Beflar

Does anyone else buy for hockey gear when they don't even need it?

Recommended Posts

I realized a couple days ago that I have as many gloves as I have game ready sticks... That seems off when you're talking MSH gear-whoredom. I need more sticks.

I was at Monkeysports in Santa Ana just yesterday to get some holders mounted on some skates. I promised myself I wasn't going to buy anything, but in the end I came out with 2 se16 sticks, a pair of RBK gloves, and another s9 helmet. I just couldn't help myself. As of now the count stands at this:

-12 pairs of skates

-27 pairs of gloves

-17 OPS

-9 Helmets

-7 pairs of pants

Maybe we should organise a donation of gear that anyone doesn't feel needed anymore to a charity hockey group that can give this gear to kids that play but cannot afford to load up as often as we do. I assume there's "inner city hockey" programs in LA or NYC etc.

Just an idea to give back to hockey thats all. Anyone else think this is a good idea/know of any programs that could benefit?

There are some programs to donate used gear like that. The NHL used to have one called "the used equipment bank" but the link I found is dead.

There was a program a few years back for something similar the Dallas Stars did (give some gear get a free preseason ticket) but can't remember the name.

Regardless, this is a pretty cool idea.

Yep, I buy stuff for no reason at all, but I have been waiting for the online coupons lately. Here's a great one....Lettered "Lupul" Edmonton jersey and 3 cool t-shirts (Stars, Canucks, and Preds) from http://www.hockeyattire.com. The t-shirts were 70% off ($3.99 about), and so the jersey that was supposed to already be only $29 gets discounted too! Paid $19 for the 4 items and $10 for shipping. I don't like any of those teams in particular, but hey it's hockey right? Buy of the year! Can't wait to wear the Oiler jersey out in the yard!

A lot of guys convince themselves if they have top end gear or newer gear they'll play better but that's an absolute crock. It's just a reason to justify their gear whoredom syndrome. Another problem is some people can't stand to see someone have a particular piece of equipment and if they don't have that piece and it gives them a feeling of inadequacy so they need to catch up or be on parr. These are probably two catalysts that promote the GAS conditon.

I agree on both. I have no delusions of increased talent based on gear, i just love buying it and having it, fancying myself a collector.

THANK GOD!! I thought I was the only one who had gear whore syndrome. For me it's nice to have a place to talk about it. I'm not as bad as others, I only have an extra pair of skates and 5 sticks. Fighting the urge right now for an Easton bucket and Warrior mitts......

How many steps is it going to take to kick this?

I would love to do that. Maybe we should talk to JR about putting together some kind of MSH donation effort, and maybe during the MSH skate, collect all donated equipment and present it to an organization. That would be amazing.

Great idea man. If you've got old gear that you're not collecting, someone may as well make some use of it. I gave away my old stuff to someone just starting Ice Hockey, and will give any stuff I'm not going to use to our development council here.

If you're never going to use it, may as well give someone else the chance to!

Thanks for this thread... I feel a lot better about my issue.... but then again, I'm now feeling justified in buying a 3rd pair of skates that I don't really need. Always keeping an eye out for the right size, since I'm really only comfortable in one brand/size. I've gotten worse shopping online and kind of started hoarding since I moved about 4 hours from the nearest (overpriced) LHS in the US.

Recently I had been buying and trying more OPS than I really need... picking up a bunch of older, but (seemingly) decent sticks. Have bought/been given 10 OPS since the start of the season, broken only one (under warranty) and sold one shaft on eBay. Pretty sad, since I only play beer league now. My wife doesn't get it, and she's right.

Feel better because I hooked up a buddy of mine who picked the game back up with pretty much a full set of gear and two shafts (he had given me a bunch of his kids' old baby stuff previously, so it worked out really well).

Pretty impressed by some of the collections that have been spoken of in this thread.

The Rangers sponsor (or used to atleast) a program called "Ice Hockey in Harlem", link: http://www.icehockeyinharlem.org/ by the looks of their site it looks as if the Rangers are still involved in it to some extent.... I know when Adam Graves was still playing he was extremely active in that program, he now works for the Rangers and is in charge of things like that... just one of the reasons NY'ers love him so much.

As far as hockey gear whorage... In my head I'd love to be a hockey gear whore but my wallet won't allow it. My other hobbies are too expensive and generally get top priority... I've spent thousands of dollars on tattoo work, and am constantly dropping more money into modifying my car (VW's are a disease, a cult... my fiancee gets jealous). I feel guilty spending $100 on a new stick, therefore I'll never be a gear whore :(

I kept buying and selling stuff for quite a long time. Actually I was pretty much obsessed with buying stuff since I was in my early teens. I think it actually reached an unhealthy point several years ago and I had to downsize to retain my sanity.

I actually found what helped me out is to stop buying shafts and blades and move to one piece sticks. If I can't easily ship and sell my sticks, I can't swap them out constantly, so I'm forced to use what I have. I don't really break shafts much and blades last me quite a while, so I should be able to get six months out of each stick that I find on clearance.

The rest of my gear I am really happy with. I bought top of the line stuff when I got serious about playing and researched what I needed, and don't have any urge to buy more elbows/gloves/shins/pants/skates/helmet/etc. Just the sticks.

Agreed, once I get something that really works for me or is top of the line I really don't have a problem with buying anything else. The one exception is my gloves; there are just so many color combos and I recently discovered the world of custom gloves; which I foresee becoming a problem. Just have to find some black RBK 8k pants and I can stop buying. It's way too hard on the wallet.

+1 Except for gloves I really dont need anything else ever. And OPS's :)

I notice that I always like trying different things like curves/flexes etc. I also notice I like to experiment with different things in life, like chip flavors, restaurants, drinks. Even if I try something and love it I'll want to eat something new just to see how it is.

Any of you guys like that?

Dang... just used this thread as inspiration to pluck a pair of '06 Vector 10 skates on eBay. Rationalizing the hell out of my purchase as we speak. (The T Blades on my old ones are starting to annoy the hell out of me).

I got into buying all kinds hockey gear that I really didn't need and it can be a hard cycle to break. For me I think it started when a buddy said something like "Those will probably be the last set of skates you will ever need." I'm 42 and even though I have never really let age bother me for some reason that remark seemed to have a strange effect. All of a sudden I was buying all kinds of closeout gear, nothing high tech and expensive but older style stuff that I wanted years ago but at the time I really could not afford. Funny how hockey seems to do this because strangly enough I still have a baseball glove I have had since I was a teenager and I would never give it up for something new, heck I have never even considered buying a new ball glove.

I went on a rampage just recently. New gloves, new helmet, new cage to put on helmet, two new shafts, three new blades, new skates, extra set of runners, plus money that will be spent getting the blades profiled. Also bought a couple of RBK platinum practice jerseys that are too big and of course I chucked the receipt and can't return. Anyone need a XXL Navy RBK Edge jersey? Way too big for me, I need a XL only.

The worst part is I already had good gear. I don't even play competitive hockey anymore, so I didn't even need this stuff. I get like this with golf too. I go through periods where all I think about is playing and periods when I want to constatntly try out new stuff.

I think that the donation thing is a great idea... however it needs to be a drop off, not even get out of the car thing. Worse thing that would happen is you get a bunch of MSH members coming together, and it will most probably become a trade-fest rather than a donation. In the end everyone goes home with traded gear, and all that the donation would have would be some old socks and some skates with no axles.
