Word in Denver it came down to wanting to keep Tanguay and Hejduk. Its VERY painful now but in the long run its a smart move. Tanguay can play center AND there are plenty other free agents to fill in a few wing spots.

Not a bad move, Turgeon is a solid center. Although, I think I would rather have seen my team the Avs cut Blake and then use that money to keep Forsberg. They probably could have kept Foote and picked up a couple of other defensemen. There were plenty of affordable defensemen available this time.

Hrm. JR's booked for what, 4.9 million? I thought Desjardans was higher, but I still can see Clarke being much more likely to unload a Dman (or two) after signing two guys who are bonafide number one defenseman on any team in the league in Hatcher and Rathje, and another damn good one in Therian.

Both of those guys as potential number one d-men? Therian "damn good", you are certainly living up to your name. :P

Are you kidding me, you don't think Hatcher or Rathje can be number one defenseman on a lot of teams in this league? Rathje doesn't score a lot, but puts in lots of ice time, and is damned big. This guy is almost as big as Pronger and plays similarly defensively. Hatcher, same thing, except he can put up a few more points per year. They can both penalty kill, and suck up a ton of minutes. Therien isn't quite on the same level, but he's never been negative in plus/minus in his career, and is damned big just like Hatcher and Rathje.
