The 2009-2010 Suspension Thread

Recommended Posts

I was talking with my dad about this at dinner, and he said that what the NHL should get rid of the instigator rule, and modify the rules for fighting, because right now everybody and there mother is a tough guy, and nobody necessarily has to back it up, which is why the league is in a state that its in, he said "If Cooke would have hit Savard the way he did, and no penalty was called, then boston should have done the same thing that buffalo did to ottawa when they started a line brawl when ottawas top players were on the ice." Everybody is scared to step up and fight, and before that was how players would have to earn respect. you throw a dirty hit, fine, at least back it up, instead of getting off the ice and letting the 4th line guy fight for you.

I disagree on the sending a message by means of non-cup contenders etc. Wouldn't it make a bigger splash to suspend someone on a team with a chance at the cup, proving that no one is above the new rule?

Colin Campbell doesn't send messages that people understand, why start now. I am extremely disappointed that Devo only called a minor on the play. I'll have to ask him about that next time I see him.

Yah, it's either 268,000 or 286,000. Crazy to think that's roughly only 24 hours of work that he isn't doing (8 games at 3 hours)

And crazier still, Ovechkins 2 games costed him $232,000. He averages 21.5 minutes per game, so that is $232,000 for 43 minutes, or roughly $5395 per minute.

Didn't like there was too much intent on the incident, more like Green just had his feet slide out and Tucker went in with him.

Coming from a Kings fan I agree. Tucker didnt really have a chance to hold up from contact on the play after Greene lost an edge.

Looks like Tucker got a stick on his right foot and caused his feet to slide out.

Tucker did get his feet, but if you watch his eyes, they are on the puck the whole time, I don't think he had intent to take his feet out, the play just needs to be taken out of the game, but the olympics sucked with no touch icing (oh no, I sound like Cherry, f*ck)

I hardly noticed the no touch icing in the Olympics. I see no reason why the NHL shouldnt adopt this rule. The risk of injury is too severe for the minimal offensive potential that can come if the man beats the icing call.

He should have gone for his head then he wouldn't have had to worry about getting suspended..... ;)

I guess the head shot penalty rule not being applied til next year means players can take more advantage of it.

Anton Volchenkov with a nasty elbow to the head of Carcillo, NO CALL.

There wasn't a good angle on the contact, but Carcillo has been diving on every shift in this game. That probably has something to do with it.

I thought the side view was a perfect view for the hit. Clearly an elbow to the head area, IMO. I'm a Flyers fan, but not a Carcillo fan.

Just saw the replays on the Philly intermission report and I'm not convinced. I will gladly change my position if there is a better angle out there.

That hit on Gagne should have been a penalty and a suspension.

WOW. He went apeshit after that, and rightfully so. I'm waiting for this game to turn into a rematch of that brouhaha from a few years back. Unbelievable!!!!

It was a complete non-factor. The "exciting race for a potentially iced puck" is THE most overstated thing in hockey. I didn't even notice it until halfway through, and then I didn't miss it.

Ya know what else I didn't miss during the Olympics. Guys getting jumped after clean hits, and ridicuolous scrums after every whistle. Ovechkin RAN OVER Jagr (clean)...and didn't have a single player jump him (as would have happened in the NHL).

Now, I'm not saying get rid of fighting...I like a good scrap as much as the next...but there has to be a REASON for it.

The league has made it very clear that they can put the headshot rule through without Competition Committee or general NHLPA assent.

If I were in the union, however, I'd be pushing for a no-touch icing rider. That shit has got to stop.

If you want to sell it to Bettman, just explain that it will increase scoring by keeping the offensive team fresh and giving the defensive team less time to recover on icings, and that it'll save enough time for an extra 30-second ad spot by the end of most games.

Couldn't agree more with both points. Clean hard hits are now expected to be followed by a fight, and no touch icing was no problem in the olympics and can save a lot of careers in the NHL.

The only way that can work is if the NHL steps up and handles suspensions for cheap shots more harshly. You have to have some way to address the cheap shots, be it fighting or suspensions. Most guys rarely see the shots that knock their players down and the assumption is generally that it was a cheap shot.

Carcillo suspended 2 games for his high stick on Clarkson last night. After watching it I find it laughable that Paul Holmgren called it accidental. Why was he cross checking him in the shoulder in the first place?
