So after the rebake I did the other day I was able to test the skates out at stick and puck. I actually switched back to the car pro tongues bc the felt tongues actually caused some rubbing on the outside of my ankle bc it was so tight against the cuff. I could've opened up the cuff with a heat gun but decided to try the pro tongues again to see how those felt l and to my surprise it felt very good. I was on the ice for an hour straight with no break and the cuff area that was bothering me before was 95% resolved.  I felt it but it didn't hurt.  I actually think the only reason I kind of felt it this time was because the area is still a bit sensitive from my game on Sunday.  So needless to say I'm pretty happy overall.  I have another game on Sunday and we will see how it feels then. If anything I might need to flare the inside of the cuff 1/16" to perfect it but I'm just glad it's not causing me any pain anymore.

I'm pretty sold on the genetix insoles as the speedplates feel odd in this skates, probably because I would need to rebake the entire skate with the speed plates for it to feel better and I'm not doing a rebake lol. Genetix provides good support but like I said earlier, it's just a touch on the thick side but I'll just deal with it.

Still debating on whether to put an extension on my sticks bc of the taller holders and steel.

Overall the skates feel great and how I expected them to feel from the get to. Took a little bit of tinkering but I also had to do this with my tf customs. They do feel very similar except for the noticeable flex of the cat boots.

Anyways. Unless something else crazy pops up with these I won't bore you guys anymore with my skates.

That flex makes me really want a pair of Catalysts. Plus the yellow/black/silver matches our club's uniforms perfectly.

Did this ever resolve itself completely? I'm having this issue with my cat pros and never had this on my tf customs. Might be because the new baking instructions is only 6 mins vs 10 mins for tf customs and the skates never got as pliable. How long did you bake yours for?

Going to try a full rebake for 8-10 mins and see if that helps.

I skate without the top eyelet done and it seems worse with this vs lacing up all the way to the top but I don't like the loss of ankle flexion with the latter.  I even flared the top cuff on the medial side but it didn't really do too much. Maybe I need to flare the outside cuff too.

If the only issue is the top outside eyelet, why not spot heat that area with a heat gun to work it out of the way. That way you can fully focus on the problem area and leave what’s good alone.

The trend towards smaller toecaps is a good thing. I like them too. I was referring to the specific dimensions that you want out of a toecap along with not liking the option or power foot inserts.

The tf retails will be replaced by the hzrdus skate which will also have the "carv" toecap the catalyst has. The hzdus looks hideous imo. True dropped the ball on the design especially after a big improvement on the catalyst in the looks department

Even the Catalyst line got a lot of hate.

I'm one of those guys who likes to skate with the top eyelet un-used as well as flopping my tongue.  However, I feel like I would benefit with just a touch more of the very upper part of my skate being pulled in closer ( ie if i were to use the top eyelet ).....but even when I use the top eyelet and do it loose, I don't like the restricted feel of it.  Would putting some tape around the top of the skate help pull in the upper sides and give me the ankle movement I like.  Seems like it might......

It’s something you could easily test out. Give it a shot and let us know.

Well, if the stuffing route works(ish), I'm still willing to try them out. If it doesn't, then I guess that's the end of the journey. Doesn't sound like I'll even have to bake them to get my answer.

How wide are we really talking here for the toe box? Clown feet wide?

To be clear, my concern is in the width, not height.

Ah. Gotcha. I was indeed focused on height, in the line of the Powerfoot solution.

The trend in skates is toward smaller toe boxes. CCM and Bauer have figured it out, and the new Catalyst is a de facto admission by True of the same. So, it seems that I'm probably in the majority.

Are True not the skates for "particular" people? We have a 50 page thread about using plastic wrap, clamps, foams and the like just to get a proper skate fit...

That Catalyst and TF9 are for different strides. It seems that whatever the successor to the TF9 is will probably be right in my wheelhouse.

The replacement for the TF looks like it has a sleeker toe cap. I’m not sure about toe cap width after the TF because I haven’t been able to try on Catalysts yet.

I vaguely remember the TF toe being pretty wide, but it’s been quite a while since I tried them on.

The Mach skate is fine for me. I'm just looking to see if there isn't something better.

If the Trues are designed for people who desire large-ish toe boxes, then yes I will probably send them back. I said as much in a prior post.

Bauer and CCM both have sufficiently sized toe boxes that I don't require foam inserts to skate properly in. It sounds like True are bigger than both.

In one of his videos, SVH said the skate last was designed from "tens of thousands of scans" and between regular and wide, would fit 85-90% of skaters. Given the thermoformability that everyone speaks of, I guess it was a huge oversight to create what sounds like a very spacious toe box.

I will know in a couple days when they are delivered.

My view on the tall toe box was they wanted the players to have the option of a roomy cap or repositioning the tongue down inside the cap to make it snug. Since they’ve gone to shallower toe caps in everything after TF, it seems the optional stuffing route didn’t work out the way they were planning.

Admittedly I don’t stare at NHL players ankles much (I’m a butt man), but pretty surprised that he tapes his ankles. Or that anyone in the NHL tapes their ankles.

Pasta’s got little to no ankle involved in his skating, so it’s not a huge surprise. Krejci too. Krejci actually tapes the tendon guard though, along with a handful of players that still do: Coyle, Panarin, Perron, Rasmus Andersson, Pacioretty, and Barbashev.

Coyle only started doing it in the last few years, maybe after he started playing for the Bruins.

Pacioretty started a couple of years in. I wonder if his brother-in-law, Maxim Afinogenov, got him into it, but that’a pure speculation.

