Speeding behind speeders

Recommended Posts

I've gotten quite a few speeding tickets so i've finally made myself drive the speed limit but often times i get too impatient. When i see someone blast past me i've taken to speeding up and following (not dangerously close) them. The idea behind this is that if there is a speed trap, the radar will pick him up but i wont get caught. Is there any truth to this or is it just wishful thinking..?

I don't know about that theory, but it's sort of a stupid chance to take regardless. Witht he way they run things now, if there's a speed trap, they may pull over douche #1, but they'll end up taking your plate number and mailing you the ticket next week. I wouldn't rely on any of that kind of hearsay.

You want to be in front of a pack of speeders, not the last car in it. If a cop gets a radar reading, he's going after the closest car to him. Also, I don't know about other states but I know two things about Jersey.

1) Trooper's guns are set to alert them at 80, they don't watch every car that goes by's reading.

2) You won't get pulled over if you're just following the flow of traffic while staying in a lane.

Your theory wont work according to my personal experiences. Twice i've been in a car where we were following another car at about the same speed and got pulled over along with the car we were following. We had some distance between cars too.

I know the law in Maryland is a cop can't pull you over for speeding unless your doing more than 9 mph over the speed limit.

I state trooper plays on a mens league here and he told me that most Illinois cops go by the rule "nine youre fine, ten youre mine"

I was popped last yr for 75 in a 55, I hadn't realized the speed limit dropped from 65 to 55 at a certain spot on I-4. Needless to say, I wasn't blowing by anyone, but still got nailed. I really don't think doing 75 behind a guy doing 79 is a safeguard whatsoever...

:D good stuff. I usually keep it below 9 myself

I usually set the cruise at 9 over... but if you want to get somewhere and traffic is flowing faster then you just jump in the middle somewhere. Not at the front or the back because those are the two places where youre most likely to be hit.

Watch out how close youre following too because thats a pretty hefty ticket as well.

never ever ever the front or back.

Also, remember: if you fly by a cop well over the limit...don't slow down! That just makes it so he can catch you ;)

I had to go to traffic school for a ticket when I was under 18 and I heard the same advice from a cop working the school: Nine you're fine, ten you're mine. Following this rule that ticket I got as a young'un is still the only one on my record!

what little experience i have in receiving tickets for moving violations (one speeding ticket in about seven years) would indicate that yes, being in front of a pack of speeders is bad. but, i can't say firsthand whether or not being in back is any better.

as a result of my ticket, i've been sticking with the speed limit +9 rule lately as well (of course depending on conditions and flow of traffic etc); however, that may be partially because i'm still in post-ticket financial recovery mode.

10% above speed limit is a set value to me... so travelling at 100kmh, max I'd go would be 110kmh... which still kinda meets the no more than 10 (doesnt really translates in the mph sense, but it keeps me safely under the 'limit')

I was in court for my one and only speeding ticket (got probation) and there was a guy there for speeding also. The cop was there and everything, so they start going through the case. The guy was apparently flowing with traffic, but just speeding.

He used the excuse "I was just flowing with traffic... blah blah" The cop said "Have you ever been bird hunting before? It's the same as radaring"

He didn't get off that ticket

Technically a cop can pull you over for going 1mph over the speed limit. That is why its call a speed LIMIT.

But yes generally I have heard from most cops is that they don’t want the bother of pulling someone over unless they are doing 7 or more over the limit.

As for traveling in a speeding pack I have been caught at the back, I have seen people pulled over who were in the front AND I've also seen cops pulling 5 cars over together all for speeding.

There is no sure-fire way to get away with speeding.

I know a cop who did that. He said the conditions were horrible and the driver was endangering others because of how fast they were going.

Cops suck.

The whole concept of how speed limits work is retarded to me. Everyone already goes X amount over the limit anyways, so why not just make that number the actual limit and then pull you over if you break that rather than having some arbitrary cop decide if what you are doing is ok or not? If speed limits are so important why doesn't every jurisdication have photo radar? Why don't automated tolls ticket you if you travel a certain distance in a certain time and it's determined your avg. speed was over the limit? Why? Because speeding tickets are less about public safety, less about deterring speeding, and almost entirely about being a cash grab for the government.

Because a speed has to be set or else the speed will just keep going up. ex. on a 35 mph road, people go 40 mph usually. If they made it 40 mph because everyone goes that fast, in 5 years, people will be taking advantage of the limit and go 45 mph. then 45 mph will be the acceptable speed and it'll keep going up.

At some point the speed will be over a speed (X) that is unsafe for the road and if an accident were to happen going X mph, the local government would probably be sued because the speed limit is too high and unsafe. It's not worth it. Go the damn speed limit, you'll still get to your destination

A speed limit is determined on the terrain, traffic flow, zoning (residential, commercial, etc), sight distance in certain situations, etc. Roads are designed for over the determined speed limit. The speed limits are conservative which is why most cops allow some speeding.

photo radars cost alot of money and aren't totally reliable. (especially in rainy conditions)

About the tolls... they do have them. PA turnpike. It's a photo system, but the same idea that you said.

Speeding tickets are about making money and public safety

Depends on the officer, but mostly wishful thinking. My father was a mountie for 38 years. When it came to traffic stories, he often spoke of pulling over the second car because the driver thought he wouldn't get nabbed. Another trick was one police car pulling over the second speeder, and radioing a car ahead to pick up the first speeder, after he thought he was in the clear. I guess there wasn't a whole lot happening on New Brunswick highways in the 70's...

If you want to follow a fellow speeder, the best thing to do is follow the 1/4 mile rule. That way, if there is a speed trap ahead, the cop will already be busy with the "rabbit" and won't even notice you. Also, you will be able to see the rabbit's brake lights with plenty of time to adjust so you aren't car number two on the cops hit list.

The "rabbit" rule is a good one. But if youre careless youre going to bet burned. Follwing a guy going 90 is just plain stupid. Chances are where there is one cop, theres another. And getting two is better than one. Be conservative and follow along at a distance. If he gets nailed, youll notice. Another way is to pay attention to the big rigs on the road. If theyre moving along a good clip, theres no trap ahead. Those boys chirp like mad to one another and they are constantly in the know. But number one rule. Dont come on to the brakes when you see a cop. Looks terrible. Your car nose dives and it makes you look guilty.

I usually set my personal limit around 80-85. One thing about the rabbit. Everyone has to take a turn in front. If someone is pacing me as their lead car and they don't step up and take the lead after a number of miles then I'll just slow it right down until they can't help but pass and take the lead.
