KOR Shift 1 and 2

Recommended Posts

Can anyone confirm if the sizing of the Shift 1 and Shift 2 is the same or is it slightly different? Some have posted they're the same and some have posted that in early batches the Shift 2 was a half size different. I'm currently using Shift 1's and am very happy with those and even have a backup pair I picked up so I won't really need ice skates for a while, but since I heard the Shift 2's can potentially be converted for roller I may be tempted to buy a pair to do just that if the right deal comes along. If that happens I just want to know what size I should look for...the same as the Shift 1 or half size up or down.

My Shift 2's are the exact size as my Shift 1's and fit the same in terms of length.

I too solicited advice on sizing and then ordered sight unseen. Got lucky and hit the right size on the first try. Also got lucky in that I liked the skates as well.

I'm still up in the air about which I like better.

Can you post some pros and cons as compared to each other? I am in Shift 1's now and love them, but I think a higher boot might be nice (although I am OK with the lower cut).

Sure. One thing I like better on the 1's is the built-in footbed. I felt that it conformed to my foot better and is more comfortable than the 2's with the mounting plates and Superfeet Insoles. I am sure there was a specific design reason to go to the rivets and mounting plates on the 2's.

The higher cut boot is nice but, like you, I didn't have problems with the lower cut boot in the 1's anyway. I don't feel a reduction in agility or forward ankle flexion because of the higher cut boot though.

I also cannot tell a weight difference when they are on my feet even though the 2's are slightly lighter.

Protection and comfort between the two (besides the footbed) are all about the same - which is to say excellent IMHO.

In comparing the two...if someone took my 2's from me and forced me back into 1's I'd be A-OK with that. They are both great skates. So - if you love your 1's you are not really missing anything major with the 2's - just a tad more upper ankle support from the boot but IMHO a little less feel and comfort in the footbed.

Thanks! That's great feedback. On the Shift 1's footbed, I initially found it harsh, but stuck it out b/c I thought it was part of the feel...You are just a little closer to the ice. Now I am used to it and it works great.

The only downside I saw on the one-piece footbed was that I currently always pull my footbed out to "air the rivets" to reduce rusting and such (found out the hard way on my old 752 pumps that not doing so can be problematic long term). So, I was curious to see if that would hurt the Shift1's.

I think if the Shift2's have mounting plates and the like that pretty much would mean even more of a need to air (to avoid premature rusting and rot to the surrounding materials). Also, there were some grumbles before about mounting other possible chassis. Guess this would open that up as a possibility.

I sent Jimmy a PM to ask this same question, but figured would open to the masses as well - anyone know if the size in a Shift1 is the same as in a Shift2? I know that models can vary so figured someone here might be in a position to comment.

Vince had told me that it was going to be a 1/2 sz difference.

I got 11.5s which I was in Shift1 and it is tighter (my guess due to the shorter toecap.) The holder size is still the same however.

What about in relation to a Bauer, say, a Bauer size 10? What would be the Shift 2 size? I take a size 10 Bauer, but I really need a 296 holder...

Does anyone know where I could get the for $200? I've searched everywhere but can't find them. The cheapest I can find is $370. My pair of Shift 1's are getting worn down and it's time for a new pair. Thanks.

What you are referring to is way back in the thread and was a closeout of the Shift 1's. You'll wait a long time to get that skate for $200.

I searched when I saw that for a backup pair and couldn't find a deal.

You're better off saving for the Shift 2.

No idea what Rubo is talking about. There's no better skate on the market than the Kor.

He does have a point though, that they weren't able to do custom work for NHL guys. Now that they have their own manufacturing facility, maybe customization will be an option and we'll eventually see Kor in the NHL...

I also have no idea what Rubo is talking about. My last pair of skates was a pro pair of Bauer 7000's and these Kors IMO are better in every way.

Plus, read SRI's posts a few pages back. KOR doesn't care about NHL players. They (probably) make most of their money making sticks for RBK and CCM.

They will need to care about getting NHL players because the RbK contract can end at any minute. Until they decide to spend money on getting some reps on the road to show players, they won't have an NHLer in the skate.

Also, there is hot rumor that the NHLs on-ice marketing fee for 2008-09 will increase to $75k (from $40k), so, this won't be good for a small manufacturer like Kor.

As far as the capability to make a custom skate, yes they have that capability and have made such a product for an NHLer, but again, until they decide to put some reps on the road to show pro players the product, it won't matter.

Are they just being cheap?

Are they attempting to sign up new dealers? If I told my LHS about them, coudl they even sign on with Kor?

I just think it's a fantastic product and I'd hate to see them go by the wayside.
