Agreed on both accounts. So far no significant damage here but I know a number of people that have been severely impacted by this storm.

So far not the way I was hoping the day would start. Got back from the hospital from getting labs drawn and have a 100.0 fever. If my labs are elevated again I win an admission to the hospital, a CT scan and the grand finale... a liver biopsy. Hoping it's a bug and not rejection. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Sad story. The union can say all it wants about mismanagement, but the ill-advised strike that pushed them over the edge was singularly unhelpful to the striking workers.

I blame the company and not the workers. When you don't change your business practises or evolve with a changing market, you deserve to lose. Double that when you can't flourish in a nation as fat as this one.

Having the First lady rail against your product dosen't help either. Unions have outlived their purpose, and at this point seem to only exist to be a protection for shitty workers and a fundraiser for the DNC.

In some cases, I agree. In others, not so much. Working for an airline for the last few years has exposed me to a situation where unions still do serve a purpose. There are a still large number of safety related issues that would not have been addressed were it not for pressure from the unions.

I've heard of unions that do well for their members (a lot of electricians, carpenters up here have a great union) but some are just silly. When my brother was working summers at a grocery store's dvd rental desk he had to pay something like $40 a month despite working maybe 15 hrs a week. I don't think the union ever did anything for them, either.

I agree. I mean, I can't remember the last time I had a Hostess product. That and every supermarket (and even convenience stores) have fresh baked items now, there's no need to buy a processed snack.

On that note, I'm happy they're gone. They made some horrible, HORRIBLE "food". I'm no health nut, but even I wouldn't eat that crap.

I still hate unions, though. Safety and stuff, sure. But "we want a raise" striking drives me absolutely friggin bananas. Especially when the faculty does it only weeks before you're set to graduate... *cough* ontario colleges *cough*

Tastykake was having financial problems last year, but they ended up selling to Flowers Foods and they kept the Tastykake factory in Philly. Here's to them going nationwide, because that keeps jobs in Philly and gets their name out there.

As for Hostess, I'm not sure I've eaten anything of theirs aside from Ding-Dongs (Save your jokes). People making this a big deal that aren't one of the workers being laid-off just look like morons. With the general fatness of our nation being at an all-time high, people still want their fatty foods. It's just embarassing.
