On another note I always thought I was a square because I didn't post in 'gangsta english' & all my essay writing at school carried over to forum posts haha. I used to think that I was the only one that proofread their posts and capitalized, and used proper words such as their instead of there. Nice to know that grammar is not a lost art. :P

Keep that up. Sometimes it's okay to "be square". B)

Well SMS and Messenger services are pretty much killing allot of kid's brains when it comes to online communication. Most young kids jerk around on their cell phones or even online and therefore have a conditioned response to anything that combines technology and communication.

In a nutshell these kids see MSH as an extention of this.... Internet Messenger + SMS on their cell phone = It's OK to use bad English.

I could have just said "Kids these days!" but this is more specific. ;)

The problem, of course, is some of these kids aren't distinguishing Text Speak from proper English. At some point, that lack of command is going to hurt them in a job hunt.

I have to admit though, I tend to get lazy and type like that to get the message across quicker. But I try to minimalize it, I don't have time to spellcheck every post and instant message I write :)

If you've got nothing better to say than "OMG ROTFLMAO TTYL", then don't say anything.

Would you believe that there is a book currently on the best sellers list that consists of nothing but chat/messenger abbreviations, from cover to cover. Future high school required reading I'm sure... imagine the book reports. :)

I understand wanting to get the point across quicker. If I don't say what I have to say quickly, sometimes I forget what I was going to say.... (Pre-mature senitlity I think)

But if you are too lazy to spell check and too lazy to give a crap what others are going to see when they try to read what you wrote, why should we give a crap what you have to write??? If one does not have time to at least proofread, perhaps one should not post. We are all busy in our own minds, and it is pretty arrogant to assume that while you are too busy to be accurate, we have all the time we need to wade through crap and try to decipher instant text junk and mispellings and inaccurate abbreviations. You don't have to be an English major or a writer to write clearly.

An occasional fat finger and missed space is perfectly acceptable, but the text message abbreviations and chronic misuse of grammar is not. I think this has been covered in the "spelling in the rollerhockey forum" thread as well.

That was like, SOOOO funny. Like when you like, mentioned like, Ovy's haircut and like, thought it'd like, help your slapshot and stuff. I have to go try it... BRB ppl.

That was even irritating to write, I'm glad I don't have to read it! :)

I'm liking the new warnings approach. Maybe some of these guys will post with content more often. Props to the Mods.

We're just making it public now so it serves as an example of "what not to do" for other members. We have handed out warnings for this type of behavior in the past, it just wasn't visible to everyone.

But how long until the Mods are overrun? There's a good chance that the vast majority of their time spent on this board might very well soon be spent reviewing the content of "proposed" posts of suspect members.

Actually that is not the way it works. As a new guy you look and see what is acceptable. I am guessing this is a more intelligent and mature board than what you are accustomed to. It is your job to adapt to us, initially, not the other way around. Over time you can tell what parts of your personality you'll be able to let out and what you can and cannot get away with. Even then, it is entirely up to the moderators as to what direction the board will go. Further, there is an awesome feature that I personally have not had much experience with called "ignore". I might give it a whirl now.

Ok, I just meant I will make the odd spelling errors and mistakes or miss stuff here and there as well. I am not a perfect writer or an english major. I was not using that as an excuse to post without putting thought into it..

All we ask is that you do the best you can. We all make mistakes every day and most of us aren't here to punish you just for making a simple mistake.

I agree with Chadd. There are people here from several countries and all walks of life. When people try to put effort and thought into their posts, it shows. I think the problem that exists in all forums is the intentional use of abbreviations and slang. It makes no sense to those people that are not used to communicating like that.

Just my 2 cents.
