Tacki-Mac grips

Recommended Posts

I use the Wrapped Textured grip model but cut the butt end about half way. Being a thin rubber its easy to customize what you want.

I couldn't find one I liked. The Kane was close, but no knob.

I switched to making my own grip/knob with black tape and then going over it with stretch wrap. Like this:http://www.icewarehouse.com/descpage.html?pcode=RSRT

I found the grip to actually be better with this stuff.

Thanks for the feedback. Just saw my skate guy has a bunch on his wall, and I wanted to try one. But just getting a feel from this thread as to what folks think. I like the idea of the wrapped version with the butt end cut off half way, so it is maybe 3/8" wide. Will give it a whirl, thanks again.

Not to revive an old tread or anything...but,

Is the hairspray method still pretty much the go to method? Just so I get this right its spraying the stick with hairspray and putting the grip on without using any of the tape they give you?

I just put 2 Tacki-Mac Patrick Kane grips on brand new sticks using the hairspray method, I really like how thin they feel compared to the ribbed, wrapped versions (no tape, hairspray here too) that I had on my old sticks. I have not tried the tape they send with them.

I just use the tape and follow the instructions. Never had an issue. I see no reason to use hairspray.

Agreed. Tape and water does the trick.

Tape as base, then hair spray inside the Tacki Mac to facilitate it sliding over the end of the stick. My first time I did this, I did not know the hair spray trick, and wrestled with the stick/ Tack Mac for 35 minutes before I finally got it on. I am done in 1 minute with hair spray.

By the way, has anyone else had this little problem after putting the grip on, that the grip keeps sliding down the shaft and exposing a little bit of the shaft at the end of the stick? This has happened to me couple times. I put the grip on using the tape that comes with the grips, I go somewhere for few hours and when I come back, the grip has slid down. Obviously it is too late then to try and yank it back up. It's not a big issue, just annoying.

Turn the stick upside down till it dries.

I guess I'll try this the next time. It's just hard to believe that it could actually keep moving after putting it on.

And yeah, I use SR sticks.

Hairspray is 10x easier than the tape/water method, and makes it easier to remove grips to use it on a 2nd stick. Also, if you give your sticks away like I do, that person doesn't have to peel the tape residue off.

I think you have overstretched the grip while sliding it on resulting in the inching down as the rubber in the grip relaxes back to its unstretched state? I always slide it on then make sure all the stretch is out of the grip by putting my hand over the top of the grip and sliding the bottom upward jamming it against my palm. I never have the slipping problem. I use those grips for myself and my 2 boys. I have installed toooo many, just asked my bank account

Damn, this is actually a good point! I have never paid any attention to this. Thanks for the tip. Next time I will make sure that I don't over stretch it.

For a while they were including a small packet of what they called HF-100 Grip Tape Activator. I still have a couple of these left being that I never had to use an entire packet. It worked great, not sure why they stopped adding it.

I did the tape and sprayed a little WD-40 in the grip. Slid it on and squeezed it dry.

without the WD-40, it was a pain in the ASS to get on...

with the WD-40 is slipped on like butter.

I used a tiny bit of dish soap along the top rim of the stick butt end.

You really can just use the tape and water, it sticks just fine. I have a number of sticks with tacki-macs on them.

I've tried several methods of cutting my grips with varying results. Personally, I've found just some decent scissors to give me the best result, but it's never exactly what I'm hoping for. What are others using to trim their Tacki-Macs? What works best for you?

Before I switched to stretch tape for my grips, I was using Kane grips and then rolling down the top an inch and putting a 1/2" stick tape knob and then rolling the grip back overtop. Worked really well.

Much prefer the stretch tape now though, since I can make my own grips exactly how I want them
