink who is rarely there, and the last i over an hour away. Go to Pure and some guy asks what hollow you want, skates get lined up with 10 other pair with no way to know what skates get which hollow, and two kids manning a machine each do your skates while BSing the whole time. Convenience is by far the #1 motivator. I would love to get a traditional machine just because cause I would enjoy learning to do it but without someone to mentor I don't know if that makes sense.
  18. Yeah, I have watched that before, just wondering if anyone had some long term personal use. I will watch it again, it has been a while, even though I tend to take official review channels with a grain of salt. The weight to me is interesting. In woodworking, things like table saws, jointers, and planers are heavy. The higher end ones are even heavier. The weight gives stability as it reduces vibration and increases accuracy. So the weight of the Sparx to me is a plus.
  19. OK, back on topic. I am following this thread because I will very likely be buying a machine before next season. I wanted to make sure my son was going to keep playing but now he is and we have 5 cousins and some neighbors that will probably make use of it so beyond the convenience which is the primary driver, the economics look ok too. My question is, at this point, has anybody spent significant time with both the Sparx AND the ProSharp Home? One strike against the PS was that you only got a single pass per button press. That may not be a dealbreaker but now their website says programmable up to 5 passes. The price difference is another thing, but it looks like you also get three rings with the PS now, although that still doesn’t even out. So just looking for actual head to head experiences.
  20. I am pretty sure you can try one more way, two more ways, draw it out in crayon, show a mathematical proof, write a rap song explaining it, have the entire cast of The Muppets demonstrate it in a skit, or hire a plane to tow a banner with “320 Cycles!” written in 10 foot letters over his house for days on end and it wouldn’t sink in. Some people just get joy out of beating dead horses with broken records....
