Custom Composite blades

Recommended Posts

Bringing my old thread back from the dead:

Well, Looks like Combat no longer wants to sell me my custom blade anymore as they have not communicated back to me since my last order, and I had not recieved my batch of blades. Thus, I unfortunately had to reverse the charge, as today was my last day to do so (order was placed 7/29). It is worth noting that I attempted to contact Combat many times, with my call's/email's not being returned. It was very unlike them, but business is business.

All of this brings me to my next question, anyone know a company that is willing to do a custom composite blade for a consumer? I understand the fee's involved in this, and have been through it 2 times before. If anyone has any suggestions, let's hear them, or you can PM if you want.

Thanks in advance to anyone that can help me.

Zach

PSHG has custom Sher-Wood T90 tapered blades (and OPS as well) with a minimum order of 3. I have used a couple blades that I got from malcb33. The feel is really good on them. The hosel is about the same length as a standard blade though. I got 2 of them, and I noticed the outer clear coat chipped pretty quickly on them and it is actually the only replacement blade I've ever broken. Half of the tenon broke away from the hosel. It may have been from a slash though because the shaft that I used it in has some damage on the same side as well. That's the most info I can give you. If you're interested in them, you might want to talk to malcb33 about the ordering process and about his luck with the blades because he has used them more than I have.

I've been using the T90 pro customs for a while. There isn't a mold fee and it's only a minimum of three (same for OPS) however it isn't your standard type pre-preg composite blade construction. The T90 pro custom blade is different from the retail T90 and from what I understand is a laminate construction which has really good feel to it and can be shaped a little (sanded or heated) without losing much stiffness. However they probably don't retain their stiffness from use either compared to a pre-preg blade. They also come with a longer hosel but I believe you can request it to be shorter if desired. A batch of these blades take about 3 weeks (if they're not busy) plus shipping time.

Sher-wood also do a TPS R8 style custom blade as well, but these are a minimum of 12 but again no mold fee. I actually have an order placed for a batch of these too. They take around a month, plus shipping time.

The mold fee thing struck me as odd when PSHG got back to me today, sounds like the way CCM/RBK made their laminate blades (refer to the "How it's Made" video). It was interesting, but I was hoping for a non laminate blade.

Is the r8 style blade a standard composite blade? Did they say? Or is it similar in construction to t90 blade? Do they cost the same as the t90?

Thanks for answering.

Base also said they do custom's but still waiting on pricing.

Long hosel versus short hosel for tapered blades -- does the difference in length affect performance or feel?

Also, is there a difference between standard blades and a long hosel tapered blade? I don't see how flex or energy transfer could be any different.

I believe the cost is the same for both style blades, but the minimums are different. I don't have my R8 style blades yet to confirm, but the guy told me its the same style construction as Easton and Bauer so I would assume a standard style blade. This wouldn't be the same as T90 retail as that is made in China. I really hope these blades feel similar to the older R8s as I really enjoyed the feel of them.

I can only speak for the Sher-wood laminate blades I've used, but I wouldn't say they're not durable. In my experience they can take quite a beating (chips, dents, reshaping) and I've yet to break one off or have one split. However from normally use they will lose some rigidity, nothing crazy but slightly less stiff than a standard composite blade construction would.

The pricing is what you LHS or PSHG has. USA and Canada is going to be different so ask you preferred retailer. The minimums for the R8 style blade is 12, the T90 pro is 3.

I have custom ops and tapered sherwood blades form pshg. They can be heated/shaped wihout losing duribilitt. They didnt come as exact clones of my pattern so a little modding with sandpaper and a heatgun isnt a problem.

For those of you that ordered custom T90 blades through PSHG, how long did it take? Did you actually speak to anyone at PSHG?

I sent out the mold stick in mid september and i got them a couple weeks ago. The ops took about a month and a half as well. I never never actually spoke to anyone exept through the message thing on the site. The blade link on the site was put up for me to order from

Sorry, but I didn't understand your message. You sent a mold stick in September and got replacement blades in November? What message thing -- the contact form under the Contact Us tab? What blade link on the site? They put up a special blade link for you?

I believe he is saying that he used the "contact us" portion on the website, which then turns into a messaging service where they can answer your question (which then you are notified via email that they have done as such). I didnnt have much luck with it and only recieved one response.

In other news Combat did finally contact me back, and are taking care of me, which I am happy to not have to pay a mold fee anywhere else again.

Just got my batch of TPS blades in. I've only used them twice but so far, so good. The feel is just like the pre-Sherwood sticks, which is exactly what I wanted.

Not really Kovalchuk clones, but the blade rocker was based on his pattern. The curve is much milder, starts later and is a touch more open as well.