UPDATE: Happy New Year to me. I just ordered them. Is this the greatest skate ever made? Or is it all hype.

There’s ample room between those two extremes. As you’ve correctly pointed out, it’s very individual where the skate ends up on that spectrum.

You can't compare a true skate to an old Bauer skate. Heck you can't even compare hyperlites to machs. They all fit differently.

You can and you actually have to. Otherwise it would be impossible to get a sense of how thermoformability and boot body assembly affect feel and performance for instance. At the end of the day they’re all hockey skates. They’re all comparable to one another. Some comparisons result in a greater degree on contrast, but that’s all an effect of comparison.

Those battery powered heated skate blades that were super heavy and had dubious science behind them.

Roller hockey, but those Mission skates that didn’t have traditional grommets and had hiking boot style quick tightening nylon pull throughs (there’s gotta be a name those that I’m blanking on). It was like Mission had a cool idea and did no longer term stress testing and everyone’s “eyelets” ripped out in three months.

Nike Quest 1s featured similar nylon loops instead of eyelets over the forefoot. They cleverly covered the loops with pleather facing to prevent them from get sliced by skate blades.

Some good ones in here, I forgot about those ninja turtle gloves.

I have the traditionally 4-fingered (+thumb) Mission Warp 2s from that era in my basement. The break pattern on the backhand and fingers was way ahead of its time, but a lot of small details were poorly executed or mistaken in their premises. Biggest issue is the thumb-index junction is too shallow, forcing the index finger into an awkward position. Otherwise, the feel is almost as natural as AK27 gloves…maybe no wonder because Kovalev experimented with Mission gloves of that vintage.

What's the allure of the 4500?

It’s insanely comfy. I just got one after way too long with a Bauer HH5000 that was just a terrible fit anyway.

I tried on newer helmets before settling on the 4500 and they all felt all plastic-like inside, without the soft grip of the 4500, sliding around and whatnot.

4500’s a classic that just works. Like the tapered MacBook Air or iPhone < 4 body.

At the beginning of the pandemic I bought 5 Torrey Mitchell easton synergy HTX iginla curve clones. On Tuesday I broke my last one, so I currently have 2 old Sherwood pp ig12 and other various other beat up iginla clones. I’m looking for some help finding something that is right handed. I know pro stock hockey has the tmp code team in the pp12 but the conversion and shipping to Canada isn’t ideal. Has any iginla user tried the mcdavid pro from pro stock sticks? Does anyone have any leads on other sticks?

Just from looking at the differences, McDavid pro is a modified Iginla Jr., so you'd be adjusting to two sets of alterations: down in blade length, heel height, and lie to the Iginla Jr, as well as McDavid's added curve and loft. It's related to Iginla, but it's a wild child compared to the rather mild Iginla Sr.

I only have used the felt and will continue. Anything with plastic in it isn't comfortable to me at all

A stiff tongue feels as wrong for my skating as using an extremely stiff stick does for my shooting. It literally holds me back, keeping me from getting my ankle flexed enough, affecting pivoting and starting strokes the most. I tend to use the softest tongue I have, with really thin felt and amazing flex.

Was very excited to ordered a pair of the Catayst Pros (after successes with other clients) and sadly was seriously disappointed in the fit.  Now, I will confess, that I did not inquire as to how "custom" they could do these, thus, when I requested an oversized holder, I had no idea they would automatically upsize the boot and "try" to downsize by packing the toe. They fit like a open toe sandal...Beware.  I can definitely say on the positive side that the quality and build are amazing and eventhough I was immediately going to swap the holder and blade out...finish and alignment was perfect.  This custom program is a fantastic deal for those looking for a semi custom at a remarkable price...just make sure to know the limitations of what can be done...PS sadly have to send them back.

You requested an oversized holder even though you were going to switch the holder out anyway?

Most kids today aspire to be a ‘youtuber’! Not a lawyer, doctor, engineer, etc. Just a pretty much worthless influencer. Given the potential opportunity for money I get it, but it’s a sad state for our future

    https://thesmallbusinessblog.net/why-do-children-want-to-become-youtubers-when-they-grow-up/#Key_Stats

I get where you’re coming from, but in a financial sense, influencers already generate a lot of value and it looks to some in the industry that they’re the next frontier of value creation:

@Jbear maybe the Hockey Supremacy sponsorship is just nepotism. That would be my first guess.

Anyone notice Bauer's new fit system feel noticeably different than what they use to have?  Ie. Fit 2 in a Vapor now feels significantly more voluminous than an old regular D Supreme (ie 1S).

Even a Fit 2 in Supreme feels a bit bigger than the old D size Supremes.

And I've notice the second level skate (ie M5 Pro or 3X Pros) in a specific fit (ie Fit 1) feels different and more roomier than the top tier skates in the same fit (ie Machs or Hyperlites).  I would figure it should fit the same but maybe the slightly lower quality of the second tier boot doesn't quite fit as well.

I know the new fit system is supposed to accommodate more people to try the two lines (Vapor/Supreme) but it's tougher to find a good fit for me now ironically.  Nothing really feels like the old Supreme Ds anymore.

Bauer tried to market the new 3 fits both ways: as an improved mapping of the fit options to their foot-scan dataset and as a continuation of the fits you used to know in case you loved them. Some people have had a hard time adjusting.

One guess about perceived volume differences between skates at different price points is foam thickness. Maybe the top end boots have thicker foam, making the boots feel less voluminous than their cheaper siblings.
