Interview with varlamov

http://www.onfrozenblog.com/2008/12/15/ref...cial-night.html

Interesting bit here, when the caps beat them a couple of weeks back, Carbonneau said they were lucky, the goalie wasn't really tested, which apparently pissed ovechkin off.

SovSport: The whole team played a very emotional game.

"We wanted to prove to Montreal that we must be respected. Here are Carbonneau's words that he said after the game in Washington three weeks ago . . . "

Ovechkin pointed to a piece of paper that was put on the wall where Carbonneau's words about luck and not really testing Theodore were highlighted. And then Ovechkin added:

"What now? What will Carbonneau say after tonight's game? That we were lucky again?"

Some news and notes from tarik over at the post...

http://voices.washingtonpost.com/capitalsi...fraid.html#more

I'm writing about Varlamov for tomorrow's paper. Fedorov was kind enough to do the interpreting.

...

...

As you might imagine, the Caps are pretty excited about Varlamov's performance. But they are also keeping things in perspective.

"It was pretty special," Boudreau said. "Here's a guy who has played 10 pro games [in North America], going into Montreal, 21,000 people, against a team that was angry after losing the night before."

"But I wouldn't get too excited about it, either," he added. "We're not putting him in Carey Price mode because he's played in one game. We think he has a really bright future, but we'd like to see him play a little more."

GM George McPhee said: "He played really well, but we're going to have keep working on his game like we do with all of our young goalies, continue to build structure and everything else. But in terms of athleticism, he's off the charts and in terms of competitiveness, he's as good as they come in that department, too."

...

...

It's well known that Milan Jurcina has one heck of heavy shot. Today, after a challenge from Karl Alzner, Jurcina took aim at the cross bar at one end of the rink at KCI. The result? He broke two sections of plexiglass. Wonder if that will be coming out of his check?

Yeah I'm pretty sure the shots were taken right inside the blueline, seeing as both are defensemen. But Jeez that's a canon.

Johnny was saying that the only player he has ever faced a shot from, who hurt him through his pads was juice.

And he faced MacInnis and Pronger in practice in St. Louis

I knew there was a reason I watch Caps play.

On the other note, Semin was a little careless today. Anybody know if he is 100%?

No...he was just playing against the Isles. How bout that pass to AO in his first goal of the game. Ridiculous.

The D seemed to be somewhat careless today. Johnson was a stud for the first 55 minutes.

Playing against the Isles or not Semin doesn't cause this many breakaway turnovers.

Alzner is also good to watch. Is he going to stick around for a while or be sent back down when a player returns?

Have you seen Semin play before today? He is notorious for high risk plays, and losing the puck when trying to stickhandle one time too many.

He has some of the best hands in the league, so covers well, but he makes a lot of stupid turnovers, and usually follows up with a stupid penalty because he is trying to correct it

Was that me? Or did you tell that to me? And btw Minsubkie shouldn't you be finishing your paper on The Office?

Semin's high risk plays bring me to my feet, along with everyone else at Verizon. He is a highly entertaining (and highly skilled) player, and he is slowly getting better at his defensive responsibilities. Last check he led the Caps with a +18.

And I believe the 3rd part of a Semin hat-trick is actually, "Falling down with no one within 20 feet of him".

edit: Was looking for the "Semin Hat-Trick" outlined, but this is all I could find...

Washington Capitals Drinking Game*!

Naturally we don’t condone the abuse of alcoholic beverages…but sometimes it’s just plain necessary.

*Please drink responsibly, and only if over the age of 21 (or living in Canada). CapsChick is not liable for any property damage, liver failure or visions of pink elephants and dancing Brieres experienced by those playing the Capitals Drinking Game.

Take a drink if:

- Alexander Semin falls down without being touched

- A Pulte Homes commercial is shown

- Joe Beninati refers to someone “scampering” into the zone

- The Caps complete three or more pretty passes…then turn over the puck

- Alex Ovechkin scores a goal

- Either Caps goalie makes a flashy glove save

- Either Caps goalie wanders aimlessly out of his crease

- Mike Green lurks behind the opponent’s net

- Brashear starts a fight

- One of the Comcast anchors mispronounces any NHLer’s name

- Locker uses any of the following terms: twig, biscuit, basket, breadbasket, coconut (or coconata), 7 hole or lumber

- Boyd Gordon lands on his butt

- Someone mentions Crosby and it’s not a Penguins game

Take two drinks if:

- Semin falls down without being touched and turns over the puck

- Tom Poti makes a flashy save

- Matt Bradley scores a shootout goal

- Ovechkin knocks over a teammate with his goal celebration

- Nylander dances around everyone in the offensive zone, including his own teammates

- Semin, Nylander or Morrisonn get called for hooking

- A Hershey callup scores a goal

- Locker refers to: Jay Bouwmeester as “Meester Bouwmeester”, Yanic Perreault as “No-Panic Yanic”, or Cam Ward as “The Warden”

- The Caps score 5-on-3

- Chris Clark starts a fight

- Gordon lands on his butt and still makes a good play

- Brooks Laich’s helmet falls off in a goalmouth scrum

Finish your drink if:

- Someone actually does scamper into the zone

- John Erskine scores a goal

- Semin falls down without being touched, turns over the puck and takes a hooking penalty. (Finish another one if he does all three then comes out on the next shift and scores a highlight reel goal.)

- Jeff Schultz has a multi-point game- Comcast goes an entire game without cutting pointlessly to the bench during a faceoff

- Nicklas Backstrom starts a fight

- Flash gets a hat trick

You right guys, that was my first 5 minutes of watching Semin play and that he is a catastrophic turn over machine. Maybe next year Semin!

Johnny is out nursing his nagging hip injury, so it's Theo and Varlamov getting the work in todays practice.

Ovechkin on the ice, skating but not doing drills. Boudreau was not happy with the teams performance last night and said "EVERYONE" would be skating this morning, which includes Ovey, who was meant to be having a maintenance day.

Fedorov still out

Brian Pothier making progress, skated in full pads for an hour before the team took the ice, with one of the coaches. Good news, I hope he makes a full recovery from his concussions.

Erskine says he hopes to return to practice tomorrow, has been working out on his own the last few days. He also had a concussion.

After Ovechkin scored that overtime goal, did you see him holding a Bauer stick? Tape looked like something he has. Did he run out of sticks? I thought the only non-CCM gear he had were his Tuuk holders. Something going on?
