Mario or Wayne?

Recommended Posts

Hey,

The bust topic got me thinking who would you take. For me personally I have always like mario a lot more. I feel that his physical presence and just overall power is a great addition to the finesse he has. Where as wayne is a finesse guy. I also think (IMO) that Mario would have caught wayne in Points,Goals, assists if he hadn't had cancer and missed a couple years, and if it weren't for his back more recently.

So my question who would you take and why?

Mario for the exact reasons that you just said. I agree that I think that Mario could have caught Wayne in points if it weren't for cancer and injuries.

I agree. Mario is the most physically gifted man to ever play hockey, but not the best. Orr changed the way the game was played, no other player did that to the same degree as Orr.

And Orr was a defenceman

Where Mario had it all physically and with his hands, Id have to say Orr. He paved the way for defensemen. Its amazing at how offensive he was.

Orr was was one of the best skaters the NHL has ever seen period. I only saw him play a little when I was a kid but no one dominated the game like Orr.

Wayne vs. Mario. PUHLEEZ! If you saw both playing in their prime its Wayne hands down. No one ever controlled the pace of the game and got all 5 guys on the ice more involved the Gretzky. Mario was a freak of nature when it came to his skill and size. Wayne did it looking like he came out of the high tech industry. That alone makes Wayne more impressive in my eyes.

I loved watching Wayne play for the Oilers. He was Magic on skates.

I never got the same feeling watching Mario. There was no questioning his skill and talent, he was an amazing player, but he always seemed 2nd best.

I honestly think most of Wayne's point records will reamain untoachable, even if someone better comes along. The game has changed too much.

after being a highlight junky myself, and watchign both players growing up, mario gets my vote. i feel if it wasnt for his injuries and such, he would have passed gretz, although gretz is the greatest playmaker ever, mario is the best natural goal scorer ever. in his prime at will he could turn a game around with an amazing play, and you couldnt stop him, try and hit him, no way. gretz ont he other hand, if someone actually had the balls to hit him )except for the guy who nailed him cutting across the blue and never played a game int he show again), his career would have ended early. lets not forget goalies in waynes time were pylons, where with mario, some talent existed.

oh you narrow minded people.

the best player ever was howe. he could change a game with a crunching check, create a beautiful passing play for a goal, could beat the &*@# out of someone, or score a game changing goal. besides does the great one or mario have a hat trick named after them?

but in reality comparing the greats of the past to the greats of today is unfair. why? the great one with his fitense game would not have been able to play for as long as he did, because the game was much more phyiscal than today. mario could have lasted a little longer. could orr and howe play today? that is the question we should ask. the game is much faster today, players are stronger and faster. IMHO yes howe and orr could have played today. atleast they could teach other how to fight through interference.

Remember one thing: Gretzky scored 92 goals in one season and he was not considered a goal scorer!! Wayne had vision and clarity on the ice that was considerably ahead of the opponent. It wasn't a fair fight. And Jurri Kurri was the player who could finish all the great passes from 99.

Mario had the hands in close, totally unstoppable. The size, the reach and the stride all helped make him a dominant player. Again, Kevin Stevens went from the outhouse to the penthouse scoring on Mario set-ups. And there is nothing wrong with that. Just ask Mark Recchi!

# 9 Gordie Howe- different era, different game. He could do it all: beat you on the scoresheet and beat you in the alley(with thanks to Conn Smythe-first general manager of the New York Rangers-look it up).

"Bahston goal numbaa fauh Bobby Orr!!! with assists to Esposito and Buyck, time of the power play goal 14:19." I remember Orr in his prime. Nobody but nobody could do what he did at the time. He scored 120 points and led defencemen and the NHL in scoring!! BTW, scoring 100 points was a big deal for a forward, for a defenceman it was unheard of. The man ruled hockey in his prime. It was amazing and beautiful to watch. He singlehandedly beat the Rangers in 1972 for the Cup. I should know, I was rooting for the Broadway Blueshirts. Wayne Gretzky did things as a forward that were amazing but Bobby Orr did things as a defenceman that were not thought possible! He could kill your entire power play by himself by controlling the puck and circling his net. I know our good friend in New England, Jimmy, saw many more amazing feats of Orr. Never forget the Cup Winning goal vs. St. Louis.

This pick for number one is almost too close to call.

Look to your left, gentlemen..... ;)

Actually, I stumbled across some guy's website once where he compared Plus/Minuses. I read this about six years ago, so the facts are hazy, but he essentially showed that NO ONE was close to Orr for career Plus/Minus. If it wasn't a +2 per game for his career, it was definitely many seasons of +2 per game.

I grew up watching Orr on Channel 38, but it made me respect him even more.

Imagine if Orr and Gretzky played together or better yet Mario and Howe same era/same line

Maybe it wouldn't have worked, but what a thrill if we could simulate some of that magic.

I'd have to say:

1.GWG

2.ORR

3.MARIO

4.HOWE

Orr's d partner could be Doug Harvey, Paul Coffey or Serge Savard?

and put Glenn Hall or Jacques Plante in the net

I saw this goalie in his twilight but have read enough and seen some old games to believe Terry Sawchuk was the # 1 man in nets. Give him today's equipment and it would be scary to watch him shut down the league from his net.

Bourque played with Neely, and that was freakin awesome enough for me.

It's too bad that neely messed up his hip, otherswise he might be one of the guys we are talking about in this subject....

Kovalchuk broke 40 goals once. Even if he could that for the next 10-15 season he'd be a great goal scorer and HOF'er def.................. but not a legend like Orr/Gretz/Lemieux?Howe.

Ilya would be behind Hull in career goals and a number of other people and they do not rank as the type of hockey royalty mentioned here.

Edit: Though 15 straight years of 40+ goals would pretty freakin' amazing to say the least.
