Every man needs a nice watch.

I have an TAG Link. Not the new style, but the slightly older (bulkier?) style. Prior to that I used to go through a watch a year...mostly Citizens. Hit one on an airline seat armrest, another while helping a friend move and one just plain old died. Yeah the TAGs are a little pricey, but I wear mine daily going on three years and this thing is bulletproof. IMO I definitley got what I paid for. Plus at my past watch attrition rate, if it lasts me another year and a half I figure I'm even.

One thing I would recommend is that if you buy a popular brand, get it from an authorized dealer. Yeah, you can find them cheaper online or in some stores, but I'd rather pay a little more and know I have the real thing than blow $750-2K on a fake.

I don't wear a watch

A small, portable sundial is available for 29.99 :D

Funny thing-I have a co-worker that cannot wear any type of electronic watch of any type. They just stop on him no matter what. He can only use a wind-up pocket watch. He cannot use his computer hardly because it just freezes up on him for no reason. His cell phone will just turnoff while he is speaking on it.

Funny in a spooky way

I have a Breitling Crosswind Special and an Omega Seamaster.

I love them both. I've been wearing the Omega for 3 years and it still looks fantasic. I got the Breitling as a wedding present.

Keep in mind that most expensive watches that are automatics require periodic maint. It's about $250.

I like my ESQ as well, my tastes run a little more basic...movado's etc...even instead of a Fossil I'll get a Skagen (love those mesh bands in the TX heat)

recently had some dealings with Timex (yep Timex) they make alot of the private label stuff for other companies (up to $20k) and have a watch of their own coming out for 5-600 that has the same mechanical insides as a Rolex, very nice..not sure if it has hit retail...

Automatic watches.....arn't they all automatic watches?

No. Most watches are quartz and run on a battery. An automatic is a self winding watch that runs on its own. Provided you wear it of course. If it sits it's will stop and you wll have to wind and set it again. Automatic watches are also more expensive.

Automatics are also less accurate than quartz over a month, losing or gaining more seconds compared to the atomic clock.

Interesting that a lot of high-end watch companies use the same quartz movements as lower end companies (from ETA in Switzerland). Sometimes they polish the parts of the movement, or paint them to make them look 'in-house'. You can often get the same accuracy from a $150 as you can from a $800 watch, since they use the same movement. Mind you, the case and bracelets are much different, but the guts are the same.

Automatics are usually all done in-house.

Nixon watches are shit.

My girlfriend's old roomate had one and it scratched to hell after a week. Poorly made soft metal.

Ohh....I know the wind up ones...arn't the older watches all wind up?

No again. It's not a wind up. It winds itself... (as long as you're wearing it)

My auto kept better time then any watch I've ever owned. Until I fell on it and lost the seal. Sent it back for servicing and it's never been as close. I lose a few seconds a day. That's still generally considered very good for an auto but it was darn near perfect before. I was losing a few seconds over months. Anyway, the point of an automatic is that they don't require any kind of battery and they are generally made by hand by real craftsman. Quartz watches are a dime a dozen. A nice automatic is something you keep for life.

Swatch's are great, I really love mine. My Swatch is from the last time I was in Grand Cayman. I beat on it every day, and sometimes the weekends when I go somewhere and dont want to be busting out my other watch (Rolex datejust, silver dial/white gold bezel/diamond hour markers). My Swatch is also a light version, so its practically weightless on my arm. I am looking however to retire my swatch, Ive been looking at Omegas and I want some sporty, like the seamaster. Though I might just pick up another Rolex, like the submariner or GMT master II. Either way, quartz or automatic, I cant stand being "watchless" even if I do have my cell phone.

Aren't Swatches just another recycled 80s fad or something? I guess if popped collars and polos with little animal mascots make it back, these should come back too.

I rarely wear a watch and I was randomly just walking through the mall on Christmas eve of last year. Figured I would look at the new watches. Picked this up for $125:

Nothing amazing, it does its job. I can't see myself ever dropping $1,000 on a watch though.
