Smelly Gloves

Recommended Posts

Well this seems like a stupid question but here goes nothing.. My hands smell so bad after hockey that I have to scrub my hands for minutes to attempt to get the smell off my hands..now I know the best option is to get new gloves but there is no point when i will be getting new ones next year.. i have had my vapor 20's for about a year and a half and Im not a fan of washin my gloves because I did that once and they banged them up pretty bad.. I cant wait for JR's response :P ..so any ideas? THANKs

Have you tried soaking the gloves?

I suspect by washing you mean that you're throwing them in the washing machine, and I can understand why they get beat up in there. I've always soaked my gloves in a tub of water and woolite. I put some weights on them so they don't just float around, and I'll swash em around in the water a bit. Let them soak a day or so, let them rinse, then air dry.

I've never had major problems with my gloves/hands smelling, but I sweat a ton and they get crazy wet.

Make sure you air out your equipment really well is my best tip.

OH LAWDY LAWD...

You're just a dirty person Margo, nothing is gonna take that funk away. All of you Miller kids are just dirty, Meryll especially. I'm gonna have to talk to momma Miller about this.

fabreeze.

Once you sweat in them again, the smell is back. Funk Free and a few other products do help reduce the smell of already stinky gloves but the best solution is to dry them and use those treatments before they smell badly. Once they stink, you're screwed.

Yeah, true. Hockey equipment is supposed to smell, I just deal with it.

fabreeze.

I tried that once and it made my hands raw. I don't know if I just had a reaction of something, but I wouldn't recommend it.

I never spray it inside, I just give all of my stuff a quick misting.

There was an Esporta wash system in my area, and I found that to be an awesome solution. $50 for a full wash of all my gear. Sure. Why the hell not.

I'm simply amazed players just now are trying to figure out what to do with smelly gloves.

If this person works with that Cougars impersonator then I fear for your chain.

Best way is to prevent it. Been using washing my hands before games and then getting a hit of hand sanitizer just before putting them on. They go into the shock doctor bag when done - no issues yet, knock on wood.

i wash all my gear in the washing machine every few months. use detergent and ammonia. works well. go the laundrymats with the large front loading washers. that sani sport cleaner is a ripoff. the hockey store here charges 30 bucks and it doesnt do nearly as good of a job as the washing machine.

also there is this OT spray that most hockey places sell. that stuff is crap. your gear ends up smelling worst....a mix of sweat and chemicals.

This won't help your gloves, but it's an alternate solution.

1) Wash your hands IMMEDIATELY after playing. Don't wait until you get home.

2) Make sure to wash the BACKS of your hands and fingers. If you're showering after the game, you have to make it a point to actually get the soap on the backs of your hands.

3) Rinse and lather up AGAIN. Trust me, you didn't get the funk off in the first wash.

It seems like a no-brainer, but this will make a big difference.

I sweat profusely while I play and am using a pair of MIA's for ice and XX's for inline. I have been using funk free for about 2 years. Combine this with me airing out my equipment in the bed of my truck everyday and my stuff stays pretty damn good.

I found this really good. I got some second hand gloves a while a go and they smelt pretty bad, but I used the Ozone shoe purifier after everytime I used them and the smell didn't completely go away, but was much, much better. Maybe give it a go?I

Try washing your hands with shaving cream when you get off the ice. I knew some guys who swore by it back in HS.

To tame the smell down a bit...just air them out after every ice time. A little fabreeze won't hurt either. I've aired mine out after every ice time with a little fabreeze and there's virtually no smell on them right now.

To get the smell off your hands...try the fast orange hand cleaner, it's worked well for me.

Good call on the hand sanitizer, I'm going to pick up a bottle of that when I get new gloves.

Something useful on a stink glove thread...go figure.

I think this thread is different from the others; the other ones ask about de-stinking the gloves, and this one asks about de-stinking the hands after using the stinky gloves.

I used to use a surgeon's antiseptic, Hibitane (it's not a soap), that is no longer available. I now use Tersaseptic.
