Chinese Food before hockey game...

Recommended Posts

I've recently discover this chinese food spot near my job and the fried rice is absolutely DELICIOUS. TOnight I have 2 games back to back in my 2 leagues. I figure hey why not. it's carbs right???

I'm having pork fried rice with steamed dumplings. I usually stick to pasta on game day but we'll see what happens.

Anyone do the chinese food thing often? And no, I'm not fat.

Sounds like a disaster waiting to happen hahaha. All that chinese food will probably put you to sleep.

I've had chinese once before a game, i only played probably 10 minutes. Rest of the time I was either taking a poo or throwing up.

If you can handle it, awesome cuz chinese is the best, but if you can't handle it, you might as well not show up if you ate it.

Avoid foods heavy in salt and fat on game days. Eating fatty meals will actually impact your circulation and blood/oxygen to muscles is kind of a priority for hockey. Salt will cause your cells to hold more water.

I'm with chippa on this one, all the salt, MSG, and fats would slow you down and dehydrate you...but some people eat cheeseburgers and beer and rip it up, so who knows.

I would only suggest eating chinese if you cook it at home yourself.

My wife and I are asian, and we've found ways to NOT use MSG or lots of salt in our cooking. I eat takeaway once in a while and cant stand the super thirsty feeling after.

Oh god, I had PF Changs an hour or so before a game one time. Worst pre-game meal ever. I almost missed warm-ups because I was stuck in the bathroom for so long. Stick to chicken fettucine or something instead.

...no one I know uses MSG in home cooking

PF Chang's is bad no matter when you have it. I do remember a friend eating some sort of cajun chicken meal at Cheesecake Factory before a game and that ending horribly. I avoid eating out anywhere before a game due to fear of blowing mud as well as it just going against my habits.

Three teammates and I went to a Chinese take out place before a game tonight. Three of us played well, could hardly notice we were all dying inside. The fourth sucked big time. Played well tonight, had a goal, and ruined one kids night big time on the blue line. Almost good enough to make a habit of it...

Oh yeah, it still felt AWFUL though.

I wouldn't recommend it. Chinese food has way too much oil. The food will just sit in your stomach. If you are going to do it though I would suggest 4 hours before game time.

I'm eating some right now and I have a game at 7:15, I'll let you know how it goes.

But at least this is leftovers from last night (and it sat just fine in my stomach when I ate it then), and I'm not having a full meal since I'm not all that hungry.

Seems to have gone okay, there was one moment on the bench when I didn't feel so hot, but that was just after a really long shift so I was a bit winded. And I was one of only 3 D tonight. But I think if I had eaten a big meal of it it would have been bad.

Didn't work for me, I once had orange chicken before a practice, and while I did have energy, towards the end I was starting to burp it up and began to realize that it wasn't a good idea. If you do Chinese, I'd recommend that you stay clear of everything except for white rice or possibly fried rice.

Most of the Chinese i would stay away from on game day. however, i've got a great buffet around here that has a great sushi counter. I've gone there numerous times for lunch on game day, but i pretty much stick to the sushi. carbs and great protein. no issues there. but from the buffet section, i'll pretty much only do the vegetables. Sushi is WONDERFUL.

You could not pick a worse meal if you tried. The fat, grease and salt - let alone the fact that the food is fried, which in itself, is a disaster - will only impede your play and make it harder for your body to break down the food into the necessary nutrients.

Now, if you were going to go with steamed chicken and broccoli, with white rice and steamed vegetables, you'd have chosen an excellent before-the-game meal.

anytime before i'm on the ice or any work out period, i keep it light. Usually i'll eat a meal 3-4 hours before and a snack (fruit, cliff bar, whatev) within an hour before i play.
