Read any good Hockey Books lately?

Recommended Posts

A friend gave me both books: "Searching for Bobby Orr" and "Eleven Seconds" - Travis Roy. I am about to start to read both these books. Have you guy either read these books or know of another book that is a "Must Read"?

I have had several coaches in the past stress reading "Hockey Tough" written by Saul Miller.

I am about 30 pages deep now, but it is pretty much telling you how to mentally prepare and get the negative stuff off your mind when your playing.

More of an instrucional guide then a book that you follow.

I tried to read "Searching for Bobby Orr", but I couldn't get through it. It's too high-brow for me.

"Putting a Roof on Winter" is a must read. Traces the origins of the game through the golden years of the NHL.

"The Boys of Winter" about the 80 US team is goos as it chronicles both sides of the story.

I'm actually finishing up "searching for bobby orr"

I think its a pretty good book. Nothing to special, but I am enjoying it.

I guess the next book I read will be one of the choices other members are saying are "must reads".

I'd second "Boys of Winter." That's really well done.

"Home Ice" is cool, too. It's about some back yard rinks around North America.

Tropic of Hockey by Dave Bidini. He plays in some semi-famous band, and writes books as well. This one recounts his experiences of traveling around the world, looking for hockey in strange places. Its a really good read, and isn't too long. He has another one about hockey, I haven't picked it up yet though.

Hockey Tough has been great, the breathing exercises not only helped me on the bench but it's also been good for my off-ice anxiety.

Searching... was okay. Started off great then got boring by about the time he hit the NHL and went downhill from there.

Still like the Brett Hull autobiography the best

Eleven Seconds was an amazing read. Took me like a week to go into the corners after reading that, though.

Just thought of another good one. The Physics of Hockey. I don't know who wrote it, but its pretty interesting. It was a bit over my head though, I'm not really a math/physics person.

I'd recommend "Ice Time" by Jay Atkinson... a fantastic story about some local guys, and the bonds that Jay made being a high school player, and his looking forward to the bonds his 5 yr old son will establish doing the same.

"They Don't Play Hockey In Heaven" by Ken Baker is an amazing one too.... quite a fantastic story. 8 yrs of out high school, and 2 yrs after brain surgery.. to minor league hockey... it makes for a great read

I picked up "Jonesy" , Keith Jones/Steve Buccigross last week when I was in Vermont on business. Definitly not high brow. I plowed through it in a few hours- it's decent if you are looking for a light read. My only complaint was the surprising amount of typos.

I've got "Putting a Roof on Winter" sitting on my desk, I think i'll finally get to that next..

I read Jean Beliveau's biography..I thought it was pretty good and offered some interesting insights to the Habs teams of the past.

Midnight Hockey by Bill Gaston is a hilarious book for all us beer league guys.

When the Lights Went Out by Gare Joyce is a good book about a game most of the guys on this board are too young to remember.

I recommend Goon and Zamboni Rodeo.

I don't think I need to explain what "Goon" is about, but it is definitely entertaining.

Zamboni Rodeo is an inside look at a minor league team in Texas (a real team, the Austin Icebats of the CHL (Central Hockey League).

Even as a Devils/Marty fan, I don't think I'll get around to reading that one any time soon; if at all. I've never understood the compulsion to write an autobiography before one's playing career is even over.

I highly recommend:

Hockey Tough- Simple, and maybe a little repetitive, but outstanding nonetheless.

Searching for Bobby Orr-it did have its boring parts, but I thought it did a great job of telling the Bobby Orr story.

Jean Beliveau: My Life in Hockey- Terrific. One of my favorite hockey books. Beliveau is actually a pretty good writer, and I thought book offered a fantastic insight into the Canadiens as a franchise.

Complete Conditioning for Hockey- If you find yourself running out of exercises to do, ways to get into shape, or ways to develop your skills and strength using off-ice training, you'll love this book.

The Code- Fun to read, with lots of great input from real NHL tough guys.

The Game- by Ken Dryden- I'm still reading this, and its not the most exciting book, but I'm enjoying it so far. Ken offers a really different perspective on the Habs...the perspective of a goalie.

Power Skating- by Laura Stamm- Fricking awesome. Its tough to describe skating in a book, but if you do the exercises and follow the principles in the book, you WILL see dramatic improvement in your skating.

Oh, and Brett Hull: In His Own Words is so bad that it has become a running joke to me and my friends. Brett was really great at scoring goals, but I bet a 3rd Grade student would write a more interesting book. This book was terrible. The only way you'll like it is if you're a completely insane, obsessed Brett Hull fan. Had I known that the book was going to be this bad, I would have gladly donated the price I paid to a fund created with the sole purpose of funding a strike team to find Brett and stop him from writing the book in the first place.

Eleven Seconds was a real good book... difficult to put down after you start, and difficult to return to the library when the book was due.
