Strong Sticks Needed!

Recommended Posts

So here's my dilemma. Although I have been lucky enough to break sticks within the 30 day warranty date,my father doesn't like spending loads of money to buy a stick that will last 6 weeks if you include the first stick and the warrantied stick. I just broke a One95 in 24 days, I broke 60-Day Warranty Montreal Nitros in 3 weeks, and Mission Fuel T.I. Pro's in about 6 weeks each, I've broken 2 Easton Synergy SE's in 3-4 weeks each. The list goes on and on, and my Dad is becoming very frustrated as am I (more guilt than anything). Is this what I should expect if i want a high-quality stick? I had a Synergy II that was amazing but I broke sooo many blades and they were very hard to find, and that's why we don't want to go to 2 pieces because they seem to be becoming obsolete.

I know this question has been asked so many times, but what I'm really trying to ask is is there any high-performance, high-quality sticks that actually last for a long time? I'm seriously considering just buying Stealth's from 3 years ago at my local sportscheck for $140 to get the deal.

your dad is buying you sticks? wow maybe you should earn your own money and buy your sticks, I dont think you'd be breaking many then.

I've offered to buy my own sticks but he seems to believe that it's part of the game. I think it's a joke that sticks are so expensive and they don't even last. I always try to find deals to lighten the load.

What is breaking on all these sticks? If you are breaking shafts, you are probably eating too much ice on your shots. If you are playing center, it is hell on your blades. How often do you play in a month? Sticks just go after enough hard use. I used to get 2 or 3 games out of a wood before I bowed the thing out or turned the blade to mush. I am constantly cracking the toes cof comp blades but I have become something of an artist with quick cure epoxy to take care of this.

All breaking at the shaft. I play 4 times a week, and i do rip at the puck but I never thought I ate too much of the ice. I don't really want to change the way I shoot because it works, I just want to find a durable stick.

try a stiffer stick. have you ever though about using a repair service for your sticks.

you said that you had a syngery II and liked it but broke to many blades. so what are you breaking shafts or blades. if its blades why not order 6-12 at a time. my experience is that i like 2 piece better b/c i break blades.

as far as shaft/sticks have you tried a warrior dolomite/ innovative 1100? many people on this board have talked about their durablity.

thats the dumbest statement ever.

i've been buying my own sticks for a long time, and my parents have bought me one here and there, but i play no differently with them...its not like he tries to break sticks, and if you pay with your own money, all that means is he will feel worse about breaking them, he wont stop breaking them though...

and yeahh, my vote goes to the syNergy ST, I have the old green one, and aside from a few paint chips and dings on the blade, that thing is a tank...

don't buy NikeBauer if you're looking for durability IMO, or SE's for that matter.

and BTW what flex do you use and whats your height and weight?

Is it possible the sticks you are using have the wrong lie. try a lower lie. Also maybe the shaft is too long for your height and your taking too much of a divit as happens with golf clubs that are too long. Just a thought, maybe it will help.

To a certain degree, your question is like asking if there is a high performance Ferrari that has ample room, great utility, and awesome gas mileage....

For me, the most durable sticks with the best puck feel are the Busch sticks. However, they weigh a bit more (the Laser is 500 grams) and don't have the taper science behind them. However, great, long lasting twigs with superior puck feel for a composite.

However, presuming that's not kosher, then go with a stick that can be easily converted such as one of the TPS sticks or an XX (not XXX or XXXX) which after the blade breaks you can easily heat and remove the blade.

Short of that, just get used to buying close outs - no need to dump $200 on a twig and $50 on replacement blades if you're going to tear them up that quickly.

Synergy blades are very fragile...no surprise you are breaking them. I would look at Warrior stuff, it's not the best performance but it's durable. Easton ST as well.

What blades were you using with your synergy II? if you had luck with that shaft maybe a more durable blade can help. I too have found I rarely break shafts, unless its a ops. I'm not going to tell you to try and change your shot but I'm also curious of when you're breaking them ie practice or game, when my parents bought my sticks i never used my "good" stick in practices or anything, for the same reason as you, guilt. I know its not best to practice with something you dont play with but it's a suggestion to maybe have cheaper ops' for practice and whatnot. But if you've broke shafts on your ops and blades on your 2pc sticks, im sure we could find a blade that would compliment a shaft that lasts for you. I also agree with Oggie, I sometimes buy sticks when I don't need them (I'm sure no one on here has done that ) when they come one sale, to lighten the financial load.

Exactly...by the way...nice avatar!

I went back to a two piece because I was going through too many OPS. I increased stiffness from 85 to 100+...still didn't help. I now use a 77 flex One95 shaft and CCM Thorton blades...and I have only broke one in two years. I really liked the feel of the U+, so I bought two of them to try the OPS route again. I kid you not...the first period of the first use....SNAP!

he already stated that hes gone through them

I agree with the Busch idea. (not because im from switzerland) there new Icelab model is 480 grams, well balanced and durbale, you only need to order 3 at a time to get a custom job done, although in switzerland they are a bit on the pricy side, there are one of the most durable one piece sticks i have used.

If all of the sticks are braking in the same area, it isn't the sticks. You can either keep breaking sticks or change the way you shoot.

An excellent point

+1 Easton ST.

Sidebar: I have a ST sakic curve ( all blue ). I also have a Warrior Weight blade ( ak27) that I'd like to get a Easton ST shaft for. Would this be a durable combo?

I have an old ST blue one sitting around that I didn't particularly like but I may go back and try that. As for too long of a stick, I am a D and my stick lies about an inch and a half below my neck while on skates so that's not the issue. I'm 6'1 170lbs and use 100/102 flex. I used an 85 flex with my mission because the 100 was way too stiff and I couldn't even shoot.

I'd love to try two pieces again however. When I used the Synergy II like I said I broke a lot of blades not shafts, but I also really loved those sticks, unfortunately it was very hard to find replacement blades. Now that there are all these huge supply hockey stores nearby (Pro Hockey Life in particular) I may be able to go back to 2 piece. They have a one95 two piece that I may try, or who knows. for now I'll use the warranties One95 and maybe try the ST again.

Thanks guys!

I agree with S.Gagne12

I bought a NBH One90 6 months ago and I'm still using the same one. IMA I'm more of a puck moving d-men then a shooter. But the stick takes constant abuse from slashes and etc. I picked up another one incase this one does break, plus lhs are clearing them out with the new One95 out.

NBH One90 FTW!

if your blade is standard, then the new ST shaft is compatible, won't perform quite like the ops but will be durable. If your blade is tapered then it won't be compatible and maybe look at a synergyII or SE if you want to stick with easton. These 2 will perform more like your ops, with lower kick. Also that Weight blade has a lower lie than your Sakic, which you might already know, but just in case it'll feel a bit different from the Sakic.

I am pretty sure the AK27 blades are standard. It currently sits in a old Easton Z Bubble shaft that is too stiff. Was looking a 87 flex One95 shaft at my LHS as a possible. The Weight is a lower lie but it is perfect for me. The Sakic is do-able but maybe a touch higher in lie than I'd need. Still a great stick I will hang onto.

thanks, habsfan87
