Jason 65 Report post Posted September 10, 2012 I usually cut my sticks at the store where I buy them. In all seriousness though, my stick is at my upper lip without skates on. I used to have it shorter, but decided to gradually go a bit longer to see if it would help my shot. I would say it did and because it was gradual, I didn't see any detriment to my stickhandling. wrangler 157 Report post Posted September 10, 2012 When I first started playing, I would cut my stick down to about my collar bone on skates. I just found shooting very difficult.I recently started playing D, and tend to cut my stick more around where my sould patch would grow ( just below my bottom lip).Of course it's all personal preference, but where is that sweet spot you we're able to find when it comes to your stick length. Where do you cut it?Thought it would be a good topic of discussion.Cheers! There's a lot of discussion and information on this, you might start with a search or this topic:http://www.modsquadhockey.com/forums/index.php?/topic/50332-hockey-stick-length/page__hl__%20stick%20%20length
Davetronz 109 Report post Posted September 10, 2012 I don't think I've cut a twig since Bantam. Senior sticks come to somewhere between my chin and mouth with skates on.

YFZ138R 0 Report post Posted September 10, 2012 Im 6'1", and I cut my sticks all down to an inch below my chin barefoot.I have comedically long arms, and have tried going a bit longer, but it just feels goofy. I occasional get chirped about it, but when the orangutan arms are show, the chirps stop. Then the jokes of dragging knuckles happen.

fatwabbit 93 Report post Posted September 10, 2012 I used to have it as the 'recommended length'... upper lip, or chin when on skates. I've since cut it down significantly and have had good success. Now I have it just a smiggen above my collarbone.

fatwabbit 93 Report post Posted September 12, 2012 Mainly forward, but fill in as d man when we are short on numbers. We only know numbers while suiting up to play, so no change of sticks

crazyhick 19 Report post Posted September 13, 2012 I used to play with a stick that came up to my nose on skates up until this past year. now it's just below my chin. As a d-man, my shots have suffered, but my stickhandling has greatly improved. I had to adjust alittle for pokechecking and such but I do feel like I have to skate more to get to those loose pucks. Now I just have to stop buying 100+ flex sticks so I cant get my shot back to where it was

I love it. Stickhandling comes so much easier and i feel i have way better puck control.

Haven't had to cut a stick in forever until I recently picked up a couple SW RM19s. The length of these out of the box were ridic. I'm 6'3 and these things came pretty much up to my eyes on skates prior to cutting .

splitbtw 2 Report post Posted September 13, 2012 I am better at forward and can play it at a higher level but have been playing D for a bit now as my team has been short here and there. I am 6'2" and play with a stick that is a Bauer standard length (collarbone in skates). Up until about 2 months ago, I played with a stick about and inch longer. Before that, I played with sticks cut to about my chin. The shorter stick has done wonders for stick-handling and I haven't noticed losing much in stick checks or my shot. Playing with a P88 at ~96 flex. I just feel much more 'in control.'
bisons06 1 Report post Posted September 14, 2012 What flex are you using?Ive been using a 75 cut down about 3 inches so i still have quite a bit of whip.
masshky 1 Report post Posted October 16, 2012 Bump..Recently caught a few minutes of the '89 NHL All-Star Game on the NHL Network..Anyone else? Is it me or did most of these guys use short sticks, and by short, I mean well below the chin on skates, at collarbone level or even lower? When, and more importantly why, do you think, with time, there's been a transition from shorter sticks to today's more common length among NHL'ers, to at least the bottom of the chin on skates (from my observations, at least)?! One is because of the focus on team D and positioning. Getting sticks in lanes, etc. Another might be because of the speed, size, and skill of the players. Every little bit of extra reach helps get around or by someone. Especially for forwards going up against NHL sized D guys that are over 6'0 and have condor wings for arms. Watch a guy like Datsyuk who looks like he has a somewhat longer stick. His use of his body to shield the puck plus the extra few inches is amazing to watch. jazz4all 9 Report post Posted October 17, 2012 at first, my stick was about at lower lip level. my shot was really hard but, stick handling suffered. So i cut it at chin level, and now kinda at collar bone level. my shot velocity suffer a bit (due to higher flex) but puck control is much better. for playing D, i find it great. poke checking can be adjusted, and really forced me to skate more. If you've only got your top hand on the stick it's easier to swing a composite through a passing lane than a woodie of the same length.
hockeyguy1 1 Report post Posted December 12, 2012 I can't decide if i need to cut my stick or not. Right now im using a bauer supreme one 30, 87 flex. im 5'10 and without skates the butt of the stick just comes above my eye brows. I play mostly forward. Ive just recently gotten back into hockey after an 11yr break. Can't remember what i did to my sticks back then. (im 25 now) Anyone with similar height cut their sticks or just leave it be? Any advice would help.

Any advice would help. i'm same hight and same flex. I cut mine so they come to my chin or so while on skates. I am also a forward.if you think it should be shorter do two things. First is less destructive. Make your knob down the the shaft and use it at a drop in or stick and puck to see if you like that length then cut and tape if you don't move it up or down depending. The other thing which would take longer is start chopping it down 1/2 inch or so tape use. If its too long then cut again. If you go too far you can always put a plug in.
