A win tonight against the flyers puts the caps in first place in the division. They have 2 games in hand over the thrashers and canes, and are 1 point behind them.

I'll be in section 103 row R if anyones going to the canes game on friday

Who would have thought that at 6-14-1 on November 21st, and in last place in the league, the caps would be in a position to take first place in the division before the first week of february was done.

And ovechkin is just a god damned scoring machine at the minute, 28 goals in his last 30 games, along with 17 assists for 45 points in the past 30 games. Not bad at all

Most of the guys I play hockey with are Flyers fans, we need to win against the Flyers.

A huge turn around for this team, its great. But in reality, they should've been playing this well in the beginning of the year.

MVP? If they make the playoffs, he has a great chance for it

If they make the playoffs, Boudreau has to get at least a mention as coach of the year too. He is 18-10-3 I think (possibly 18-10-4) since taking over

Thank god Poti finally made the goal sheet. The Caps have been rolling but is obviously we need someone else to complete this team. The loss of Nylander looks bigger and bigger each game.

From last in the division, last in the conference and last in the league with a 6-14-1 record and 13 points on November 21st....Ladies and gentlemen, I give you, your first place Washington Capitals who have gone 20-10-4 since the coaching change.

I will be loud and proud against the canes tomorrow night, from section 103 (although 2 of the people going with us are canes fans!!!)

Excellent job by the Caps, but what is up with that division? 1st place to 4th separated by 2 points and every team has had more goals against than goals for. If the Caps keep up their improved play, I could really see them running away with the division title.

Just more proof that division winners aren't always deserving of a playoff spot. The Caps have done a good job in turning themselves around, but still, it's a crap rule.

I think it's a good rule, makes for a much more intense playoff race, just look at how close all the teams in the division are...

I'll say it again and again and it'll never happen. Teams that win their division should get a playoff spot, but they shouldn't be guaranteed at least a #3 seeding. If they're worse than the other teams, lump them in at #8.

I also wouldn't be so quick to call these teams mediocre since they've had 2 Cup winners in the last 3 seasons.

I'll say bitter table for 1. Coming from the worst team in the NHL to a playoff contender has to be recongized.

Looking at the history of the division as mentioned early has a lot of stanley cup contendors and winners.

I don't really like the idea of a team winning a poor division being put in the top 3 come playoff time. I personally think it's bad for the playoffs as a whole. Giving them a playoff spot for winning their division, but not automatically seed #3, is actually a really good idea.

A bit of a fan? Well thats great. I am a Caps fan and have been for my whole life way before Alex came along.

If you look at how the NHL's playoffs are setup mediocre gets you into the playoffs. Allowing half the conference does that.

The rules are set up this way so there is no sense in complaining that a team does not deserve there spot when they are playing in the rules provided by the league.

In all sports (most adopt this style of playoff rewarding division leaders) there are ebs and flows in who the power house divisions are. But with the SE division having all but 1 team play in a Stanley Cup. Having some of the most prolific scorers in the league in Ovi and Kovie, its hard to chastise this division based purely on record.

What does how much of a Caps fan you are have to do with the argument you're putting up? I'm not a fan of any one team very heavily, so that really holds no merit as far as I'm concerned. I didn't mean they were undeserving of a playoff spot, just not 3rd place, should they keep their relative position until April.

Well, lets right this jolly hoho ship.

It should make you all very pleased and delighted that I am taking a half day from work, walking the dogs and going in to the irish channel, conveniently located across from the rink, where I shall have guinness, battered sausages and shepherds pie or stew before going to the game.

:D come on caps keep it up and theres a good chance of making the playoffs. As for all this arguing its the caps team thread, if you don't like the idea of them making the playoffs then tough luck go and post somewhere else!
